Matt Skelton to fight Alexander Dimitrenko for European Heavyweight Title

Matt Skelton is eyeing a crack at the European title after being nominated to fight Alexander Dimitrenko for the vacant belt.

Commonwealth champion Skelton, 40, has withdrawn from a proposed rubber fight with Danny Williams.

A win over Dimitrenko would open up new horizons for the Bedford brawler, who boxes over eight rounds at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, on November 3.

It will be a keep busy fight ahead of the proposed clash with Dimitrenko.

Skelton is currently 21-1 following his points win over Michael Sprott in July.

Dimitrenko, a 25-year-old Ukrainian based in Germany, is 26-0 (16) and has beaten a series of fringe contenders.

Personally, this is about as good as it could have possibly been for Skelton, after his coma-inducing performance against Sprott a few months ago, which I believe, but is yet to be confirmed by my doctor, has in fact infected me with a life-destroying case of narcolepsy, in that I cannot look at a British boxing fight without immediately falling asleep. Whether Skelton wins or loses, hopefully there is some vestige of entertainment in it.

I like Matt Skelton, he is what he is, makes no pretence about being anything more and turns up in shape for every fight. His laast fight was rather uninspired but I put the blame entirely upon Michael Sprott. It was his job to take the title from Skelton and instead he fought like a cowardly bitch.

Skelton did what he needed to do and won the fight with ease, although I'm still bitter about the blind judge who scored it a draw and cost me 8 points in the prediction contest >:mad

According to boxrec, not only is Skelton the 9th best heavyweight in the world, his last opponent Michael Sprott is also in the top 20. I see your "sad", and raise you an "utterly depressing".

I agree it's pathetic, but we did have the last undisputed champion, add to that the fact he was born in Canada, I think that tells you how bad your guys are doing too. Let's face it, the real Heavyweights these days are in the NFL or the NBA.

As inconsistent and bad as Hasim Rahman, John Ruiz, Calvin Brock and James Toney are. I would still rather take them over the pitiful bunch of Matt Skelton, Danny Williams, Michael Sprott and Audley Harrison. Seriously, does the UK even have any heavyweight prospects that are any good?

The trouble is though VD that our little country hasn't yet reached the obesity pandemic that your good old US of A has. It's clearly going to be more likely that the USA will produce a much large percentage of decent heavyweights.

Not only do you have a much larger population than us, at least 50 % of all your adult men weigh over 200 lbs.

That's one giant, fat and greasy pool you've got to pick from.

For the record Lewis was born in East London, England then moved to Canada when he was about 11 years old.
