90s vs 2000s WW Quarterfinals Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Ike Quartey
Quartey made short work of Judah on his last fight. His bazooka jab did all the work and Zab never got close. Now he hopes to do the same against another slick boxer in Mayweather. "He never fought someone strong like me. I will knock him out." Says Bazooka.
Mayweather weathered a late storm by McGirt but never allowed him to take control of the fight in which Floyd dominated. Now he faces a tough challenge in Quartey. "38 have tried, 38 have failed, I'm the best fighter pound 4 pound. Who has he beat other than Judah who I already beat" said Floyd just before the fight.
Re: 90s vs 2000s WW Quarterfinals Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Ike Quartey
"Quartey has no special effects," Mayweather says. "He's supposed to have a good jab, it's all right, but what else? I'mma treat him like sloppy seconds."
"He is a good champion," says Quartey. "I am a great champion. He has no knockouts at welterweight, I do. He beat De La Hoya... everyone knows I did it first. He will taste my jab all night."
Quartey loads up on the jabs but finds it difficult to keep up his frenetic pace as the Pretty One picks them off, countering with jabs to his shoulder and chest. Quartey looks puzzled momentarily in the 6th, not understanding why his arm is so tired and that's when the fireworks begin. Mayweather seemingly taunts him from the outside, carefully staying to Bazooka's left. Quartey hangs the turtle of a jab out and is countered by stiff rights. By the ninth his eye is closed. In between rounds they catch a glimps of each other. Mayweather smiles and winks at him. Quartey comes out, flurrying with lefts and rights, backing Mayweather into a corner. Floyd takes a body shot that he winces from, but he spins away and plays hide-and-seek for the rest of the round. Quartey's corner yells for him to do something and in the eleventh he catches Mayweather with a glancing blow that sends him back a few steps. Mayweather hangs on, though, peppering Quartey's left chest a few more times before the round ends. Quartey is exhausted, his corner is telling him he needs a KO. Badly. Mayweather's corner gives him pre-packaged advice. They've seen this in training and Roger knows Mayweather knows already what to do, but "Be careful," he says. "Don't get caught by no bull$#!+ @$$ lucky punch." Quartey rushes him, Mayweather evades. Quartey throws winging punches and Mayweather hesitates. The fight isn't as in the bag as Mayweather must be thinking, he'd better do something, what is he waiting for? And then all of a sudden, WHAM! Quartey is caught clean in his closed right eye from a counter punch he couldn't have gotten away from even if he'd seen it. It feels so good that Mayweather does it again and connects again. Quartey wisely retreats to reevaluate. Mayweather pursues, still defensive-minded in his Philly crabshell. Quartey's shoulder burns; he knows now he's been tricked. He tries a trick of his own and feints with the left and leaps in with a right. Mayweather parries and clips Quartey's ear with a baby left hook, sending him stumbling almost to the canvas. Quartey recovers and turns in time to find Mayweather there, scissoring his body with savage hooks from Quartey's offenseless side. He appears helpless in the closing seconds, only able to cover up as he is pinned against the ropes. Mayweather wins by UD, but one judge had him up by only one point. Mayweather cries, gives thanks to his Lord and Savior, all while holding one of his many, many children.

This is a very very tough fight for Floyd. I've said the type of guy who can give Floyd problems is a rangy fighter with a jab, and that's what Quartey is. I think Floyd does enough to win, but barely.
