Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff

Look into any era and you’re likely to find fighters that have been ducked by the best of their time. They are simply too good or too dangerous. It’s high risk, low reward - a threat to the gravy train. In 2007, Antonio Margarito (34-4, 24 KO’s) is the likely candidate.
The Tijuana, Mexico native has spent the last couple of years or so calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr., considered by many boxings’ pound 4 pound maestro. There were countless articles and arguments on the topic. Hardcore fans were split down the middle. If you agreed Mayweather was ducking Margarito, you were labeled a ‘Floyd hater’ and would refer to Mayweather as ‘Fraud’ Mayweather. They believed, as Margarito’s promoter Bob Arum put it, that Margarito was the most feared man in boxing. If you sided with Mayweather, your rebuttal was, “Who is Antonio Margarito? Who has he beaten? Nobody knows who he is?”
Well that ship has sailed. Mayweather has cashed in his “golden egg” But, while Margarito pursued a Mayweather bout Paul “The Punisher” Williams (32-0, 24 KO’s) quickly came up the ranks and became Margarito’s mandatory. Williams, who felt he was being avoided, decided to do some campaigning of his own. Williams and his fans, along with the “Who is Margarito?” crowd began referring to Margarito as “Antonio Hypocrito” because he decided to skip his mandatory and give up his WBO title to face Miguel Cotto for his WBA welterweight title. Williams was now referred to as the most feared mandatory in boxing, and having previously sparred with Margarito, told some people that he gave him the business, cut him, and even put him down. The word spread fast, but is it true?
“Nah, it was all lies to try to get a shot at me,” Margarito said over the phone. “He said that he cut me. How many cuts do I have? Two - from Daniel Santos. He said that he knocked me down. All lies that he will have to eat come fight night!”
So with a mega bout against Cotto looming, why fight Williams?
“I decided to fight Paul Williams because they did not want to recognize me in the Cotto fight,” Margarito explained. “They wanted me to face him as the challenger and I did not want to give up my title without a fight. We came to terms with Cotto and if we both win our next fights’, we will face each other then.”
Margarito has a tough assignment against the undefeated Williams. They both offset their porous defense with offense—lots and lots of offense. Margarito is a long pressure fighter with pop and a world class chin. He overwhelms his opponents with hard, straight punches in combinations that never cease to stop. Williams, a southpaw, is an even longer boxer/pressure fighter who has shown a good chin and decent power as well. So how will Margarito negate all of William’s physical advantages, including his freakish 82 inch reach (that’s even one inch longer than the current IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klistachko)?
“We’re going to get on the inside and not let him get distance,” Margarito pointed out. “The thing is he says that he wants to box and come forward. We’ll see how he responds come fight night when he is going backwards and we’re challenging him downstairs.”
Although the Margarito-Williams is still missing and actual date, Margarito is anxious to get into the ring and devour Williams.
“The date hasn’t been set, but one thing is sure, we’ll be eating chocolate,” Margarito confidently responded. It has become the insult of choice for Mexican athletes who mean business. If you play team sports, you eat the mascot. For an individual sport, you eat your opponent.
Margarito is completely confident of his fighting skills, and that he will achieve victory. He even revealed that after he beats Williams and the winner of the Cotto-Judah bout that he’s going to add a little sugar to his diet.
“I heard Mosley has mentioned my name and I think it would be a good fight - he has two wins over Oscar De La Hoya. But, we’re ready for anyone they put in front of us.”
Margarito-Williams should be a barn-burner with someone not hearing the final bell.
Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
Honestly...I'd love to see Williams hammer Margarito out due to the fact that I believe Margarito is over hyped...but I say that Margarito's experience will pull him through against Williams.
So what the fwock does that say about Williams?
To green for Margarito...but I'd love for him to prove me wrong. ;D

Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
I am sure we our all sick of the hype machine surronding Margarito. Arum started it and it has been on a role ever since. The WW tournament between Judah, Cotto, Margarito, and Williams will be alot of clarity to the division. Mosley will also be a force. I would love to see a unified champ.
Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
I am no longer talking smack about Margarito, he has balls and I give him alot of credit for taking this fight. He could say the same thing as Floyd did, who is Paul Williams? Hes not ditching his title which I think should be commended. I still think Paul will work him over come fight night but I wouldnt be that disappointed if Margarito won. Props to Tony for standing up to Arum and making his own decisions.

I know. Arum has nothing but hype fighters.
He had
ODLH
PBF
Still has
Cotto
Pavlik
Margarito.
Arum has no eye for talent and all of these guys are nothing more than hype jobs.
I know, I am guilty of calling Kelly Pavlik one of those hyped fighters in Arums stable. :-[

I never said anything about those other fighters, I only came up with Margarito because we need to see alot more of him before we say something like " he is the most feared man in the sport" or " he is the most dangerous man in the sport". He has much to prove before we go there.

You say this and nobody bashes you.
I say this and people are saying I'm not commiting to a prediction.
I got 20 on margarito to beat the green williams
Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
To say Williams is green is foolish. How is he green? Hes had as many fights as Tony. He's had an amatuer career like Tony. Isn't Tony green too by that thinking? Wasn't Pavlik green too? Saying he's green is just an excuse so IF Tony wins, people will just say well PW was green. BS. Williams is more dangerous than anyone so called P4P fighters have fought. Margarito idnd't have to take this fight but he did and deserves credit for it.
PW is probably the most dangerous WW on the face of the planet. Period. He's huge and he's dangerous. He's ANOTHER dangerous name on Tony's resume. Where are the idiots saying Tony is ducking him? And IF Tony beats him, that like his 7 or 8 RING top 10 ranked fighter.

I have most of Tony's fights and that qualifies me to say he is too high risk low reward for most of the top names. His style would give them fits.

I can understand that and I respect your opinion but no way is PW green. How? Margarito recieved a bit of hype from Arum, but those in the know, know that he was dangerous before then. They hype was just to get his name around and it did. Thats why Floyd looks like an ass when he as asks who is Tony? Makes him look stupid.
Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
The factors in this fight are Williams chin, is it good enough? Margaritos boxing ability, is it good enough? Williams has got the style down he is alot like hearns, but without the super right hand. But he can throw all different punches from all different angles. Margarito is just a gritty brawler, you can see him winding up from a mile away, but his reach is so damn long hes sneaky with those from long range. To be honest I see either a mid round K.O. for Margarito or a Williams decision. I know Im still picking Williams, dont start callin me a traitor.
Re: Antonio Margarito Calls Paul Williams’ Bluff
It will certainl be a close fight, these 2 are similar in style but unless Paul has improved his D,I favour Tony. Margarito will take this fight on the inside,he can shorten his punches well and he has superb right and left hand uppercuts which would be huge weapons.
It would suit Pauls interests to fight on the outside, use his jab,put the combinations together, rack up the points but I don't think he is good enough to avoid going to war at some point,on the inside. Margarito should definitely work Pauls' body and will test his chin too.
There are lots of factors but I still fancy Margarito to win. And if he comes in 100% injury free and prepares well, then he will win imo. If he doesn't,if the preparations are poor like for the Clottey fight,he'll lose. Sergio Diaz(manager) better fwocking sort some good sparring out the prick!
