Guys, I really need to find a good school or trainer...

I've been thrown into sparring when I don't even have the basics down I'm afraid, like on the first day I tried boxing...ever. The communication isn't there, but I can't expect much if I am not paying (it is free) and the guy is just doing it for fun. I'm getting beat badly and developing bad habits like putting my head down and turtle mode when getting walloped, not to mention confidence.

I really need technique critique and eventual sparring once a week, I don't even know if this is the correct forum to be asking though. The nutritional aspects, strength and conditioning I can handle myself, it is mainly the technique that I lack and is most important.

I live near Joplin, Missouri, I have tried boxinggyms.com and haven't found what I am looking for, I am willing to travel up to 2 hour drive once a week. It is tough to find a gym that fits with my hours though, Friday evenings, most Sundays, and all Saturdays I am open. Any suggestions? I've tried the yellow pages as well.

What about Kansas City, Springfield, or Tulsa? Quite a trip, but if it is a last resort...if not I may have to find a different hobby. Basketball? :)

Thanks for the link, yeah boxinggyms.com does offer a nice search of the gyms. I emailed a few, just to get more info as most do not have a site for their gym. St. Louis has a lot of gyms! Damn! Too bad they're a little far away for me. :(

Ok,quick explanation about female boxing
Alot of gyms wont even train them,and most trainers would prefer to work with guys even if they do train them.
Im a special case,in that as long as your willing,and will give me all youve got Ill train you.
But even then,its specified,"I dont train female boxers,I train boxers,you expect something different because your a girl,well dont expect anything different"
But I can allmost garuntee you that if theyve got female boxers coming out of their gym,theyve probably got at least 10 times as many male fighters.
I know theres some coming out of Missouri Feur has a fight coming up next month,and a couple of the names being looked at are out of there

I guess it comes down to if I want to shell out the gas money and make the long trips then, I really want this bad but don't have a reliable car at the moment so we will see. Do most gyms allow free trials to see if the trainers or gym is a good fit for me?

Very few do,Id call ahead and ask what the gymn stresses,and if thats what you want

How far are you from AR?

I am from Huntsville, MO. next to moberly. I know that in Jeff City they have quite a few local boxers.......they hold an event called "ballroom boxing" where its kindof a cool thing to get to go to with local midwest talent there. I am sure there are soem gyms around.

i cant help you out mate but just stick to it and im sureyou'll improve and find a good gym. trial and error i guess
