Don’t try to understand. Mayweather is a genius of the ring. And aren’t all geniuses – from Picasso to Einstein – just a little bit quirky, just a tad conflicted, maybe a wee bit kooky?

Over the course of Mayweather’s 30- or 40-minute chat with the media, he probably contradicted himself seven or eight times, but that’s what made the round table interview interesting (in a morbidly fascinating way).

Mayweather is cocky and insecure at the same time. He’s both aloof and hyper-sensitive. He’s cold as ice, but he’s often overly emotional. As he told the writers about the many struggles in his life, about his rise from the ghetto to the top of the boxing world, and his desire to give his mother and family a better life, his moods changed as quickly as he can drop a one-two combination in the ring.

Combine one of Bernard Hopkins’ more self-righteous tirades with one of Mike Tyson’s more bi-polar rants and you have Floyd Mayweather’s idea of “keepin’ it real” with the press.

Hey, we’ll take it. It’s not like we have any choice. This sport is literally dying for a mega-event, and De La Hoya-Mayweather is as big (perhaps bigger than) the Golden Boy’s showdowns with Vargas, Hopkins and Felix Trinidad."

It’s when both De La Hoya and Mayweather analyze each others’ styles – not their records or personalities or perceived character defects – that it becomes obvious that they are serious about this fight, that it’s not just about money and business.

“I already know how to beat De La Hoya,” Mayweather said. “I don’t need my daddy’s advice. I will win this fight and I will win impressively.

“He makes a lot of mistakes. For starters, he don’t bend his knees. He’s too straight up.”

De La Hoya says he’s going to get a lot of leverage on his jab and hook from that “straight-up” position. And if Mayweather doesn’t like the heat and tries to flee the kitchen?

“If he runs I will cut off the ring,” said De La Hoya. “He likes to move to his left, he seldom moves to his right because there’s no power there. This is the first time I’ve really studied a fighter. I wish I would have done this for other fighters, but guys like Mayweather always take me to another level.

“I guess you can say I’ve become a student of the game because I really want to hurt him, I really do.”

Thanks for the heads-up mate, though there will be two more months of this banter, badmouthing and general disrespect between these two. I was quite amused by the pic they had in Boxing News last week of Floyd without his top, and Oscar having to pull his shirt and tie from his suit pants to show off his six pack...and Floyd looking at it contemptuously. It's all getting a bit silly, so my main hope is that this fight lives up to even 50% of the hype that's happened.

It is ALL HYPE to sell tickets.They dont hate each other...there is no bad blood.DLH said that he is gonna fight rough and dirty...since when has his attitude been this way?I remember when mayorga called him a F*G,called his wife names,talked about him lying on the canvas at the Hopkins fight like a b**ch, and then they made up.Its all hype.

I don't think it is bigger than de la hoya-trinidad. They were both in their prime, both who could end a fight with one punch, both in their best weight class, both undefeated, both latinos (puerto rico vs mexico). It was next to impossible to pick a clear favorite. it is being fashioned as the bigger fight in terms of the opulent style it is being promoted but underneath that it has less substance than de la hoya-trinidad
