Who's skills would prove too much for the other?
The Toney that fought Barkley and Thornton was terrific, he showed against Barkley his ability to play the matador and structure effortless beauty on the inside and against Thornton his ability to keep an opponent at a distance by keeping a jab in his face and out-classing him with footwork and finesse from the outside.
But Calzaghe can beat him IF he uses the right tactics - moving in and out of range and speed of foot and not getting carried away by bending at the knees in front of him and winging.
Toney at Supermiddleweight would murder Calzaghe
We all know calzaghe has skill... But when did he ever put it head to head with another fighter with just as much skill ...
Calzaghe was a great amatuer fighter..Won at least a couple of aba's..
Toney shone brighter in the professional ranks..
Calzaghe is more of a strait boxer..While toney is an awkward, slick, cunter puncher and ( at 168) Could bang too..
So we know that james was a killer at middle and super mid..He put his skills up and showed us what he could do against some of the baddest fighters possible..
But we never saw calzaghe take on that type of opponent to make the assumption..
But going on whats fair..Bieng that i'll say..Joe will be just over half as effective against a fighter like toney considering he looks great against nobodies but you give him the benefit of the doubt because we know he owns the skill...
I would say it came down to james late tko /ko..
Dont think joe ever had trouble hitting an opponent the way he would with a prime and in shape toney..and i dont believe that calzaghe could hurt toney.. Toney just has a typewriter head..Big ol thing.. Never know..Toney might have even finished off joe c before the fight begun..
If toneyb talked the same trash to joe that he did to both eubank and benn on a jonathon ross interview a fair while back..I dont think joe would have kept it half as well.. Probably resulting in a bika like performance against someone ten times the fighter that bika is...lol

james toney will pick him apart.
Calzaghe is way to fast for toney, and would pick him apart if he fought right. toney is a good fight and fought alot of good fighter, but calzagh's speed would be way to much for him and would pick him apart over 12 rounds for a ud.
Im a huge fan of both fighters, I will sit on the fence here and say it could go either way depending upon who has the correct gameplan on the night...

Toney is a tough son of a bitch and a skilful fighter but he was weight trained at 168 lb even in his prime.
He knocked out Michael Nunn in a terrific come from behind victory but he never really did much else at the lighter weights.
Tough fight but Calzaghe would outwork imo.
Joe C. in the ring has shown skill, he has been champ. but James Toney showed far superior skills not only then Joe C. but then a lot of many fighters over the past years.... He didn't stay for long at SMW thats because IMO he was always in the shadows of RJJ (so was B-Hop) so all three were always trying to be one step ahead of the other......
So IMO James Toney takes this one via TKO, I know Joes never been stopped but I just think that James skills bakc in those days are superior then Joe skills today....
It's not fair to compare anyone to Roy Jones Jr. at 168 nobody has come close to mirroring his speed, power, angles at the weight. Roy didn't throw as big of combinations as Calzaghe on average, but they were harder, faster, and more accurate. Also more adaptable.
Toney would beat Calzaghe.
but where roy jones picked his punches to Ko fighters, calzaghe smotherd them with nig combos forcing them to go down or the stoppage, both were very effective.Quote:
