Golden Boy Brings Fireworks to MGM Grand!

Moments ago Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed Boxingtalk.com that 130 pound champion Juan Manuel Marquez will square off against the always exciting Jorge "La Hiena" Barrios on September 15. Marquez-Barrios will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and headline a four fight HBO PPV telecast. "We're billing the fight as 'Fireworks' because that's what it's going to be, fireworks. In addition to the main event there will be three televised undercard fights and they will all be toe to toe battles," said the Golden CEO. Schaefer was reluctant to elaborate on who will be appearing on the undercard but assured us "there will be other well known names." As this goes to print Sugar Shane Mosley is not one of them. "Mosley will have his own date," stated Schaefer. (1:24 PM EST)

SWEET it should be a sweet fight, i'm goin with JMM unanimous decision.

This is a good match-up, I think JMM will be able to out-box Barrios all night, but for my money this one is worth the PPV

Marquez's style will stop this being a great fight but it certainly will be intereseting. JMM wide UD

JMM should look good in this fight IF he fights smart,counters,like he used to. Prior to his last 3 fights,he never used to be marked up at all,all of a sudden,he has become a bit of a banger but for this he fight,he needs to revert to counter punching. Barrios punches are wide and sloppy,JMM should win well.

I'm not impressed to be honest, it's not a bad match-up but he should be fighting Guzman, Barrera or Pacquiao. Barrios is almost 32 and really struggles to make 130lbs, and he was beaten by Guzman in Sept.

Barrios deserves this shot, hes been around forever waiting. He will make it a good fight, I'm glad he got the shot. I think he can pull it out, its not gonna be as one sided as some may think.

Same here. Boooo.

But maybe he needs a sort of tune-up slash tough fight to keep him busy.... the Barrera fight was grueling afterall.

Not a fight to be excited about, Barrios isn't the same, and when he was 'the same' his talent never guided him, it was his heart.

Only a sort of glorified 'victory lap' for Marquez.

It's a good little matchup but this is exactly what's wrong with the sport. There's no way in hell that this should be a PPV. Barrios just got handled by Guzman, why in the hell should we pay to see this fight? I'm not purchasing this crap.

You make a valid point. I don't see why this should be PPV at all!!! But JMM is stuck because everyone wants Pac!

I was checking out the two fighters records, they are identical 47-3-1 Marquez has 35 ko Barrios 34...kind of weird. You guys are talking like Guzman kicked his ass....it was a close split decision all cards were close. He was close in the Freitas fight too. I think he may surprise some of you.

JMM will beat Barrios on points.

JMM by UD. Barrios' punches are too wide, too predictable.

This is going to be on PVV?... Come on! No way!

PPV?!!! And people wonder why boxing is in dire straits. As for Marquez...as much as i love him as a fighter...he must have either the most incompetent management/advisers in the sport...or he is just incredibly unlucky. Maybe the rematch with Barrera or Pac just couldn't be made...and Barrios isn't a bum...but still....just leaves me feeling underwhelmed.

The PPV will be justified if they throw 2 more fights that have some big names. Otherwise this is not gonna generate alot of sales.....because no one knows about Barrios that isnt a knowledgeable fan.
