Beginner sparring a southpaw
Would it be of any benefit for a novice like myself (just under 3months of training) to spar with a southpaw novice also. Hes had two fights, one one lost one, but has been training for well over a year. In other words he still raw as such but much more experienced than me? He's middle im welter but he doesn't usually rip into partners to be fair.
The reason I make a concerted effort to spar each time I go to the gym (3 times a week) I don't just spar for the sake of sparring, its always with an improvment/goal/technique in mind be it offensive defensive or both and Im thinking perhaps trying to learn the both is too much?
Re: Beginner sparring a southpaw
Can't hurt. What do you know about fighting a southpaw? Anything you learn will be more than you knew before. I'm certain you've read a million words on these pages about how to fight southpaws;test them out and find out for yourself. They are far more numerous these days and there is no teacher like experience.

Hey Greys thanks for the reply. I know the basics are you keep your left foor outside of his right foot, move to your left generally and fire straight rights and left hooks...is that a decent start?
Re: Beginner sparring a southpaw
Absolutley!
Southpaws are an obstacle that every boxer must overcome at some stage. It is beneficial in my opinion to start early and solve the equation early too if possible.
I find that a balance is needed against Southpaws. You must not be overly aggresive as the stance will exploit your missed punches and allow instant retaliation. However, you must not be too subdued either as you will be picked off with the southpaw jab.
Although the straight right is the most famed tool to be used against a Southpaw, your jab must not be underestimated. He will use his jab to find range and frustrate your guard. He will be unable to do this if you do so first. Tease with your jab, show it double and variate. When you become confident of your range you may then attempt lead rights and the right uppercut.
Good Luck
