Briggs - Liakhovich fight stopped after 3 minutes of round 12
Boxing rules state that each round is 3 minutes long. When Shannon Briggs scored his first knock down in round 12 the clock had 28 seconds it counted down to 26 seconds then stopped for over 10 seconds while the ref gave Serguei Lyakhovich a standing 8 count. Briggs then knocked Serguei Lyakhovich through the ropes and the fight was stopped at 3 minutes and seven seconds of the round not the official 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Serguei Lyakhovich should still hold the wbo heavyweight title as the KO happened after the bout was officially over

Here's a suggestion: if you get ktfo on worldwide tv quit bringing attention to it so everyone can see you get your ass beat in slow motion replay from about 5 different angles.

I think conspiracy theorys can be sucessful, if you just keep repeating enough. After all, there are still a bunch of jackasses that will tell you that Mike Tyson Knocked Buster Douglas out in round 8 or their fight.

Because he Did... Hee Haw, Hee Haw ;D In the instance of Briggs the Ref waved off the fight with a few seconds left but the clock kept ticking.... That happens in sports all the time, when the timekeeper cant keep up with the ref.. Take football for instance, how many times has another team called timeout ref blows the whistle and another few seconds ticks by and the ref tells the timekeeper to reset the clock....
Re: Briggs - Liakhovich fight stopped after 3 minutes of round 12
I believe it goes under the rule of where the fighter cannot be saved by the bell. Since he went down before the final bell the round continues till the ref either counts to 10 and/or deems the fighter able or not able to continue.
Re: Briggs - Liakhovich fight stopped after 3 minutes of round 12
You new here...We discussed this to death already...well i did, look back at my posts.
Basically the fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round including the 12th and final round..sound familiar?
If a guy gets knocked down with one second left in the round the ref starts counting....just as if it was the middle of the round. no difference. If the guy doesn't get up fight over.
If he gets up before 10 the ref determines (after the fighter stands and presents) IF the fighter is able to continue JUST AS IF it was the middle of the round!! If he's all staggery and glassy eyed it doesn't matter that the fight is actually over. the ref will THEN indicate a TKO
Sergei's case was a bit differant in that Sergei got knocked out of the ring. If a fighter gets knocked (or say falls) out of the ring he has 20 seconds to get back in. If he doesn't .Fight over, the time doesn't matter . during the 20 second count, the ref can determine at any time, that the fighter, in his opinion is unable to continue and stop the fight on a TKO. This was the official determination at the time and afterwards and is not protestable.
Same as when a fighter is hurt and the ref stops the fight and says the fighter can't continue. Its a judgement call by the ref in charge at that exact second in time and is non-protestable. The only possible issue Sergei's people MIGHT have been able to make is that Sergei was interfered with outside of the ring as the guys at the table at ringside held onto his shoulders to keep him from trying to get into the ring. However this did not (apparently) influence the refs determination that Sergei was unable to continue.

The rules are differenmt from place to place. In the unified rules there is no three knockdown rule nor saved by the bell. Other places may have either of these.
Re: Briggs - Liakhovich fight stopped after 3 minutes of round 12
I always thought Frank Bruno was the worst fighter to hold a heavyweight alphabet title ........... but big Frank would have battered that sorry excuse for a fighter Liakovitch (scuse spelling)
He was a disgrace. Briggs runs out of steam after 5 rounds and is so ponderous he makes George Foreman look like Willie Pep.
Liakovitvh should have been arrested for impersonating a fighter and have his purse witheld.
Disgraceful.
