Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
After his win against John Ruiz and before his 2 devestating losses to Tarver and Johnson some people were calling Jones the best fighter since Surgar Ray Robinson,1 boxing mag even questioned if he might be better than SRR.
But then he gets sparked out in 2 fights and looks lackluster in loosing a 3rd.Ruiz loses a few more times as well just to take the shine off Jones win.
His past opponents are questioned, did he take easy fights and duck top fighters in the past?
Where is Jones place in boxing history?
Is he great or just very good?

Jones is an All Time Great. There's no debate about it. Only stupidity would say otherwise.

He is definitly a great... Of course "All time" is one of those things that gets thrown around alot... But I think we can use it here and not feel leary. He was terrific. A guy in (towards the end) larger weight classes that has the speed and ability to keep his hands down and out menuver good, strong fighters... Name a few that had ability like that, even in smaller, faster div.s... You'd be hard pressed... "All time Great"

I think he was foolish to drop back down from HW.
How highly would you rate him?
Top 10 fighters,top 20,ect.......

See people need to remember guys like Jack Johnson and others when they say "All time"... People have a tendancy to only mention the last 40 yrs.
I say between 10 and 15 somewhere
Re: Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
Cant believe that in the last 100 years or so of boxing Jones is better than all but 10 or 15 other fighters??????????????
Re: Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
I think his skill in the ring is almost unmatched in his prime
Re: Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
'All time great' skills all around were great, he fought who needed to fight.
Also you don't come across many fighters who win as many belts as he did and they werent given to him he beat somebody for them...
Now where hes ranked All time, not fully sure but 20-30 sounds about right...

Roy Jones at 168. 168. Not 175. Was unbeatable. I don't care what name gets brought out from the past. It doesn't matter. They would still lose. At 168, Jones was the definition of a perfect fighter

I got all his fights on DVD so I hve seen him at his best.
The way he fell apart against Johnson and Tarver leads me to think that he avoided hard punching fighters in his prime.

Paz had moved up 2 or 3 weight devisions and survived a broken neak before he fought Jones.
Pluse he was never known as a hard hitter.More a box/fighter.
Re: Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
i just dont see jones as a "all time great" the best of his era? probably. i would have to him in there with the vonzell johnsons and saad muhammeds or the yanqui lopezs or dwight braxtons or the tommy hearns or the haglers or monzons or someone "great like those guys to take him seriouse as a all time great. imo all those guys would probably beat him. so you can all argue all you want and tell me the outcomes of these fights in your opinion but i wont believe it, but if you insist all im gonna say FOR SURE is holyfield at ly heavyweight sparks jones everytime!
Re: Is Roy Jones an all time great or just 1 of the best of his era???
He'll be remembered forever no matter what but his mistake was to carry on after winning the title at heavyweight. If he'd reitred after that then no one would even be asking these questions, if he knew when to quit then everyone would have him down as an all time great for sure but carrying on after and picking up some bad losses are tainting his image.
