Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
As I have just wasted a £365 a year gym membership (I went once in the whole year, the day I joined :-\) I decided rather than throw more money away on a gym membership I'd never go to, I'd be better off buying a decent piece of exercise kit hence I forked for a brand new Concept 2 Model E.
It actually cost almost as much as my car at £1115 but if it gets me fit then it will be worth every penny.
I'm not really massively overweight, I'm 5ft 7 and 11 1/2 stone but as around only 5% of my body is muscle I'm still looking a little lardy.
My aim is to lose 14 lbs of fat and build 14 lbs of muscle so my weight will stay the same but my composition will improve.
It's being delivered on Tuesday. Can't wait to get it, really looking forward to getting fit again!
Does anyone else have or use a Concept 2?
Re: Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
i use a concept 2 rower about twice a week, very good machine, never had any problems with it, you can tell its a quality machine as soon as you get on it with how smooth it is as opposed to the cheap nasty ones some gyms have

Yes I've used a model D I think in the gym I was a member of. What I especially like about having my own is that you can record all of your times onto the PM4 computer and then race against your best time, I imagine that will pretty cool.
Apparantly you can even race live online against other users, it's becoming a new craze and should be awesome fun racing against up to 7 other people live. I'll need to buy a laptop though to plug into it as I don't want to be lugging the rower into my bedroom every time I want to race someone :P
Re: Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
my mates dad had a concept 2 rower in his house and he had a massive map and used to pin point how far he had rowed every day on the map as if he was travelling around the world, looked pretty good on the wall

That's a really cool idea, although if my past record of quitting things continues I'll probably row a couple blocks from my house and then use it to hang laundry on :-\
Re: Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
Rowing is INTENSE. Don't know wha model it is but I love rowing. Problem is my gym has them in the mat room, where there is always a yoga class or something going on and no TV (and now that I'm without an iPod, that sucks) so I don't use it near as much as I should. Great workout those things are though.

That's a really neat idea. I bet that was fun.

LOL
Set it up in front of the tele and you'll be better motivated. Row through your favorite shows and take a break during commericals or something.
Re: Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
Well my rower arrived a couple days ago and I've completed my first workout. The rower itself is absolutely enormous, it's so big it blocks the doorway to my lounge and means I have to turn sideways and squeeze past the flywheel to get in and out. A full sized racing canoe would have probably took up less space :o
Anyways I need the fitness so I'll just have to live with that. I completed what is called O'Reilly's test where you row as fast as you can for 4 minutes and record your distance. How far you rowed is supposed to be a good indicator of you areobic capacity and level of fitness and I managed an amazing 843 meters in that time, which is roughly average.............for a 70-79 year old lightweight man :-X
Still I should have expected it what with my diseased lungs but I can't help feeling a bit gutted :'(
Anyways I'm not deterred, if I allow it to discourage me too much I won't end up using it so I've just got to be realistic and set achievable goals, and hopefully my time will improve to almost average levels for age after a few months.
Following in Sharla's example I may start a training log when I start properly as I try and motivate myself to lose a good 14 lbs of fat and pack on another 14 lbs of muscle.
I'm going to add cycling and weights, plus some walking and stretching, that will probably be all my body can handle.
I may even put some 'before' pictures up so you can all have a laugh at my expense and spur me on to trying to build a respectable body!
Re: Just ordered a Concept 2 Rower
Concept 2's are fantastic bits of kit mate, bit overkill for you i would say. No offence but a £69.99 argos jobby would have done you. Having said that if you've spent a grand on something you are more likely to use it than if you spent say 70 quid.
Good luck

yeah it certainly set me back a few quid. I'm planning to use it online though. You can buy software which allows you to hook it up to your pc and race on screen like an arcade game. You can even race other users live and I thought that level of community and interaction would help keep me motivated.
I did about 5000 meters the day after I got it, although not at all once and now I'm aching all over so I'll lay off it the rest of the weekend.
I can't wait to start using it properly though!

I think I can speak for everybody on the site when I say we ALL want those pictures :lickish:
As for my own before pics, I think I'll start with maybe 4 week training pics. My real before pics would provoke far too much laughter and ridicule I think :-\ :D
