Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Can anyone name any fighters who actually were reduced to the humiliation of avoiding competition by not moving up in weight, but actually having to meet the embarrassment of moving down in weight? There's only two instances I can recall. Most recently of course was Ricky Hatton running for the hills back down to the little superlightweight division after escaping with a lucky decision against journeyman Collazo, and of course the other instance was Roy Jones, who after looking around the heavyweight landscape after the Ruiz fight and realizing he would most likely be pounded like New York pizza dough by anyone else in that division, took off back down to 175 faster than speeding bullet. Is there anyone I'm forgetting?
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
how about tony margarito who lost to daniel santos at 154 and ran back down to welter.
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
DLH after taking a dive against Hopkins was back down at 154 in his next fight.
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Can you really count fighters who moved up past their natural weight for a particular match up before moving to their normal size as is the case with DLH (and possibly Hatton)?
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Well Chris Byrd has said he's going back to cruiser after the Klitschko defeat. But you could hardly callhis heavyweight exploits embarrasing
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Ricky Hatton. Went to 147 to follow the big boys up, but since he couldn't blow out a game Collazo, he ran back to light welter where things are obviously easier. I really don't like that Hatton couldn't stay at 147. I mean even if the fight was tough, he still won. Not every fight is gonna be an easy predictable knockout for Ricky at welter and I guess that he only wanted fights that were easy predictable knockouts. I would have loved to see Hatton - Mosley or Hatton - Judah or Hatton - Cotto, but instead boxing fans are stuck with Hatton-Urango for a belt that Hatton has already owned before.
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
I disagree with the Roy Jones Jr. comment... He would have beaten Holyfield, Toney, Byrd

I dont think thats fair at all, Urango means he will have fought 3 belt holders in a row, i dont think thats too bad compared to those boxers who sit on their ass and fight mandatories and even crapper opposition (Calzaghe do something ffs). You mention Cotto but apart from Quintanta he hasnt really fought that great a level of opposition at all. Also if Ricky and castillo get through their respective bouts weve got the mouth watering prospect of Hatton-Castillo. Also Hatton is a small guy (5'6) and the only fighter of that size who did any good at welter and above is Duran, and even then he couldnt compete with the best welter's and middles cause he was just too damn small and the huge reach disadvantage.

As it was the only option available at the time, it was never meant to be permanent.
Glad we got that cleared up.
Jones Jr was only ever going to be a hit and run job, he hardly got chased out of the division

collazo wasnt a jouryman either he performed very well and as for ricky moving down im glad he did i cant wait to see castillo vs hatton well you cant expect roy jones to stay at heavy wasnt he natrual middleweight or super middleweight ?? he wanted to win a belt at hw just to add to his legacy then move back down but it turned out that was the worst move :(
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Jones and Hatton? Jones was a natural Middle weight/Super Middle... and was only ever at Heavy Weight for the one fight... he said he wasn't going to campaign there. Hatton will fight at 147 again if a big enough fight comes up... he is fighting at 140 at the moment.

You've never been hit with a good shot in the body before.
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Yeah,I have to take back any ideas about Oscar taking a dive in the B Hop fight..I have seen 3 other fights where liver shots really really do damage, I thought Oscar was being a bit theatrical but I take it back.
and I agree with Hatton and Jones,Jones didn't intend on campaigning at HW and Ricky took a fight that came along...he's at 140 for the time being and that is justified by the fact that he will be fighting Jose Luis Castillo soon...and I'm sure,in the future.once he cleans out 140,he'll go back to 147 for the big fights....

I guess I'm agreeing with you,good post.CC.
Re: Fighters Who Have Been Chased to LOWER Divisions
Already gave you one in the cc fest thread ;)
THe thing about body shots... it's not a sudden thing like a head shot. It feels like electricity spreading from teh area you got hit right down to the tips of your toes... you get hit with one and think "fuck that was hard... doesn't seem to have hurt me too mu... uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurgh" ;D
Not been knocked down before... but taken some pretty hard body shots. Looked legit, why would Oscar through it for?
What could he gain by throwing the fight that he couldn't by getting another title in another weight class by beating THE MAN at Middle Weight.
