ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
According to GBP CEO Rich Schaffer these are ODLH top three choices for May 3rd:
1. Ricky Hatton
2. Floyd Mayweather
3. Miguel Cotto
1. I'm really starting to get tired of ODLH. Lord knows that while Ricky is still a world class fighter, Floyd showed that Ricky is a little out of his depth at 147. Floyd hadn't knocked anybody out since Sharmba Mitchell on a body shot, and he starched Hatton. WHY IN THE F*** does Oscar want that fight? It'd be different if he just comes out and says Hatton-De La Hoya is a big money fight, but he's calling Hatton a "warrior" and saying the fight would be a "clash of the titans." Are you F****** kidding me? Oscar is 5'11" and Hatton is 5'6". Leave Hatton alone and let the young guy rebound and stop trying to tease with big money fights. There's a difference between heavy promotion and just plain deception.
2. THE PUBLIC HONESTLY DOESN'T WANT TO SEE THE WORLD AWAITS 2!!! Stop trying to push the fight on the fans. The first fight really wasn't close at all and the second fight wouldn't be any different unless ODLH came down to 147 because if he did, he'd be so weight drained Floyd would probably stop him on body shots. ODLH tried the first time, he brought Floyd (who's a small welterweight) all the way up to 154, he got the smallest possible ring, he made Floyd wear the Reyes gloves, and he still got beaten. Floyd clearly said that after the Hatton fight that he's physically and mentally tired of boxing and NOW you want to fight him? BTW, the Floyd rematch would probably only do 1.5 Mil and Floyd is gonna demand parity so good luck with that.
3. You're saying that you want to fight at 147, then come down and fight Cotto. Cotto isn't a big welterweight either but I'd say he's more natural at the weight than Mayweather. Cotto's Puerto Rican, you're Mexican, it'd be great TV. Cotto just beat Shane Mosley and while the PPV wasn't that great, with 24/7 and the right promotion, the fight could do around 1 Mil and Cotto would probably only need 30% to be satisfied. Make the fight happen. One question: why isn't this your first choice?

Great post albsur. Agree with all your points.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
Oscar isn't good for boxing when it comes to actually being in the ring. He lost to Mayweather, he shouldn't be in there with Mayweather OR Cotto. Hatton sure, but if that isn't a mismatch then I don't know what is. Let him go back to Light Welter where he belongs. If Oscar is really serious then he should jockey to fight someone in the top ten at junior middle and then try to get his mits on Forrest or Spinks. If he'd won his last fight and fought more actively and beaten a quality opponent instead of MAYORGA I'd be fine with him sitting back and picking the fights for the biggest paydays, but he lost and he shouldn't be handpicking his opponents like he is. That's something that WINNERS should get to do.

Dude, you just TOLD us why it isn't his first choice with your analyzing.
It's his highest risk to take punishment.
Hatton is too small and doesn't hit hard for someone DLH's size (good money fight)
Mayweather doesn't hit hard, and even though he'll beat Oscar, he won't take much punishment. (great money fight)
Cotto hits the hardest, drills the body, and will try to win by pressuring and throwing punches unlike Floyd. (good money fight, but probably the lowest of the three because of Cotto's not so popular status yet).
That is why Cotto is #3.. wouldn't he be your last option if you were him?
Even though the Cotto fight makes more sense to us, and it's what us as fight fans want.. I think that even though there would be a considerable drop in PPV's if he fought PBF again, I think there would still be plenty purchased to do BIG money. Even though he got beaten pretty soundly, it was still a SD, and there were people even in the room i was in that were saying that Oscar would win in a rematch. (not that that person has any boxing credibility, but he can represent the general public)..
-Do I think Oscar could beat Mayweather?
No, I do not..
-Do i think Oscar and GBP could market "The World Awaits 2" and make everyone believe that he will win this time?
YES, i do.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
Oscar does'nt even deserve a straight shot at these guys really
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
Oscars really steeped low this time.
I mean making himself hit 147 now is absurd and complete bullshit.
Talk about making a fight happen just for money.
I like the guy and he's def. one of my fav. fighters but this is sad to see.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised?
The Cotto fight is the only one I want to see, it'll get the casual boxing fan asking for the real fight of PBF Cotto if Cotto wins.
It would also show how much Oscar really has left, but it'd have to be 147 to make any sense at all. IMO it's decent logical fight for Cotto as I don't see him fighting Paul Williams anytime soon, though I'd love to See him fight Margarito, it wouldn't be as much of a statement as Oscar.
I'd actually give De La Hoya a decent shot against him, and with Cotto coming forward it'll make for a decent fight. The other two options I definitely do not want to see
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
As much as I want Mayweather to loose, I just can't see Cotto causing Mayweather problems. Mayweather's speed will own Cotto. I can see another Baldomir scene if Cotto gets in the ring with Mayweather.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
I said it before the Hatton Mayweather fight and I'm going to stick to it. He'll fight Hatton, he might even go to England. And he'll make it sell. The only real question is will Hatton accept.
More than anything, DLH wants to win his next fight. If he looses twice in a row it will be hard to sell his next fight. And he already said he wants to fight two more times. So he's going to pick the easiest possible opponent that is still recognizable by the fans.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
He needs to leave all three of these guys alone....sucks that the casual fan will jump all over any of these three bouts though. Oscar and sergio mora are gods in that world.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised?
Ahh come on guys give him a break. His fight against Floyd WAS close that's why it was a F****** split decision. Oscar lost the fight because he abandoned the jab he was doing great up until the last third of the fight.
He's still very much in the mix and I think he'll give ANYBODY a tough fight. I don;t want to see the Hatton fight as it's a misatch imo and if he wants another shot at Floyd he'll have to earn it but Oscar and Cotto would be a fantastic matchup for 2008.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
You guys are right Cotto should be #1 choice.

This is why ODLH owns a promotional company, and you do not. This fight overseas could quite possibly be the biggest draw in boxing of all time generating more in ticket sales combined with PPV buys than PBF vs ODLH. ( i did not say just in ppv buys alone ) The people of the UK want hatton to fight there, they will do anything to see him, nevermind the fact that its against ODLH. $$ would be Unreal

1 sentence. SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.

He also said he retired after ODLH

$$$ ODLH is not just thinking about purses in these fights, he's thinking of the overall promotion of these fights which one of these 3 fights would generate the most $$$$.
And IMO those 3 fights you have up there is the exact order I feel would generate the biggest moolah for ODLH and Co.
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
I would like to see Cotto/De La Hoya.
I wont mention the other guys, no need.
Truth is, I want to see Oscar get sparked by Cotto. Not to mention it would be a nice pay day for Cotto. If Oscar steps in with Cotto, it will be said that an Old Oscar De La Hoya still has more balls than a younger PBF. Show him up Oscar!
Re: ODLH's top three choices for May 3 according to GBP (are you even surprised???)
Who Oscar SHOULD fight:
1. Miguel Cotto - he BEAT Shane Mosley....he's the toughest guy at 147 (prove me wrong)
2. Paul Williams - If Oscar is still on top of his game (which he isn't, but he's still good) this would prove to be a hellacious fight. Williams can take a shot and he throws a hundred punches a round and he's friggin big!
3. Antonio Margarito - We've all heard the stories of sparring or how ODH doesn't want to fight Toni....well it would be a fun fight to see and we would get a good honest view of how good Toni can be.
4. Cory Spinks - he's the #1 Jr. Middleweight and Oscar is comfortable fighting at 154 he's speedy, he's slick, and he's got a new lease on his career. It would be a very interesting fight featuring contrasting styles it could be like Leonard-Duran or Whittaker-Chavez
5. Vernon Forrest - he's a good Jr. Middleweight and he's tough he has a hell of a punch was the first guy to whip Shane Mosley's ass and like Cory Spinks he has a new lease on his career. This could be a great matchup.
And finally
6. Shane Mosley - what fight would be a better swan song for both fighters (providing Shane is ready to retire as well) I could watch those guys fight 50 times! Though this would be hella hard to sell, however being a smart promoter he could put together a card on ESPN (regular ESPN) and bring boxing back to the mainstream....but that's just my mind working I know that's impossible but it's the kind of risk that needs to be taken to bring boxing back to life
