Wacko's Drunken RBR of Barrera vs Marquez! Last minute help from superheavyrhun
Hello bwoyo’s! Once again…tis on.
We got one hell of a fight in the making coming up this weekend and the makings of a great year.
This Saturday night (March 17th, 2007) in Las Vegas Nevada three title featherweight champion (that’s excluding the NABF, NABO, & USBA Featherweight straps that he also held) Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (50 fights, 46 wins with 35 ko's, 3 losses, & 1 draw) takes another grandiose step as he once again steps into the ring to prove his greatness. The only problem is that he’s stepping hoping out of his weight class and stepping in against future Hall of Famer & fellow Mexican legend “the Baby Faced Assassin”.
Yep…we’re finally here folks. This could turn out to be one of the most exciting fights of the year. Marco Antonio Barrera (68 fights, 63 wins with 42 ko's, & 4 losses) once again proves why he is a shoe in for the rankings of Canastota, New York as he risks his record against one of the more dynamic fighters to come out of Mexico in years. Barrera himself has also garnered much praise and respect for being a champion of three weight classes…so the man is no slouch himself.
It’s really REALLY tuff to pick a favorite here due to the many varying factors of the match up.
Don’t try to front and say that you already know the outcome…because this one can change in any second of any round. Now…I gotta warn you all…while I respect ole’ Marco (Polo! Heh heh heh. Ahem…tip your waitress…I‘m here all night.) and think that he’s a great boxer, good for boxing, & blah blah blah…I aint rootin for the guy to win.
What can I say? I’m a J to M to the Is-M fan.
That being said…let’s get into what I have affectionately come to call…the Wackster’s Factors of the Fight.
Factors for and against Marco Antonio Barrera:
#1: Juan Manuel Marquez. This is an amazing match up…years in the making. Marquez himself being who he is will be one of the biggest factors of this fight. Marquez is an amazing technical boxer and he’s one hell of a counter puncher…it’s been years since Barrera has fought a fighter of his abilities. While Barrera is gifted, he’s easily pulled into unnecessary exchanges and fire fights that are more costly than beneficial. If Marquez comes in with a game plan instead of just trying to slap an exclamation on a statement by stopping Barrera…Marco will have a horrible night ahead of him. Marquez is just as capable of standing his ground in a war as he is in moving and shaking things up…I honestly believe that Marquez is Barrera’s match and that this is a bad fight for him to take. Now…all that being said…Marquez has already stated that he’s coming to knock Marco out…so…if that’s the case it equates to the edge being in Barrera’s favor.
#2: Age. While there’s still a lot of fight left in him…there’s no doubt that Barrera’s had some “war time” waged on him over the last few years. Going toe to toe and trading shots with Morales and Pacquiao takes it’s toll on you no matter who you are or how great you may be. Marquez is just the man to bring the war straight to Barrera…the question will be can he handle the abilities of Marquez.
#3: Power. Honestly…I see this being a factor in Barrera’s favor. Speaking of combatants, Barrera has stopped 42 soldiers in the field…dramatically if I do say so myself. While Barrera himself has been stopped…it’s been by one of the heaviest handed fighters of the featherweight game…the same very man that dropped Marquez three times during their encounter: Manny Pacquiao. That leads me to our next factor…
#4: Chin. Again…another factor that I see this being in Barrera’s favor. While Barrera has been stopped…it’s only been once in 68 matches. He’s gone toe to toe (as stated in Factor #2) with some show stoppers and he’s only been stopped one time. That speaks bounds for his chin. Huge factor. Huge.
#5: Experience. This is one that…well…I just don’t know about. Barrera’s got a mountain of experience compared to Marquez…but Marquez is a different type of fighter. I’ll leave this one open…but lean towards Marco just based on the fact that he’s seen pretty much everything out there…but he hasn’t seen Marquez…so I just can’t be secure with saying he’s got this one on his side.
Factors for and against Juan Manuel Marquez:
#1: Marco Antonio Barrera. He’s the biggest factor of all. While some think that Barrera is on the slide after his loss to Pacquiao & his questionable matches against Rocky Juarez back in 2006, I say that Barrera still has enough gas in his tank to make it a ruff night for my guy. Barrera has been in with some of the tuffest punchers from Super Fly to Super Feather. I gotta believe that he can take Marquez’s best. Edge to Barrera.
#2: Age. Although both men are the same age of 33 years old…Marquez is 33 years young compared to Barrera in Wacko’s opinion. Marquez’s style has always pushed him just out of harm’s way & his tactics have kept him from suffering some of the brutal battles that have defined Marco Antonio Barrera’s career…of course that is also one of the reasons that Marquez isn’t held in such high regard as Barrera. Like his style or not…he’s still less shop worn. Edge to Marquez.
#3: Power. Here again…this is a factor that I believe falls in Barrera’s corner. While Marquez does have power in both hands…he seems to do better when following a game plan instead of coming to the fight looking for a war. Barrera’s power will most likely shine over Marquez’s…so let’s just see how long my guy can hold out. I still say that if he goes into a trading match…he won’t like the outcome. Barrera’s power is underrated.
#4: Abilities. Truthfully…I see Marquez holding the advantages here. He’s slick and as I have already stated and as the man himself has already proven…he’s one hell of a counter puncher. If he stays sharp and uses the ring as he usually does…he’ll win this one down the stretch.
#5: Chin. Marquez has a damned fine chin. Pacquiao dropped him three times and Marquez got up off of the mat and took the fight to a draw. That speaks for itself…couple that with the fact that no man has ever stopped him…equal edge to Marquez. This could be a war of the chins. Heh heh heh.
Now…those are my factors…I‘m sure that you guys have others…maybe even points that hit the mark better than your loyal, loveable, drunken fight reporter…of sorts…all things aside…here‘s something that I want to toss out to ya‘s…read these two quotes & this should open the door for some free thinking and some seriously heated discussions.
"This is one of the most important fights of my career and I think I am going to knock out Barrera," said Juan Manuel Marquez. "Barrera has fought a lot, but I'm at the peak of my career and it is time for him (Barrera) to retire and for me to take the reign."
"Juan Manuel (Marquez) thinks he is going to knock me out, I'd like to see him try," said Barrera. "He (Marquez) is dreaming that he is going to win, but the difference will show that his dreams are not reality. Instead he should be training because I am going to shut his mouth with my punches not with words."
Nuff said babe.
These fwockers are coming to go to war.
So…as always…for those of you that are either to broke, willing to wait, or just to gotdam cheap to shell it out for Golden Boy’s PPV extravaganza…Wacko’s here for ya.
It’s time for us to break bread.
Head to the kitchen and break out the chips and salsa, toss the remote, pick your spot on the couch, plop down at your PC or just warm your lap with your laptop…but please, please, let’s not forget to pour up our poisons of choice…it’s fight night and the gloves are coming off.
Not really though…that was a bit overly dramatic.
As always…enjoy the matches and I hope you dig on the coverage. I’ll keep it as legible as I possibly drunkenly can.
Cheers…oh…and koneecheewah bitches.
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
I'm picking Juan Manuel by decision...mainly because I never EVER pick against Marquez...not since I watched him lay a straight up beating on Jimenez years ago.
Marquez has the goods...no doubt...but will they be good enough?
I think so...but this is one hell of an even match up...which leads me to think that this could be a FOTY candidate in the making.
One thing about it...2007 is going to be a fight fan's wet dream.
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
I wanna say late stopage win for JMM but MAB's heart and warriorness tells me JMM decision.....
So I voted JMM UD....
With a late rally by JMM to win the fight....
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
I CANNOT wait for this fight!!! Has the potential to be something very special!
Im picking Barrera. I dont think Barrera is on the slide, I just happen to think he evolved his style for his fights with Juarez. He had some dodgy moments fighting with a bust up nose, but otherwise played it safe and worked a victory. The second fight was more conclusive and Barrera barely gave Juarez a chance to land clearly. Not that it seemed that Juarez was trying too hard to land either! That was a shut out, and again with plenty to spare. Im sure when pushed there is still enough in that tank.
Marquez is indeed a quality fighter though and I do have my doubts about how this could turn out for Marco. There are a lot of unknown elements about this fight. A lot of tangents at play. Marquez may have stated that he is coming to stop Barrera and he has been evolving his style by coming forward more and being the aggressor...but we know he has quality skills. And likewise Barrera has a history of going to war but in recent fights has boxed and resisted getting into brawls.
It all depends on which fighter brings the correct plan to the table come fight night and who is able to execute it the most effectively. And then its about who can adapt the best to any changes that develop throughout the fight. Its intriguing. A chess match with certain amount of violence thrown in to keep it edgy!!
Barrera is my fighter and that who im going with, but Marquez is a risky name to be going in against. Marco needs to be as near to his best as possible....

I'm really on the fence for this and not sure which way to bet.
Thankfully I saw Miles was siding with Barrera so now I can happily mortgage my house if I want on a nice easy win for Marquez ;D

Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
I think this one might depend on how much JMM goes for the KO. I think that would be a huge mistake on his part - not to say he shouldn't go for it if he sees the opening, but to go in against MAB looking for the KO just plays right into his strengths.
On the other hand, if JMM fights a smart, strategic fight, I think he can pull out a VERY hard fought decision. MAB won't lay down for him, no way.
FOY? This one has the potential to be one of the best of all time, IMO.
I'll vote sentimental - I hope JMM wins just to get the credibility that I feel he deserves (and always has). JMM by SD in a fight we'll talk about for some time.
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
Wheres Missy? ???
Ain't read one word on her thoughts about the fight.... Interesting in seeing what she thinks about the scrap....
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
JMM gets off the canvas and wins via KO in a close match 8)
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
Howz goin' Wacko, it's been a while since I came crashin' into you party... we're finally here, indeed, hahaaay, this is about the only statement I agree with the great Wacko here...just kiddin ;D
This fight should have happened a long time ago. THE fight has a potential of being a GREAT fight to be talked about for generations to come (am I exagerratin' again) full of explosions OR it can turn out to be a dud - a counter-punchin' chicken dance. Let's just hope for a bomb...
What shall I say? I think it's Marco by KO, and if Wacko and the other Marquez gang say that's because of my being a pac-fan, then I'll just plead guilty smiling like this ;D for the sake of world peace. But geeze, almost everyone here is taken in by the pac-three-knockdown-coming-back-to-win myth! Even the most fanatical of the Barrera fan are affected by that myth. (c'mon Game, what's this 115-113, 116-113, 115-113 UD thing, that's timid of you, man, just say KO in 3!). All right, before my SC's gets piling up, let me get serious.
Why do I say Barrera? Let me start by saying he's fought much bigger fights than Marquez - way faaar by a mile. Second, Barrera has one of the toughest chin in the market, I think between the three, he's number 2, just behind Morales but just ahead of Pac. This is one of the most important factor in this fight, IMO, though it may sound a bit stupid. Why so? It's simply because once Barrera knows that he can take his opponent's punch, he will just go on swarming him until the KO, and I think he can, though let me say that Marquez IS a big puncher, no doubt. But see, Marco, at least in his prime, usually just keep on eatin' them big punches. Remember how he ate tons and tons of Pac's punches, one of the best in the market, and was still standing 'til the 11th and didn't go down until the end? - it was the towel that send him out, fools. But you may ask why did Juarez give him trouble? It's because Juarez was extremely effective from the inside and Marco played right into his game, in contrast with the way Winks handled Quartey's pestering inside game. Once Marco realized that, he just stood outside and bingo, he made Juarez look like a fool - can you imagine the big turnaround? So you see, I see Marco swarming Marquez and eventually stopping him, IF, he is in a good condition and I think you'll know if he is so right in the first round - if you see him coming strong I think that's it, otherwise, I'll leave it to you guyz.
So what about this much 'vaunted' counterpunching ability of Marquez. All I can say is that his counterpunching is good for only once per fighter, I must qualify that with 'good' (fighter), though. Why? It's because his counterpunching comes in a definite, predicatable pattern. Marquez just wait for his opponent to attack, and just as his opponent attacks, he steps aside a bit and comes with a 1-2-3 combos, usually consisting of right, left, uppercut and sometimes with a body shot. Once a boxer can see the pattern, the magic of Marquez couterpunching will just go pfffft just like the magic of Juarez' inside fight going nuts in the rematch. Marquez' counterpunching is different from Floyd's, where the Pretty Boy relies on natural instinct and reflex like a cat (that can actually be developed though, as some chinese kung-fu experts do) than relying on a specific pattern. That's what makes Pretty boy hard to predict and effective. But having said all that, I wasn't really thinking much about the counterpunching because I think it wouldn't have mattered to a well-conditioned Barrera. As I've said before, I think he'll just come swarming right into Marquez...
But on the other hand, this could just turn into a 12 rounds of chicken dance, but for pete's sake, let's hope not... ...But seriously, what if this turn into a counterpunching exhibition match? What'll it be like. I have a nagging feeling that it's almost impossible for Marquez to win on a decision simply because Barrera has been uncle Golden Boy's favorite and I've seen him using many tricks under his sleeves to make his favored ones win. As much as I admire Oscar as a fighter, I think he should stay away from boxing promotions.
Was I so unkind to Marquez? Well I quess those pics of his fooling around with some quyz musta have affected me. ;D Actually, I don't give a damn what he or she is as long as he fights like a MAN and to be little kind to Marquez, he does just that once on a ring, so let's give him a break from this faggy thang, folks...
...After all have been said, let us all, me, Wacko and all of you, for or aqainst whichever fighter, raise up our glasses and greet each others 'cheers' - may the better man win! and may that be Barrera. ;D ;)
Re: It's just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Barrera vs Marquez
:coolclick: great write up wack;
The only two points i wish to add (that cancell eachother out) are...
Marque: The biggest fight of his life IMO. Every great fighter has one very special fight in them, and its now or never for Marquez - i expect him to bring one of those special fights to the ring this saturday.
Barrera: So many great fights, so many great wars - one of the greatest mexican and boxers of all time! but come this saturday a loss will be unthinkable for him. He has lost before and come back, but after stating not long ago he only has a handfull of fights left in him, lossing now would spell the end of his carrer, maybe one more home coming fight but that would be it. So i would expect barrera to come to the ring and bring a very special fight - there is no way i can possibly see this fight not going the full 12!
