I would love to seem him drop down to Cruiser and fight Bell. He would give some credibility to the division, and Bell would be a great match. I would much rather see him be skillful AND powerful as a cruiser than box and run from the big boys at HW. He really has no shot at beating Peter or the Klits. If he wants to be a champ again, he can drop down and be a REAL Ring and/or unified champ. The best he can do at HW is poach a paper title.
Chris Byrd handled Holyfield almost as well as Toney did. He employs a lot more movement than Toney and worked to negate one of his best assets by continuously punching Holyfield in the shoulder. Toney's problem with Peter was he tried to stand toe-to-toe too often and fought flat-footed as if that was going to make a difference to Peter. Byrd knows he doesn't have KO power and would focus more on speed and defense.
Guess it tells you something about the money to be made at HW as compared to cruiser though... Byrd clearly isn't going to make a big splash in the division any more, but even that, along with the fact that he basically can't fight in an entertaining fashion and still be successful, isn't enough for him to drop down where he would have alot more going for him.. Just not enough cash, I guess.
Byrd probably could beat Peter.
But... Byrd(in fighting attitude) reminds me of someone like Meldrick Taylor(not in style or excitement, but in attitude)
Because he'll say that he should box and move, and when he does that he's very good at it, but Byrd will get in there with people 50 pounds heavier knowing he doesnt have the punching power and stand nad go toe to toe with them to make it exciting.  I like that about Byrd but it's really not helpful to his career.
Byrd got guts and is a fighter, but I think boxing would be his best way, but I know he's gonna stand and trade so why even try to fool us fans into thinking you're gonna go back to boxing?  come on chris ;D
And it's amazing... in some of his stinky performances since winning that title(I can only think of two boring fights) it was his opponent stinking it out not him. Oquendo was being a "spoiler" like people give Calzaghe an excuse for looking bad in his last fight ;) And was making the fight ugly with his fouling and tackling and such while Chris was actually moving forward trying to press the fight and be exciting.
Golata fight = ACTION PACKED!!!!
McCline fight = ACTION PACKED!!!!
The Williamson fight, Byrd was moving forward all night and Williamson was backing away and running from him, why.. I do not know.
Even that Wladimer fight he lost was exciting, he wins the first round with body punches and moving AWAY from Wladimer's power hand and then in every other round after that he moves the opposite way.
Anyone have the round where Wladimer first dropped him and had him in trouble, that was an exciting round to me, way Wladimer almost had Byrd out of there and Byrd kept fighting whilst being out on his feet trying to do something, liked it for excitement! ;D
NO talk about Cruiser anymore! I think maybe he likes the look of the HW division.
Last time he got a title he was able to hold onto it for quite a while.
One win at HW with a belt is worth probably 10 at cruiser money wize!
Can't blame the guy.
He could give Briggs nightmares with his defence and speed
Well he cant leave it too late imo. a big named fighter would be good for him imo! if he loses that i think its game over. but i think with the way the devison is he should get a shot if he gets a good win!
i still think he can make waves in the HW division. his skill and movement would be a nightmare for most.
would love him to drop to cruiser if he could
I really thought Wvlad had finished this guy off .
Byrd is the heavyweight version of Winky Wright . He's got no power but his defence is his strength . He slaps away punches and his fists are rarely clenched in his gloves as he puts his face in his hands to avoid punches . He would be better if he had an authoritive jab but he paws away with it and his enttire gameplan is centered around making the guy miss and countering . A clever little fighter but at the highest level against Wvlad he was totally out of his depth .
I really like the guy as a person
But really dislike the guys boxing style.
He keeps guys off to win. If he tries to actually fight he will lose.
(kinda like PBF!)
Byrd will never beat Wladimir - period. He could probably outwork Briggs or Valuev and maybe even Maskaev but Wlad is Byrd's kryptonite.
There are some tough heavyweights in front of the little byrd, he will have a rough time moving up.
Chris Byrd has a shot vs a couple guys out there....only if he moves his head more, in his last fight Wlad moved his head for him......with his fists
LOL, he told Larry merchant that his strategy was to let Wlad shoot his wad then he would get him in the later rounds.Quote:
