Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I don't see how anyone could think the ratings would be unbiased when the magazine is under GBP. Oscar says it won't be but his word is pretty much the only guarantee, which personally doesn't give me much confidence. I guess we'll just have to see, but what do you guys think?
ps. This topic has probably been discussed but I didn't see it... So sorry if this is redundant.
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
It has most definatly been compromised. I mean these people are being payed by GBP like you said. Its like if a certain fashion brand bought an independant fashion review mag. Its just a shitty situation, even if they are calling things right down the middle there will always be that healthy doubt. Its no longer the bible of boxing IMO
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
But some of that will be offset by all the hot lingerie Ads, as long as Oscar leaves the modeling to the ladies!!! ;D
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
Well almost certainly the criticism of Oscar, Shane B-Hop n Marco will disappear, criticism of Top Rank, King, Warren and virtually every other promoter may grow.
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
How much influence do the Ring ratings have?
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I see/ hear them sited fairly often... more than any other ranking I can think of.
Actually I was wondering something else too, what is this 'Ring belt' I've heard of? Is that just a term for being highest ranked by Ring in your weight class or p4p or what? Do they actually issue a belt?

Yes they issue a belt.
Their ratings probably most resemble the fans choice for top man per division..Manny Pac doesn't hold a "major" alphabet title but is rightly regarded top man at superfeather etc...
But at the end of the day their ratings don't mean shit.
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I think the magazine will go to the dogs now. With Oscar at the helm the back pages will all be full of classified ads for make up and party dresses, there will probably be a 'hottest boxer of the week' center page spread and no doubt sporadic appearances of Oscar himself in various poses
UGHH!! (Shivers)
:-X
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I think people worry to much. I just got the newest one, and it isn't full of biases towards GBP.
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I don't think Oscar would destroy the reputation of the bible of boxing.
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I think it has been tainted.
I even heard they were going to change the name of the magazine to...
The Drag Magazine
;D
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
Put it this way, this is my guess for November's Ring belt champs.
Heavyweight - Sultan Ibragimov
Cruiserweight - Vacant (GBP don't promote any)
Light Heavyweight - B-hop
Super Middleweight - Librado Andrade
Middleweight - Kassim Ouma
Super Welterweight - Oscar De La Hoya
Welterweight - Shane Mosley
Super Lightweight - Demetrius Hopkins
Lightweight - Joel Casamayor
Super Featherweight - Marco Antonio Barrera
Featherweight - Rocky Juarez
Super Bantam - Daniel Ponce De Leon
Bantamweight - Gerry Penalosa
Super Flyweight - Fernando Montiel
Flyweight - Hugo Cazares
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I think it all depends on how things are handled. If the editors and others who run the magazine are left in place and told to do their job as they have been, perhaps little will change.
As an example: Often when a car company gets bought, the purchasing company will leave the designers and engineers in place, so that the line can retain it's integrity, identity and individuality.
I think we really just have to wait and see...
Re: Has Ring Magazine been compromised?
I hope the integrity will stay in place. But it is funny who the founder of Ring magazine had as his initial ratings person. Tex Rickard. That's right originally Nat F. picked Jack Dempsey's promoter as the guy behind the first set of ratings, before eventually letting the writers and editors take over the ratings because of the obvious bias...Just food for thought.
