90s Welterweight Champions didn't fight eachother.
Trinidad was champion from 1993 to 2000
Quartey was champion from 1994 to 1998
Whitaker was champion from 1993 to 1997
There is a period here of 4 years were these three guys were champions and made many defenses but did not fight eachother.
I was still young at the time and new to boxing, but I don't remember anyone clamoring for unification matches. Was everyone just too entharelled with Tyson to take notice?
Why did these fights never take place?
After looking at this I really give a lot of credit to DLH (a fighter I use to despise). He took the title in 97 from Whitaker and in 3 years had alrady attempted 2 unification fights. After that a new trend was started. No other WW title holder went more than 2 defenses without attempting to unify.
We have gotten so use to this now that we demand the ww champions to fight eachother despite the fact that not one of them has defended the title more than twice. Do we ask too much of our current champions? or is the way it should be from now on?
We are living in good times if you are a fan of the WWs. Lets see how long this trend continues.
Re: 90s Welterweight Champions didn't fight eachother.
I think that alot of fights not just the ww of the 90's are guilty of this. Some of my favorate fighters do this. My guess is that they want to give themselves every bit of the edge to win the fight against an elite fighter.

Yes the 3 champions all said they wanted to fight each other but never did. During the time Pernell was regarded the best because he was there the longest but Trinidad started to beat better fighters such as Oba Carr and Campus but no one was sure who was the best because they found reasons not to fight one another. Oscar had the courage to challenge them all and is one of the reasons why he has earned so much money and fame because he challenged them all, and comming from a lower weight too. Although Oscar never fought Tszyu he more than made up for it by fighting the top 3 welterweights at the time.
