Lets Try To Clear Up Some Of The Misconceptions Of Grappling and MMA
PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THREAD....... IN ALL FAIRNESS WESTERN BOXING IS CONSIDERED A MARTIAL ART AS WELL AND AT LEAST SOME WILL LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THE ORGINS OF THE GRAPPLING ARTS
Let me tell you the premise of Grappling and Submissions.... most Street fights and scuffles end on the ground, a submission is a form of pain compliance which if continuosly applied, results in muscle, tendon and ligament destructions and bone breaks which severly incapacitates an attacker thats why they Tap out for sport purposes.... Thats why it is EXTREMELY effective for street fighting and self defense....
Grappling has been around for centuries and various cultures have their own styles in one form or another or have adopted other cultures and modified to be indigenous to their region and often utilized during hand to hand combat in wartime.. Some are more visicuous than others, the Filipino arts are some of the most brutal in the history of mankind......
Thats one of the biggest misconceptions about Mainstream MMA is that its only been around for 15 years or so which is true, but Martial Arts have been around for 100's of years and was meant for a form of survival, before there were guns and missles etc.. wars were fought hand to hand, even with bladed weapons Grappling is highly effective..... Grappling is considered a Martial Art and Boxing is too albeit they are both incomplete systems and are not profeciant in all ranges of combat, when utilized by its self
Re: Lets Try To Clear Up Some Of The Misconceptions Of Grappling and MMA
A lot of Martial Arts and Grappling are rich in tradition Ju Jitsu, Judo, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Shooto, Sambo, Dumog etc... So thats why I get passionate when some degrade, the dedication, skill, hardwork and discipline it takes to study and be effective in these arts... When I here people use words like "Clowns" I get severly pissed
Re: Lets Try To Clear Up Some Of The Misconceptions Of Grappling and MMA
So even though it may not be your choice of entertainment, its got Great Roots and tradition too and thats why it isint some fad that will go away like MC HAMMER pants ;D But it deserves a little more respect than the shat that gets heaped all over it

They don't even use grappling hooks.
Just messing with you.
Good post.
I still like boxing more than MMA
that is why I will watch a MMA fight here and there.
I still think that boxing will be here 100 years from now and these MMA guys will still be trying to re-invent the wheel.
This too shall pass. (FAD)
BTW CC for the post.

It was a good post, but you really didn't clear a whole lot up.. No offence. All you did was establish that individual martial arts have rich histories and tradition, and that there are incredibly schooled athletes who train religiously in them... But I don't think anyone would argue that.. As far as MIXED martial arts, you admit that it's only been around 15 years, and so naturally you don't have the same calibre of athletes who partake in it. At least imo.. Someone could be an 11th degree kung fu black belt with incredible skills and athletic ability... But if they may lose to some trailer trash who could tackle them and drop some elbows, then why would they bother to fight in MMA??
Re: Lets Try To Clear Up Some Of The Misconceptions Of Grappling and MMA
What kind of disrespectful asshole would call mma fighters Clowns? ;D

Because in MMA you are profecient in all ranges of combat.... Offense and Defense, you have to be aware of all those ranges and how fast you move in and out of them, in Boxing you are defending from the groin up and you can only hit the front of your opponent..... Its only 1 range, different fighters are comfortable standing or on the ground... Same as an inside fighter in Boxing or an outside fighter... See in a real world application an MMA fighter is a complete fighter he can fight standing, in the clinch, on the ground ETC....

MMA was a legit thing when it first came out....they now want to be seen as the same hardcore bada**es from the first couple of UFC's....but since then they have gotten rid of biting, punches to the groin, eye gouging, fish hooks, ear/nose pulling, kicking while opponent is down and holding on to the cage to stomp the opponent the UFC is not even a shell of what it used to be......it's a glorified street fight with all the danger taken out of it.....get me in an arm bar and I will rip, beat or bite your balls off!!! Jam a thumb so far in your eye socket I could tickle your brain......oh I'm reminiscing again....What I meant to say was that the MMA now is for people that want to street fight but not willing to accept the consequences.....it's crap and it needs to be banned just like dog fighting.....

As you'll remember I used to be a hater of all things MMA but since I've started to watch more of it I think it's an excellent and exciting sport.
As you say, boxing is a western world form of mixed martial arts and is an icomplete system. If you take all of the various fighting styles and matial arts needed for a complete combat system and made a pie chart boxing's hand to hand would occupy only 1 small section of that pie chart, maybe an 8th of the entire chart.
I personally really like the concept of all unarmed combat athletes fighting each other to determine who are the best athletes and which martial arts system is the most effective.
Right now the strength in depth in MMA is nowhere near the strength in depth that is in boxing, but let's be fair here, boxing has had a 100 year headstart.
MMA now, with organistaions like the UFC, K-1 and Pride is roughly where boxing was 100 years ago, a massively popular sport especially popular with celebrities in America and a huge fanbase, especially in America and Japan. Boxing during the days of Gentleman Jim Corbett, John L Sullivan and James Jeffries is looked back upon as the pionerring golden years of the sport and I believe in 30 or 40 years time this period in MMA history will be seen as much the same.
One thing I did find hilarious on the Rogan vs Dibella debate on ESPN last week though was when Dibella called UFC human cockfighting.
Am I the only one who thought that a massive irony? The sport of boxing, hated by most of the medical profession and which routinely has calls made to ban it, feels that the UFC is cockfighting?
That's like a pornstar looking down her nose at a prostitute saying 'I would never sell my body for money like that' ::**

Again I get dissapointed when I here trainers, coaches, amatuers and Pro Boxers say something like that.... You guys forget how hard it is to train The dedication and determination and pain these guys put themselves thru to prepare. But some can say " its Crap" so matter of factly...
