WBA applauds WBC decision!
WBC will also implement half-point scoring

The World Boxing Association (WBA) wants to express its happiness after learning that the World Boxing Council (WBC) will support WBA’s initiative to implement the use of the half point system to score boxing fights. After several analysis and studies carried by its judges and supervisors during its annual convention, held October 7-12 in Chengdu, China, the WBA decided in favor of using the half point system in its regional title fights.
Therefore, the WBA became the first international boxing sanctioning body to use a new scoring system that may revolutionize boxing by giving judges an extra tool that will help avoiding draws and unfair results.
“There are certain great benefits of this system if you compare it with others, as it is revealed from the analysis we have performed here at our workshops,” President Gilberto Mendoza explained.
“The half point is an extra tool given to judges to have a better way to decide on close rounds and to differentiate a round won by a close margin from a round barely won. At the end of the day, the final score would reflex more accurately what had happened in the fight,” WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza said.
Almost two weeks after the WBA’s convention in China, WBC President Jose Sulaiman announced yesterday that the WBC will follow WBA’s steps and will support the use of the half point system as well. “We were delighted to learn that the WBC will support WBA’s decision to explore the use of this scoring system that gives judges more freedom and flexibility to score, as they have expressed,” Mendoza Jr. added.
“It’s true, the WBA was the first to implement this new scoring system. But it’s not a matter of who invented something but how we all work together in favor of boxing. We welcome the support we are receiving from a sister body like the WBC,” Mendoza concluded.

Its a load of old pony. if the judges were honest or competent we wouldnt need these so called new scoring systems.

What is wrong with the current scoring system?
It pisses me off that they're brought in open scoring in some fights. It sucks balls.
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
Let's do away with scoring altogether and let em fight til one guy can't get up!!
...ok, just kidding - mostly. Scoring a boxing match is a tricky proposition at best. There are so many intangibles going on in a match that it makes it nearly impossible to quantify what's really going on. Then there's the problem of weighting these factors - what is more important, landing harder shots and being aggressive or landing cleaner shots and being defensive? The criteria for judging a fight is so subjective to opinion that the system in place is almost a joke.
The problem is, what could be done to improve it? This idea of half-points does very little to address the actual problem with scoring - subjectivity. We need more rigorous definitions in place before we can even begin to fix the problem.
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
Hey, I for one am willing to give it a shot. I mean we all get worked up when we feel the scoring is ridiculous or there is a draw etc... if this system works, why the hell not ??? whats the worst that can happen. Its no worse than what is going on now
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
I am going to vote "No." That doesn't mean that I think the old scoring system was confusing.
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
i think aslong as their is a solid scoring system that is out for the publics awareness, then nobody can ever complain about the scorecards. I don't think we ever had a real, legit ONE and ONLY ONE scoring system. We should have a solid firm scoring system so we know the factors of how to judge a fight. Line up the policy and write them on cement.
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
Exactly how will these "half points" be awarded? I see the situation becoming more muddied instead of clear. There will be longer waits to tally up scorecards and more chance to add them wrongly. Judge A already gives a point to fighter 1 whereas Judge B gives a point to fighter 2. What's truly changed to prevent them from doing the same with half points?

I do like this part and I think it is good that they are adressing this problem. I for one am open to the idea. Let them test it out on the minor fights for a while and see what happends.
Oh yeah, open scoring is probobly one of the worst ideas in boxing history.... This one is not so bad though.
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
You can have a new system with the same morons and nothing will change. I agree with someone above if the judges did thier job correctly there would be no need.

Personaly i would liek to see how this works out. For some time i have felt maybe it would be worth while testing half round scoring. How many old pros have we seen do fuck all untill the last 60 seconds and win the round? hopkins done it for years and barrera done it at the end of his reign to.
If this can solve problems like that then why not?
How many times on here have you seen respected poster talk about a fight and who won only to back track the enxt day after watchign things more closley... judges dont have tv reply really to score on, and we all know a slow round, even tho a guy could press it but not get much luck wil lose the round of an old pro turns it on and does 60 seconds work, this could stop that shit, force boxers to box 3 minutes.
If it aint broke, don't fix it right? will it is broke right now, so if this is a test period, fuck it let them test.

CC....you took the words right out of my mouth
Re: WBA & WBC using new scoring system...do you agree?
I really don't see the whole point in it...no pun intended guys...WTF half point? will scoring with a half point really change the out come? either you win the round or you don't....points are scored for clean effective punching, volume, who presses the action...who manages to control the round ect....Knockdown makes it an automatic 10-8 rd unless the knockdown is the only effective thing that fighter managed to do that rd then it is a 9-8 rd ect i wont get into the whole thing because it really can be confusing but fact still remains half points are of no improvement IMO....
It is just one organization trying to make themselves different from the others and another not allowing it to happen
