too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
Hi everyone
I've been a boxing fan since i was a kid(36 now!)
I'm a bit of a gym fanatic and always try and keep myself in great shape with a combination of weights bag work sparring and cardio(aerobic and anaerobic)
My question is this....
Some people at this gym(generally the ones who hate doing any cardio!!!) tell me that too much cardio reduces muscle and strength...are they right?
'Cos to my mind all great boxers run at least 3 or 4 miles in the morning followed by shadow boxing, sparring weights etc bout 5 days a week and they usually look to be in amazing shape.
Any thoughts?
Jerry

Their great physical condition wasn't spontaneous they had to gradually work up to that point. A lot of fighters fit in either one of two categories, undertrained or overtrained. You need to do enough work to trigger the right adaptations that you want to take place. It's ironic that it's many of the conditioning coaches in boxing that cause a lot of fighters to be overtrained and not at their peak by the time of the fight. :D
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
Thanks for the reply
My only problem is i don't seem to get tired so i might well be guilty of overtraining cos i hate stopping!!!
I always find i wake up after bout 40 mins when others are getting tired!!
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
They are talking nonsense

mate your getting some bad advise.. you better do your road work if you want to succeed in this sport.
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
I think there is some truth to it. Focusing heavily on conditioning will diminish your strength potential. I believe in a sport like boxing, conditioning, specifically anaerobic conditioning is more important than strength. A lot of punching power is produced from proper technique rather than just raw explosive strength. You want both, but somebody focusing their training on power lifting and strength gains or strong man competitions will have noticeably more strength potential and lifting power than somebody who splits between power lifting routines, calisthenics, aerobic/anaerobic conditioning, sport specific boxing drills/technique, etc.
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
Very true, but the muscle wont have the industry . cc good post
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
It may reduce muscle mass, but not muscle strength.
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
You can do too much cardio but 3-4 miles of running 5 days a week, for a fit healthy person, isn't too much. The trade off between the likelihood of repetitive injury and cardiovascular gains is probably about right at that mileage and frequency. If you were to ramp it up to 8-10 miles 5 days a week obviously that balance would change. :)
Re: too much cardio work=loss of muscle??
6 of one half a dozen of the other
Truthfully your better off doing your cardio to warm up to lift, and to cool down after lifting
And this from someone who hates cardio, but when Im training,I do it anyway
