If there were only the original weight classes...
Just started thinking about, if there were just the original divisions, none of the jr. divisions (jr. Middleweight, light welter, ect.), what the weight classes would look like. They would be absolutely stacked. The potential matchups would be incredible, just look at the first division, flyweight, I mean a possible fight between Ivan Calderon and Vic Darchinyan.
Also thought about who would be champ in the divisions. Interested to see what people think. And I'm sure I've forgotten some people. And some of these guys are in between divisions, they probably wouldn't be where I've put them but I have to put them somewhere
Flyweight (112 pounds)
Ivan Calderon Koki Kameda Vic Darchinyan Rodel Mayol
Eagle Kyowa Brian Viloria Jorge Arce Omar Narvaez
Hugo Cazares Giovanni Segura Lorenzo Parra
Ulises Solis Pongsalek Wonjogknam Roberto Vazquez
Arce might be at 115 now but assume he would have stayed at 112 instead of going all the way up to 118.
Champ: Lorenzo Parra, the best fighter IMO although fights with Arce and Darchinyan would be great.
Bantamweight (118 pounds)
Rafael Marquez Cristian Mijares Masamori Takuyama Hozumi Hasagawa
Martin Castillo Luis Perez Jose Navarro Fernando Montiel
Jhonny Gonzalez Dmitri Kirilov Silence Mabuza Wladimir Sidorenko
Nobuo Nashiro Jose Navarro Ricardo Cordoba Alexander Munoz
Maybe Martin Castillo or Navarro would have fought at 112 but put them here. Gonzalez might have gone up to 126.
Champ: Same guy that's the champ now, Rafael Marquez
Featherweight
Manny Pacquiao Humberto Soto Chris John Nicky Cook
JMM Israel Vazquez Oscar Larios Robert Guerrero
MAB Daniel Ponce de Leon In Jin Chi Rocky Juarez
Joan Guzman Celestino Caballero Scott Harrison Orlando Solido
Pac, JMM, and MAB could all make 126 IMO so I assume they would have stayed at this division instead of going up to 135. Since Vazquez, Ponce and Caballero are all big 122 pounders put them here.
Champ: Manny Pac
Lightweight
Joel Casamayor David Diaz Alex Arthur Edner Cherry Amir Khan
Juan Diaz Jose Santa Cruz Nate Campbell Paulie Malignaggi
Julio Diaz Zahir Raheem Isaac Hlatshwayo Andreas Kotelnik
Acelino Freitas Edwin Valero Jorge Barrios Anthony and Lamont Peterson
Valero's a big, natural 130 pounder so figured he'd go here instead of 126. Just figure that Malignaggi and Kotelnik could make this weight, and would not have done well at 147.
Champ: Joel Casamyor, although I've got a feeling he won't last that long.
Welterweight
This weight class would just be ridiculous...
PBF Judah Diego Corrales Carlos Quintana Naoufel Ben Rabah
Margarito Clottey Junior Witter Carlos Baldomir Paul Williams
Cotto Vivian Harris Demetrius Hopkins Kendall Holt Kermit Cintron
Hatton Jose Luis Castillo Andre Berto Joel Julio Luis Collazo
Mosley
ODLH
Cory Spinks
Ishe Smith
Jose Rivera
Hatton, Vivian Harris, Castillo, Corrales, Witter, and Hopkins probably would have all had problems making 135, so put them here. DLH, Spinks, Mosley, Smith, and Rivera probably wouldn't have wanted to fight at 160.
Champ: PBF, although well see what happens in the ODLH fight
Middleweight
Winky Wright Roman Karmazin Sergio Mora Daniel Santos John Duddy
Jermaine Taylor Joachim Alcine Kassim Ouma Sam Soliman Giovanni Lorenzo
Edison Miranda Allan Green Ike Quartey Anthony Mundine
Arthur Abraham Peter Manfredo Sergey Dzindriuk Kelly Pavlik
The 154 guys are all natural 154 pounders that probably would have had problems making 147, maybe with the exception of Ouma. Green and Mundine have both said they could fight at 160. Doubt Manfredo would have gone all the way up to 175.
Champ: Winky Wright, I thought he beat Taylor so I guess I'll go with him.
Light Heavyweight
Joe Calzaghe Tomasz Adamek Denis Inkin Antonio Tarver Clinton Woods
Mikkel Kessler Paul Briggs Lucian Bute Vitali Tsypko Glen Johnson
Bernard Hopkins Chad Dawson Carl Froch Robert Stiglitz Jean Pascal
Librado Andrade Roy Jones Jeff Lacy Zsolt Erdei Danny Green
Adrian Diaconu Wayne Braithwaite
All the big 168 pounders are here. Wayne Braithwaite's a stretch but he's a small cruiser and apparently he's thought about going to 175.
Champ: Joe Calzaghe
Heavyweight
Not gonna list them all but obviously all the heavyweights plus the cruisers like O'Neil Bell, Haye, Mormeck, all those guys that really couldn't make 175.
Champ: Wlad
Like I said I'm sure I've forgotten some people, and the way I put some of these guys in certain divisions is easy to disagree with.
Anybody disagree about who the champions would be? If so, go right ahead.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
What a F****** colossal waste of time that was ;D
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...

CC. Have had a boatload of free time since I've been home for the holidays.
Same day weighins would kinda tie in to a weight class discussion. A guy like Cotto might never have fought at 140 if he had to weigh in the day of the fight.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
Ouma I very much doubt if 80% of them could

:coolclick: Oumafan for all that effort
I will have aproper look later and make some comments ;)
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
CC. Lots of food for thought.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
CC bro, that is a phenomenal post. Pair those weight classes with ONE unified sanctioning body and that's a recipe for some REAL fights being made on a regular basis. The Welterweight class would definately get cleaned up and make for some real interesting fights.

Your post really shows how deep welter and feather are right now and how much better it would be if there were fewer divisions and fewer belts. Even Middle and Lt Heavy would be so much better without SMW taking good fighters out of the the more high profile divisions.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
cc ouma ill av a think an get bk to ye.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
Great topic and nice work putting that together.CC. I was thinking about that not too long ago. There's only one thing. Hatton would have gotten one taste of WW and squeezed into lightweight.
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
Absultely wicked post Ouma,CC bro! I've always wanted to do something like that but have just never had the time to sit there and think it through...wow....I'll post my breakdown and thoughts in the morning,I'm tired! :P Awesome thread though man!
Re: If there were only the original weight classes...
I know the divisions would be just stacked.... but I think it would be inherently unfair to some boxers who are naturally an in-between wieght....esp. if they had to weigh in the same day. I think good things happen either way. CC's to everyone. Good chat.
