Great fighters who had a little bit of everything.
I am starting to notice a lot of the guys who didn't have the greatest speed, power, but they have enough of everything to be as good or considered better than the better athletes of their generation.
Hagler, Duran, Holyfield, Hopkins are all guys who could box, fight on the inside, counter punch, take a punch, use footwork, brawl, box. They also had underrated athletic abilities Holyfield and Hopkins both punch harder than they are given credit for and they are all faster than people seem to give them credit for, but one thing they all had in common except Duran was an amazing workout and always came in, in spectacular shape.
Can you name any other fights in this group?
Re: Great fighters who had a little bit of everything.
Miguel Cotto. Not the fastest guy, not the best chin, not the hardest hitter, not too sound technically, not the best defense, but he gets through with sheer determination.
Has beaten slick boxers, pressure fighters, power punchers and tricky lefties.
I think he has done well, and I expect to see him get even better.

floyd mayweather jr. doesnt seem to be lacking in any area

dont know about Duran being in spectacular shape , after reading his book it seems he always had such trouble making weight (though i dont think he ever failed cause he would almost kill himself doing it everytime ) that he was never really 100%

he excels so greatly in almost every area though, he doesn't have " a little bit of everything", he has a TONNE of speed and agility.

He lacks power to ko guys in his current division, and he has blinding speed which makes him an exceptional athlete.
Re: Great fighters who had a little bit of everything.
Re: Great fighters who had a little bit of everything.
Sugar Ray Robinson
Aaron Pryor
Marvin Hagler

???
ALL great fighters have a bit of everything, that is why they are great fighters.
It's very rare that a someone would be recognised as a great fighter who lacks any major boxing attribute ..... those that do seem to compensate by having an absolute surfeit of something (Rocky Marciano, Tommy Hearns come to mind, but I'm sure there are others)

Completely agree on this X...
No disrespect to Taeth, but as I read the title of the thread I said WTF?
Don't all great fighters have a little bit of everything, that's why they are great....
Sure enough I scroll down and read your post....

Robinson had amazing speed, and power... I am talking about guys who are Roy Jones Jr., Mayweather, Robinson, Leonard... I am talking about the guys who weren't blessed with gifts that set them so far apart, but purely technique and hardwork with decent athleticism.

I am talking about the versatile guys
You never really saw Frazier change it up or Ali become a power puncher who weaved in with both hands high. Almost all the champions were one dimensional
Sugar Ray boxed
Leonard could do both
Hearns had to keep an opponent on the outside or overwhelm them, but he was mainly a boxer.
There are some guys who were good at everything, and they didn't have all the talent in the world, and thats who I am looking for.
