Opinions on Mike McCallum?
From what I've seen he looked to have real good power, a fantastic body puncher (hence the nickname I suppose haha). Knocked out Julian Jackson (giving him his first loss). Beat Steve Collins, prime Herol Graham and knocked out Michael Watson. And had a good, compeditive trilogy with James Toney when he was well past his prime.
What do you think of McCallum? Is he underrated? Overrated?
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Underrated imo only really hardcore fans really know him now i didn't really know much about him few years ago but he has a great chin tell me how many guys at 40 could go 12 roudns with a prime Roy Jones Jr ?? alot of people ducked McCallum and he was very unlucky not to atleast win 2 out of 3 fights vs Toney he is one of the greats shame he didn't fight the legendary 4 Duran Hearns Hagler and Leonard.
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Hall of Famer who is/was the best fighter to ever come out of Jamaica, a country that has produced a disproportionate number of great fighters. Knew his way around the ring and could work the body to break down his opponents. Very difficult to manage as he was his own man, but who can argue with his success.

Ted you got it spot on cc
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Damn, its a shame it took me so long to find out about him. Up until about 4 weeks ago, I only knew him as the old guy who took a beating from Jones and lost to Toney. I heard he was a great body puncher but I only got to see it for the first time 2 weeks ago.

Ted can't help it but ask who do you see following Mike at the #2 position of Jamaican fighters?
I see it this way:
Mike McCallum
O'Neil Bell
Simon Brown
Glen Johnson
Otis Grant
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Johnson definitely in front of Brown and Bell.
But about McCallum, absolutely sucks the guy never ever seemed to have caught a break. He had a huge fight lined up with the pound for pound number 1 Donald Curry, and what does Curry do? Loses to an unknown named Lloyd Honneygan. Comes close to securing a Hagler bout many times, when he finally thinks he has it, Leonard comes out of his retirement. Then had some injury problems when he finally fought at 160, he came up a tad bit short against Sumbalay.
Most of his real high profile bouts came at 160 after injury problems and well past his best years. Against Toney, you can tell he just didn't have any snap in his punch and he faded down the stretch but still made for a hell of a fight.
IMO, he is the best 154 lber ever and peaked with his KO over Curry. He was spectacular that night.

I gotta disagree.
Bell a Universally recognized Unified Champ. at Cruiser 3rd since Holyfield.
That to speaks more then Johnsons win over RJJ.
I will say Glen takes it as far as quality of opposition but hes lost his fair share of fights to most of them.
Brown I mean was a champ. for like 4 yrs. and unified the titles when he beat Maurice Blocker (which I just happen to see this fight for the 1st time last week) what a good scrap that was by the way. He then upsets Norris after that he was never to be. :P
But I could see an arguement for Johnson if you made one. I just don't see any type of consistency in Glens career I mean shit! HUGE credit for that roll he was on when he beat Woods, RJJ and Tarver consecutively I just don't think that those 3 fights speak more then what Brown and Bell did and have done.
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Not going to make it long, but longevity has to count for something, and the fact that he is having some of his best years this late is just fantastic. Quite honestly I don't know much about Brown other then the gift he got versus Wright.
But Bell, I mean he has one impressive win. Got a gift against Brown, and had to come back late versus Rothmann. Maybe if he does more down the line then I guess he could climb the list, but right now he has 1 win of any significance. And he had to get a gift to be put in the situation.
Johnson on the other hand has worked for everything and has beat a lot more top class opposition, and was Fighter of the Year in 05.

I don't think Brown fought Winky unless your referring to another Wright?

I can agree with this. :)

I'm thinking of Harry Simon. I thought that's who you put down my fault.

Not a problem amat...
I think Simons from Uganda or Namibia might be South African. ??? Somewhere out there. :P
Re: Opinions on Mike McCallum?
Yeah I think South Africa that's where he fought Wright and it was pretty much all Simon fans. I guess I could check boxrec but I really don't have the urge to ;D
