Calzaghe Regrets Questionable Comebacks – Talks Legacy
By Mark Staniforth: Joe Calzaghe is adamant he will call time on his career when the time is right, after witnessing one of his boxing heroes fighting on past his prime in Moscow last weekend.
"I don’t want to end up like Holyfield. It is ridiculous he keeps coming back. I’m a massive Holyfield fan - and I just wish he’d retire.
"But I’m still a hungry fighter and I believe I can go on and achieve greater goals. I’m as quick as ever and I feel at my best at the moment. The way I feel I could fight on until I’m 40."

The last thing i want ois for Joe to prove himself, fight on a bit and lose due to age and have all his haters go "ya see! told ya he was nothing."
Re: Calzaghe Regrets Questionable Comebacks – Talks Legacy

I think Joe will be smart enough to know when its time to quit. I think that if he gets past Kessler on November 3, that will be it for him in the SMW's, or at the most one more fight. Then it'll be seeing who's available at light heavy, and hopefully a title shot there, so he can retire a two weight champion. Of course...if he loses fairly and squarely, I think he might call it a day.

Kessler reminds me a little bit of that character Ralph Fiennes played in the film Red Dragon with all that tattoo work! Hecame to a sticky end too.
Kessler is out of his depth with Calzaghe ;)
Re: Calzaghe Regrets Questionable Comebacks – Talks Legacy
If Kessler is over rated or not remains to be seen , 1 thing is for sure it will be a sad day if Calzaghe goes down having beaten Joe Louis's record of 25 defences :( well in my eyes it will.

I dont think it is even comparable...what with this age of multiple belts and seldom a unified champion in sight.

Exactly....it's like comparing winning Division 1 5 times in the 60s and winning the Premiership 5 times since 1998, now and then are two entirely different games, and shouldn't be stood up shoulder to shoulder. I'm not saying that Warren won't do it if Joe gets to 25 defences, but I hope he doesn't.

I'm a real Calzaghe fan, and also Welsh ...... but Louis defended an undisputed unified world title at a time when boxing attracted the best athletes. He cleaned out the division totally.

Never knew you were a welshy too :o couple of us here aint there!
If Joe was to go on to get 25 or more defenses i doubt anyone, even the biggest of calzaghe fans would conside rit the same as what Joe done... the truth is it wont happen, calzaghe said him self he would never fight past Joes record, and should he win agasint kessler the only way i see him staying at SMw would be to fight palik, otherwise its a move up, or whoop pavlik and then move up, 21, 22 at the most is what Joe will do.
Must be a welsh thing with Holyfield, both calzaghe and maccarinelli fucking love the guy

Almost every boxing fan worldwide loves Holyfield. He has that true warrior spirit, yet remains humble. I wish he would retire also. The history books will be kind to him for sure. He is a throwback to the golden age of boxing.
Re: Calzaghe Regrets Questionable Comebacks – Talks Legacy
While I have clearly stated that I think Joe will win & I wouldn't have any issues if Mikkel won...that'd be a lie.
I don't want to see Joe's career tarnished this late in the game. I'd love to see him win & then move up to light heavyweight & take on Jones jr., Hopkins, Tarver, or any of the other top bill names of 175lbs.
Kess has the abilities & capabilities to make the night hard for Joe...but I honestly believe that Joe's got that extra something that no other fighter has...his speed & the fact that he's multi-dimensional.
Either way...win, lose, or draw...it'll be a great fight & a great night for TRUE boxing fans.

Why ae 5 premiership wins and five division 1 wins in the 60's not comparable? Apart from the name change they are essentially exactly the same competition with approximately the same amount of teams in each and the same number of matches required to win. Also there can only be one champion in any year both in the 60's and right now so what's the difference?
Imo winning the league, FA Cup, European Cup etc is exactly the same level of achievement now as its always been ???
Re: Calzaghe Regrets Questionable Comebacks – Talks Legacy
Joe Loius was undoubtedly one of the all time greats no question. However his recod was well padded with no hopers probably even more than in calzaghe's case. The situation with Loius was so well known it had its own name The Bum of the Month Club.
This wasn't a case of Loius dodging anyone quite the contrary, he liked to fight regularly so even if a fighter was outside the top 20 or 30 they still might get a shot at Joe.
Cannon fodder but not Joe's fault.
