Team Jermain Taylor In Turmoil As Lou DiBella Labels Manny Steward, Flack Blatant Liars!

To hear Lou DiBella tell it, Jermain Taylor trainer Emanuel Steward must be wearing the kind of “Hot Pants” that Soul Brother No. 1 James Brown used to scream about. Not literally but figuratively going by the old nursery school rhyme of “liar, liar, pants en fuego.”
Responding to my exclusive interview with Kronk’s Goldfather, in which Steward said he did not “hand pick” slinky and stinky southpaw Cory Spinks as middleweight champion Taylor’s May 19 Memphis/HBO opponent, DiBella came right out and labeled the Hall Of Fame trainer and HBO analyst “a blatant liar” about how Spinks became Taylor’s opponent.
Less than a week after he took a split decision over Spinks in a tedious bout. Taylor is in the midst of another fight, one pitting competing interests inside his own camp. Team Taylor is about as divided as Iraq right now. This internecine warfare could escalate from its current verbal vitriol to worse at the drop of another adjective or two.
But the liar tag was not DiBella’s only verbal volcanic eruption against Steward, either. He is also charging Steward and the publicist that Taylor and his chief trainer share, Norman Horton, are conspiratorially spreading falsities about the duration of his promotional deal with the unbeaten 160-pounder. Horton, by the way, used to flack it up for DiBella.
DiBella claims his deal with Taylor is “a multiyear deal” while he said that Steward and Horton have been phoning prominent fight scribes to tell them DiBella is “desperate” to make a big bout for Taylor because his promo contract runs out in September. (Horton
“Emanuel is trying to make (manager) Al Haymon look stupid and, more importantly, trying to make me look stupid,” DiBella said. “That ain’t happening because Emanuel can use his spin, use his jive on people back in Detroit, people he owes money to, but he can’t use that spin, that jive on me.
“I like Emanuel and he’s been a friend. But, if what www.boxingconfidential.com quoted him as saying in that exclusive interview is true and he said that, then he is a liar because those quotes and that position as to what happened are false.”
DiBella then gave his version as to what happened when Sergio Mora, the fighter from “The Contender” got cold feet about fighting one state away from Taylor’s Arkansas home. The promoter said he, his VP Carl Moretti and DBE matchmaker Joe Quiambao got on a conference call with the powerful Haymon.
“They were five possible opponents to replace Mora,” DiBella said. “Arthur Abraham, Felix Sturm and Javier Castillejo all turned a Taylor fight down. So that left Kelly Pavlik, Edison Miranda, Amin Asikainen from Finland the WBO mandatory guy Khoren Gevorgyan from Armenia. HBO did not want the Finnish guy or the Armenian guy so the list was whittled to three, Pavlik, Miranda and Cory.
"Al then went to Taylor adviser-confidante-co-trainer Ozell Nelson. Ozell went to Emanuel and it was Emanuel who chose Cory Spinks even though we all had agreed that, while Jermain would win the fight, he would look crappy against that running style.”
DiBella cited Wally Hall’s column in Thursday's Arkansas Democrat in which Nelson tells it the same way and is quoted saying, “Look, just blame me because I should have said no when Manny said he wanted Spinks.”
Here’s the gist of what Goldfather Manny told me Wednesday night, as reported on www.boxingconfidential.com:
Steward vehemently denied continual reports, spread by someone who is not his friend, that he personally “handpicked” marathon runner and stinking southpaw Cory Spinks as Taylor’s May 19 foe.
“I said before the **beep** ass fight that it would be a **beep** ass fight. I said it at the preflight press conference in Memphis,” Steward said. “From Day One, I did not want this running, giving angles, you touch him and he runs southpaw as Jermain’s opponent. I am not his manager. I am not his promoter. I do not pick Jermain’s opponents. If it was Andy Lee or one of the guys I manage and train, that’s a different story. As it was they called me, and said Jermain is fighting Cory Spinks."
I see someone or some people walking the plank right off the S.S. Taylor any moment now.
Someone is not telling the truth. Someone will pay the consequences. Team Taylor is Team Turmoil right now and no one can deny that. These aren’t a few whitecaps on an otherwise tranquil ocean. This looks like the precursor to a tsunami.
