Have my third fight in two weeks time..... against a southpaw....

Hi Lads

First time poster.

First of all, have sat up for a while reading a lot of posts and got a good bit of information.... wish i had foun this site a good few weeks ago!!

Anyway.. been looking around the site, and sorry if i have missed it somewhere... but I am looking to get good tips to fight a southpaw...

I know the basics (i think) - keep your foot on the outside, dont go rin to his big left, but was wondering if there is anything else out there any of you may have experienced during your bouts in the ring? or seceret weapons you have used against a southpaw?

Have won my first two fights at amatuer (3 2minute rounds) and should feel more confident than I do, but the fact this guy is a "lefty" is getting to me.... hence sitting up after midnight in the internet when i have work tomorrow!!

I have had a bit of sparring with a southpaw and have simply been trying to get used to it and tryu and get in to a rythm - have simply been learning as i go along...

If you lads have any good input for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have another Q for the trainers/ southpaws on this topic.

I fought a southpaw last year and found I was getting caught with a lot of hooks as counters to my straight punches.

I was sparring as a south paw last night to take some pressure of my left knee (which is still recovering from degradation of the patella tendon >:mad) and I was trying to counter straights with hooks but couldn't do it.

Unfortunately I never got the video of this fight so I can't refer to that for help.

How do southpaws counter straights with their annoying hooks?

I don't intend to fight as a southpaw but I figure if I understand how this works for them I'll be able to understand how to fight against it.

I was told to throw many right hands and the occaisional jab to the body to help set stuff up when fighting this particular southpaw but I think some better explanations on how to fight a southpaw might come from someone else :)

In therory it should be easery to land right hands against southpaws.

Try throwing more lead right hands than normal.

watch mayweather vs judah and mitchell..that'll show u how to do it

straight rite followed with a left hook, great combo to throw against a southpaw trust me

and with the hooks thing, u may find u got caught becus they throw rite hooks instead of left, so if u keep ur left hand low, or shoulder low so it doesnt protect ur chin, ur gona get caught all nite long

The straight right then hook......just to clarify... what is the exact body motion with this combo? am i throwing the straight right then twisting my body round to the left to come back round to the right and hook with the left hand? ... maybe its just because its a combo i have not really tried much but feels a bit awkward as i sit at my computer and try it out...

also - cheers for the point about keeping my hand/shoulder low... thats one of those obvious things that you would not think of till its too late.... i will remember this when i am hitting the bag in the next few days...

well up for this match as its more of a challenge for me... will see what i can do

only ever spared southpaws never thought one but cudnt see the big deal about it the best punche to throw though imo which worked well for me was straight right hand lay back wait for them to come into to range and the bang and move

when u throw the rite, make sure u get ur weight behind it, this means ull have to put ur left shoulder behind the rite, so ur turned to the left if u get me, this means u need to twist to the right to get back into ur stance so throw the hook as u naturally have to move that way anyway.

ask ur trainer to show u that'll probly be easier for u to see. its a great combo tho, i use it against orthodox fighters aswell and the left hook always clips them.

another thing is to remember to move to ur left side, that means ull be moving towards their weaker hand (their right) and sets ur big right hand up better aswell

Cheers for the advice...

The Mayweather fight was excellent. Certainly saw a lot in those twelve rounds to get some added confidence going in to Saturday... He makes it look so easy.... Straight right all the way with left hooks to follow.

Think i need to take it easy now.... just 5 days away. Been working hard over the week end and sparred tonight and could feel my arms getting heavy as the sparring went on.... No more for me i think... just some light bag work...
