Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
Hahahahahaha.
I hate it when people go on about a really good punch that burst somebodys eye open like a tomato !!
When you have been watching boxing along time such things dont intrest you , i tune in and go to fights to watch 2 men in their prime bare their souls not to see some mismatch gorefest !!
I also cant stand showboating when a fighters losing it seems to amuse some people but i think anyone initiated in the noble art sees it for what it really is !!!
Typical example being Roy Jones acting up in the Tarver rematch, i was watching the fight with my girlfriend and her dad and they were really impressed i just wanted to shout at the both of them !!
My personal favourite fight was Vargas - Tito that fight had everything and never have i witnessed such bravery under pressure as that show by Fernando .
I for one like boxing but i also like to see a fighter ask some serious questions of himself !!
I cant stand Hopkins , Mayweather and Winky Wright !! They are seasoned fighters who always seem to be fighting smaller less gifted men and usually not putting their man away making excuses whilst getting paid millions!!
Hopkins display against Eastman sticks in the mind , Hopkins mouthed off about what he was going to do and then just held and counted punched the entire fight . Then against Taylor just did enough to '' POSSIBLY'' win for a man making his 20th defence his performence was a disgrace .
Mayweather though takes the cake though !! The man has a sewer for a mouth he should be beating a trail to Hattons door as Hopkins should be beating one to Calzaghes !! Instead he goes after Carlos Baldomir a limited come forward fighter taylor made for him and then gives another exhibition never ever trying to stop his man !!
Hatton and Calzaghe on the other hand stand tooth and Nail in hard fights with big man with pedigree and did it the champion way against Collazo and Bika !!
Joe damaged his hands but still stood in the trenches against a dangerous fighter.
I was a little dissapointed with Hatton last time out but thats the 1st and only time i ever will !!
I always have a sour taste in the mouth after watching Hopkins , Mayweather and Wright .

Just a few examples of comments.
The best being by someone who claimed to be a total boxing fan, "who's Sugar Ray Robinson? and did he ever fight Ali?"
Mike Tyson had 15 fights in less than a year, a 9 month span to be exact.
That alone was a great accomplishment for a fighter of his generation. He had another 13
fights the year that followed. He did it the real old fashion way. To say he was the greatest
of all time, is just your oponion. To me there is no greatest of all time. There are just
great fighters of a generation or era. Mike Tyson left a lot to be desired and I think his
fall came just as quick as his rise to fame. Too many circumstances which I am sure you are
very aware of.
Boxing fans today come in all ages and we have to take that into consideration.
The older boxing fans have the advantage but only if they stuck with it and to be honest it is
very hard to keep up. The younger the fan, the more he or she has to dig into the past and that
takes time, so they got their work cut out for them. In the old days (mainstream media free title
fights and all) people we exposed more to boxing than they are today.
I am too young to be a boxing historian and I fell off the face of the earth during the late 80's
and 90's. This does not mean I was oblivious to who Mike Tyson was. I don't think there is a person alive today who does not know who Mike Tyson is or was. But if you ask me about RJJr. ??? lol
But if you ask me about Duran, Leonard, Hearns, Hagler etc.. Those are my fondest memories of this sport ;D and damn good ones too.
If you are looking for a boxing purist, I don't think there is such a thing, for the mere fact that so
many changes have taken place in the past 30 years. A so called purist that allows his or her sport to be altered or changed in anyway, fashion or form, and still stick around and claim they are purist,
arent purist at all.
Good luck in finding that ideal boxing fan ;)
I guess one is a boxing fan if he or she says they are a boxing fan. Right Wacko ;)
lol
A lot of youngsters on here say they come to learn, maybe you can be that teacher they are searching for
Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
I certainly don't think Tyson was the greatest of all time, was just repeating a comment made by a boxing fan who's only knowledge was Tyson!
Certainly Tyson was a great fighter, but I think made even better by the lack of real competition at the time. This is not a reflection on him because you can only fight what is there. He was a devestating puncher hence the reason for that many fights in a year. I'm assuming they were very early on in his career and he was blowing away lots of part-time journey men in the first few minutes of the first round while not taking any ounishment himself.
This is the way of most good fighters early on.
I have no problem with people wanting to learn about the sport, we all did, just those who claim to be experts but don't know anything. I do distinguish between boxing fans and fight fans. The later just want to see a mis-matched blood bath and will be booing at a technically superior fight within the first 2 rounds. For me the performance put on by PBF against Baldomir was a boxing clinic, but there are plenty who would disagree with me and say "he ran", "was scared" etc.
I would never call myself an expert or think myself suitable "to teach" other's about boxing or its history. I myself am constantly learning from those here, but am just frustrated by not being able to have a half decent conversation about boxing. This forum is a god-send.
Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
Poser boxing fans always over rate Tyson. It gives them away everytime. They simply lack the knowledge to put Iron Mike's accomplishments into perspective.

Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
i think any of the fans who claim they really are true fans, no matter what knowledge they have are the annoying one. true fans don't talk about they are true fans, they act about it giving them no reason to have to say it.
i have no problems with lesser fans who has little knowledge of the sport, i can easily educate them. that shouldn't be any problem for someone who really knows what his talking about.
the annoying fans are those who talk a lot and insist there knowledge are always correct and claim they need no reason to listen to others.
as for all fans, always keep in mind no matter who your talking to, they are fans...meaning they can be bias towards who they are a fan of.
boxing is 50% oppinion 50% facts, atleast how a boxing conversation goes.
when someone says something like, evander holyfield is still cruiserweight champion. now that is a given. that should be a opportunity to educate a fellow fan.
i guess its our responsibility to make sure lesser fans dont get out of control with exagerating facts, or oppinion. facts we can easily educate them with, because for sure there are proofs out there to show them the facts...as for oppinion, well we can only limit that.

waffle waffle...u on about man
Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
Here's the thing...at least my outlook on it...no matter whom you are a fan of...everyone is going to disagree at least part of the time.
As far as who is the greatest of all time, who fought the best opposition, what was the greatest fight of all time, best knockout, blah blah blah, it's all just opinion...& no two opinions are ever alike.
Anyone that claims to know everything about a certain fighter or brandish their knowledge about the sport as if it were a blade to win an argument...well bully to them...but no fight fan knows all there is to know about the sport or much less their favorite fighter...again...it's all partial knowledge. Even the greatest historians will tell you that.
Partial knowledge ends up equating to opinions based on half of the information.
Honestly...if you're fed up of boxing fans...it sounds like you just can't carry on in a casual debate unless someone either agrees with you or follows your train of thought...no offense.

This garbage makes me laugh. Bad mouths Mayweather for facing Baldomir (undisputed Welterweight champion at the time). Than praises Calzaghe for facing Bika (obscure European who's own mother doesn't recognizes him). Typical British poster.

Maybe, but at the same time I think poser "knowledgable" boxing fans grossly under-rate Tyson just to seperate themselves from the newbies who overrate him.
But back to this thread, I know what you mean. I'm still fairly new to boxing and therefore don't consider myself extremely knowledgable, but even I have a hard time finding people to talk boxing with. You can always find people who will talk about how great Ali and Tyson were, but I find it hard to find anyone with a knowledge about anyone else besides the absolute biggest names.

Re: Fed up of "Boxing Fans"
Here's a "Boxing Fan" story you might find funny.
I was in the coffee shop get my morning coffee and I was wearing my Boxing Hall of Fame T-shirt. A guy in line noticed my shirt and started talking to me. At one point in the conversation he said, "I know a lot about boxing!" I told him I went to the induction weekend each year and had met a lot of famous boxers. He was asking me about stuff I had signed and I told him I had just gotten a photo signed by Carmen Basilio. The guy looks at me and says "I never heard of him." I said goodbye, got my coffee and left.
