I was happy to hear that they raised £130,000 for Gerald and it would go up to about £160,000 this is great i heard Naz gave one of his title belts that fetched £20,000 in the auction

That is great news....Sad part is they have to have the benefit in the first place....With all these Multi Million dollar purses and promotions There is no reason these guys don't have something to help them if things like this happen....Any other job does...
Hell a guy gets paid 5,000,000 no reason why a half of a percent or something be taken out for a fund...For all fighters...Almost like disability
Hell anything would help...How about something like when there are fines for coming in 2 lbs over....Give that fine towards the cause...

CC for this comment mate i totally agree paul ingle was their too and he had that career ending fight also their should be some sort of proper charity where fighters have to give a percentage of there purse no matter what because any fighter can get injured so they could all benefit because you never know what could happen to you in a fight because Watson or the G man never expected this to happen to them

Truth is IMO the only way this will ever happen is if the fans demand it.....Boycott a few huge events hurt the promoters,,governing bodies and athletic commissions where it counts and they will start singing a new tune....CC back to ya

Yes your right its the money men who can make this happen the boxing board should do something too fighters like De la hoya,Lewis,Mayweather,Hopkins,Holyfield could all part with a few million and would,nt even notice

I'm sure I don't need to reiterate the previous statements but you're right on the button, in that something needs to be brought in, because Geralg McLellan is really only the tip of the iceberg, and an extreme case of how injuries within the sport can affect someone's life outside the squared circle.
I would agree that there is enough money in the sport for this sort of fund to be set up, though it may take an agreement between the governing bodies in every country to set it up, with an international agreement that 0.5% or 1% of all the fees go into a fund, and with the support of the governing bodies it could happen.

To be fair though surely a boxer could do this anyway through a life insurance policy if he wanted to?
You hear all the time about famous people insuring parts of their body for millions of dollars then why doesn't a boxer do this?
If I was a pro boxer I'd make setting up some kind of insurance policy for myself a priority.
I agree that the boxing organisations should do more but still every fighter has a certain amount of self responsibility too.
If your house gets burgled or burns down and you've got no home contents insurance it's tough luck pretty much.
Why gamble with your health when you could be paying into a monthly insurance fund yourself?

Because insurance policies are predicated on Risk pools.... I would think the premium on a policy like that would be not even worth it...
Examples:
Smokers pay a higher premium than non smokers on life insurance some carriers wont even cover pre existing conditiond because of the risks
I'm a Business manager for a car dealer, I offer goods and services to protect collateral and credit, Lets just say if you were to but an 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 75,000 miles... I can only sell you a strictly Powertrain only warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles at a price of about $2000, now if you were to buy a brand new 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee I can sell you a Comprehensive warranty that would mimic the Factory coverage for 72 months or 100,000 miles for about $1900...
It looks like a shit deal for the guy with the 2002 getting 2 year coverage and only powertrain, but there is more risk of his breaking down so hence the limited coverage and higher premium.
This would be the problem with insurances for boxers :-\ See what I mean Bilbs ;)
