LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
Some of these Blood baths went on for well over 30/40 mins and bareknuckle :o
With that in mind who from the 'Gloved era' would have been top ;)
Im thinking that fighters who put opponents away fast (to save facial damage) would be high up ie Tyson and G-Man etc.
What do you reckon and why?
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
Tyson might be the only one IMO...he has the skills and he is crazy.
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...

IMAGINE the rumble in the Jungle bareknuckle :o

Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
David Tua can put people away quickly see Moorer and Ruiz
To be honest Smash modern generation would beat alot of bareknuckle fighters in the old days they wern't as good technique wise sure they were tough sob but i would pick modern greats over them mate.
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
Depending on weight classes...I'd lean towards the Nard. Hell of a chin & a toe to toe shooter who in the start of his career did a lot of one shot stops.
He'd do well.
Again...anyone with a chin & crack!
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
MRS Smash got me a bareknucle legends book a few years back and one fight in the late 1800's went on for nearly an hour and a half with one fighter dead afterwards.
The saying "your not up to scratch" comes from this era where instead of 3 min rounds when there was a knockdown if the fighter couldn't get back to the chalk line across center ring ready to fight he would lose.
that was considered a 'Round'-a KO so you could have 5,6,7 etc within 5 mins.
This is why we used to have 90 rounders etc 8)
One chap even trained his bareknuckles by using an oak tree as a punchbag giving him 'Horny spikes' on his knuckles so as to inflict more damage.
I'll dig it out and let you know the name.
Great book ;)
Thank me later
Love always

I think the Sweet Science has evolved!!
Do you really think people in the Bareknuckle era were all simpleton brutes with a big crack and a good chin ?
The fights that went on for hours were not fought at any great pace alot of the time when a fighter was down it was gentlemanly to wait for him to recover and come back upto scratch !!!

;D ;D
Clued up you are ;)
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
Gloves are a huge part of defence, I think only the power punchers would prevail. Someone who eeks out a decision and pitter patters would bust their hands.

That fighter i believe you refer to is Tom Cribb!
He fought a legendary Black fighter Bill richman andl Tom Molynuex both Americans ( Spelling might be wrong )
Tom Cribb fought TM in a field in East Grinstead in West sussex the fight was mentioned on the front page of the Times all this whilst around the time of the battle of trafalgar.
Bill RIchmand was one of the 1st Black men to be Knighted and become a Lord .
The story has Holywood written all over it .
Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
yeah the black fella was part of a group or slaves (7 of them) who served some posh racist english tits.
Anyway the slaves had bags put over their heads and were put in a room and told to fight ???
The winner was Mr Monilyuex and thats how he was selected as a Bareknuckle fighter ;)
Heres the book in question 8)

Re: LET'S PUT THE MODERN FIGHTER INTO THE BAREKNUCKLE ERA...
i think it really is a question of good defense (hopefully you wouldnt need to have a good chin!) and a power shot. Lennox lewis would do well,as would the usual suspects, tyson, foreman, frazier. however, surprisingly there was less emphasis on power in the bareknuckle era, punches came from the arms and volume of punches was deemed more important than power.perhaps this is due to the fact that a relatively little amount of power is needed to knock an opponent down when a shot is thrown minus gloves.
