Sparring heavyweights....
hi guys,
i've done alot of sparrin with guys who weigh 83 kilos n down, if i've ever sparreed with n e one heavier then they must not have been solid.
but recently i sparred with a solid 16 stone heavyweight! this dude was solid, he was real chunky and very muscular, not fat. he was about 6'1 or 6'2. im5'6 and weigh 10 stones when not in shape but in shape im usually about 9n a half.
anyways, i sparred this guy, im way more skilled than him n that, i was out jabbing him to the head n body, but everytime he managed to land a jab on me, i was shocked at how heavy the heavyweight jab is. i was perfectly fine but the heaviness of the punch really surprised me. :o btw this dude was stepping in with his jab, maybe this made the jab even more harder...
i mean now i know what it would be like fighting a heavyweight, every fuckin punch is like a battering ram or worse!!! maybe its cos i weigh less than this guy or its jus how a heavyweight jab feels. i've got a good chin, chin which has been tested in sparring and fights, but this guys jab felt really hard. theres a saying ' a heavyweight jab is like a light heavyweights knockout punch' makes sense!
is this normal when fighting or sparring a heavyweight n did the weight difference have something to do with affect of the punch on me?
any of you guys had any experience sparring a heavyweight for the first time?
Re: Sparring heavyweights....
i guess none of u's have the ballz to spar HW, itsokay, nuttin rong with being a puff :P ;)
Re: Sparring heavyweights....
I'm sparring on a regular basis with a good heavyweight, technically sound. He's 90kg and I'm 75kg but we're about the same height, I'm 186 cm and he's 189 cm.Now he's going all out on me. But like the first week he was holding back. But I can remember that I was really shocked at the power of his punches. Defensively I'm quite a good fighter but even when I blocked his punches he seemed to move me.

Lol one...If that was supposed to entise someone to answer..Its worked for one..And two..Please try not too do the whole name calling thing bro ..lol ;)
And for topping that ..
Try sparring kelly oliver former Wbo intercontinental cruiserweight champion ;)
Yeh its rough with the big guys..But its far better to spar the big guys that are experianced in the ring rather then big ol boys that fight like they just came out of the red lion on a saturday night ..lol
You want a big guy that knows how to pull his punches and will make you work proper..
This lad might have a hard jab..But if your the more experianced lad then he's probably in there for him to learn off you.. So your there to make him work and not for you to be jabbed around..
For instance sparring kelly oliver he leans all over ya and puts his wiegh on you spins you into the corner when you have him on the ropes..Makes you work hard for everything you get..
So though this kid is bigger then you..Thats prob what they want you doing with this big guy ..but the other way around..Stay slick and move around side to side etc.. make him work for what shots he lands..I bet you felt his jab cos you stood there with him and traded somewhat.. If you move enough he'll gas out if he doesnt have the experiance..
But for the sake of what you posted yehh i know what you mean..
When you know your probably gona do up to five rounds with a big ol boy who's every little shot is heavy and you know you cant hurt them..(in my case) Kel can be hit with anything anyone in the gym can throw and keep fighting and just smile..Thats when you know your work is cut out for you..
Everybody should be put in that position from time to time so's that your fighting up to your competition and even somewhat fighting to survive the rounds..And thats where you'll gain no end of experiance ;)
Peaceee
Re: Sparring heavyweights....
Sparred a few heavys and super heavys.
Fairly good chin and power... so all that really gets me is how hard they are to move compared to an 81kg fighter... you've really got to get some weight in to your jab because they can just walk through it and close you down.
The shorter heavys have the advantage on the inside... with the extra stength they have they can lean on and tie you up... but tbh I think unless you are fighting an absolute beast the safest place to be is often on the inside... away from the taller guys reach which is where he is gonna generate the most power down the piep.
But your inside and their inside are going to be different... you can get right into their range and still have leverage to get shots off with weight on them... the taller guys can only really through arms when you are in your range inside.
