Re: My take on the fight.
Margarito held too though. Some of the holding also just came from Williams long arms having nowhere to go after a shot if during which Margarito closed in the distance. Margarito could of been sharper though, a rematch would still be competitive imo.
Re: My take on the fight.
:coolclick: bro I'm sure loads will disagree with you but I think you got it bang on.
Margarito pushed it to the end and in no way was embarrassed. Williams was just a phenomenon, there has never been a fighter like him at welter weight.
I know people get all hung up on his size and lack of power and use it to dismiss him by saying he's no Thomas Hearns, and I agree but not in that he's inferior just his style is totally and completely different. Apart from the height their is no similarity between the two whatsoever so quit it with the comparisons.
He's such a relentless pressure fighter who throws so many shots it's virtually impossible to relax and get any rythm going against. Any fighter who likes to sit back and enjoy their work will have a torrid time with him.
Cotto, Mayweather, Mosely, Cintron he's a threat to them all and seems hungry to fight them all which is great.
Margarito isn't done, a rematch may well be on the cards, fights with Judah, Baldimor and a rematch with Cintron are all possibilities, he's still got plenty of options.
I'd say the division just got even more interesting. So many great fighters, so many potentially great fights.
I'm just glad we get to see them all and then talk about them here on Saddo's 8)
Re: My take on the fight.
CC#1845 El Gamo, well put tho in most parts I'm with you there is 1 part I'm not and thats on the future of Margarito we both see it a bit different...
Heres my take on the fight.
What a great fight.
:appl: Thank you to both fighters for that.
What a shame for Margarito everything hes ever worked for all the wins he's had at Welter, the 7 defenses of the title down the drain. He will be discredited by anyone and everyone who doesn't like him. It's a shame cause it's completely his fault. When I saw/heard his pre-fight interview and I hear him say that he WASN'T gonna throw as many punches but that he would concentrate more on power I knew right there and then he'd loose. Cause there is no way he could win the fight throwing less. Margarito is a volume puncher thats his fight and he didn't fight his fight. As soon as the interview was over I turned to my bwoy! and told 'em I hope he was serving us a 'bluff'. Cause of course I thought he was just saying that to say it but that he didn't really mean it. Thinking he would switch it up once in the ring. Well guess what? He didn't. He went out there and just let Paul dictate the fight from early on Margarito didn't throw enough and he started off waaaaaaaaaaaaay to late, when you possilby loose the first 6 rds. straight theres a HUGE problem. Now let's be honest here Margarito was catching a lot of punches with his gloves Pauls jabs were more like slaps then jabs BUT the fact of the matter is he looked active and busier then Margarito he did it threw out the fight even when he lost rounds Paul threw more. Add that to those big shots that Williams was landing here and there and you got yourself one good performance thru 6 rds.
I can't hack at Williams for his win no excuses. However if you can't see that he was geniunely hugging Margarito early on then I don't know what to tell you. Cause I sure as hell didn't jump in my car snuck in the Home Depot Center leaned through ropes and told the ref.
'Pssst, pssst..... hey!! Williams is huggin too much wadda 'ya say you warn him on that and then threaten to take off points? Thanks'
If can acknowledge that he geniunely won the fight fair and square they you guys can genuinely admit that he was hugging Margarito. Now yes I understand Margarito was HOLDING his hand but this is after Williams would come on to him and hug.
Understand this isn't an excuse/nore Am I trying to justify anything just a simple observation that Williams held excessively.
I really think Margarito will never again get back to where he was after this. He might continue to fight but I don't think he will make it back to the top ranked. Again it's no ones fault but hes, to add insult to himself he goes and with a straight face says he was robbed. That right is down right wrong, he should know better then that. Someone else here stated that eventho they didn't like Margarito and what not he could understand why Margarito felt he was robbed being that coming into the 12 round the fight was close. Still I personally think at best Margarito won 5 rounds and that's been kind to him.
Well then the Margarito Express ends here, I never claimed that Margarito was better then PBF. I never claimed that Margarito was invincible. However I did claim that he had been a champion for years, had paid his dues fighting whomever they put infront of him.
And he was overdue for a title shot. How do you earn a shot at THE Champ in the div? You can do it several ways. Beating another champ and trying to unify thats 1 way, Wining a title not loosing a fight in years and fighting whoever is there defending your title. He did just that and wanted a shot at Zab. I'll always think back on Zab vs. Baldomir and know that on that night it was suppose to be Margarito there fighting him and not Baldomir. If you've followed this saga you'll know. (Let's not forget Zab was just looking for an easy set up fight)
Heres hoping that the future fights in this Welterweight tourney can be as good as this one.
Re: My take on the fight.
It was a closer fight than the score cards even as PW did enough to win rounds. Margarito's atack just couldn't get through PW pteradactyl arm range to get to his rib cage. I don't think either fighter landed more than a few significant punches the entire time.
Re: My take on the fight.
:coolclick:
Cool click, El Gamo. You owned up to what you knew would be a barrage of anti-Margarito posts after the fight. Yet, you were honest and gave Williams his due. I too, thought Williams won the fight. But I don't entirely blame Margarito for claiming he was robbed. (He's wrong, but I don't blame him). He's not the first fighter to claim he was robbed, nor will he be the last. Margarito was coming on strong in the later rounds, but Williams never wilted, and actually won the last round, IMO.
Margarito gave it his all, but Williams is too tall, too busy, and would give any good WW fits. Now let's see how the division pans out.
You're gonna continue catching hell on the fight, but you're handling it in a classy manner. As for Margarito, he's not totally out of the picture, but he obviously got knocked down several notches in the WW pecking order.
Re: My take on the fight.
I was wrong on Williams, no doubt. I didn't think he was tough enough, I said that if he could take Margarito's best then he could outwork Margarito but I didn't think he'd hold up. Its funny, he looks like a guy who'd be chinny but he's not.
I do think Margarito could have fought a better fight and I'm not sure what he was doing in the twelth round, especially after having as good an 11th as he did. But I would still have to go with Williams in a rematch. His style is gonna give a lot of people trouble, although I think Cotto would match up well with him.
Re: My take on the fight.
One thing that I was tripping on was that Williams put 17 lbs on overnight! After weighing in at 145. The fight was pretty close, and you always had that feeling Margarito could end it, but Williams showed he has a decent chin and good evasion skills. Williams workrate won him the fight, he doubled Margaritos output.
Re: My take on the fight.
CC's back. Hey I don't mind, even guys that didn't like Tony before admit how tough he is and what might have been had he started earlier.Only an idiot would say he was bum or anything similar. PW is dangerous but his flaws are obvious. He is a threat to all WW but I also think he is beatable at the same time.
I don't know WTF Margarito was doing for rounds 1-5 and round 12. Fair enough,he was blocking alot of shots but he wasn't letting his hands go and that is what he is known for. I was very impressed by his defence, head movement but where was the jab? The first 6 rounds could have been like the Santos fight,he could have warmed up earlier, used the jab, laid into the body more. It was a silly tactic imo and clearly didn't work.
Without a shadow of a doubt, margarito has dropped in my WW rankings and all other rankings too. It's up to him to decide where he goes from here. He needs to stay active, beat some contenders and rematch Cintron/PW. If he mopes around like a bitch, complains and fights twice a year,it's over him.
What makes this sad is that he was one fight,a few rounds away from the big name status and the mega fight he has been craving for so many years. Boxing can be cruel :-\ :(
Re: My take on the fight.
I don't think anyone is surprised !!!
This guys was a star already. He destoryed Mitchell last year and Mitchell has been in with some handy fighters, beat N'Dou and is ex WBA champ.
This guy is a star. Could be one of the Top P4P. I think he will be another Winky though in the fact that no SOB will want to fight him.
