SecondsOut Fight of the year: Katsidis Vs Earl
By Craig Phillips: 2007 will be remembered as the year of some great match ups, possibly the best of the Millennium.
But which fight was voted the best of the year, by you the readers of SecondsOut?
On February 17, at the famous Wembley Arena in London unheralded Australian fighter; Michael Katsidis, faced England’s Graham Earl in a match up for the interim WBO Lightweight title.
On paper Earl was favoured to fulfil a life long ambition and become World champion against decent opposition, and then move on to bigger and better things.
But what we saw can only be described as five of the most thrilling and action packed rounds of boxing seen in 2007.
Having watched Earl for most of his career, it was always felt he was a slow starter and that rang true when a Katsidis right hand sent Earl crashing to the canvas in the opening session.
Earl rose at the count of three but looked on shaky legs, and was grateful for the knockdown coming so late on in the round. Following the mandatory eight count the bell rang and Earl had a full minute to regain his composure.

I can totally see why they, as a British based boxing website would have chosen this one as FOTY. Two guys completely ignoring defence and going all-out to beat seven shades of s**t out of each other. And it was one of the most entertaining fights put up for a share of the world title in recent times, at any division.
It had knockdowns, it swung back and forth, and it even had a towel being thrown in, and the ref throwing it back out again!

Def my best fight of the year,soon as it finished i knew that it couldn't be matched :)
Superb action and i swear by the look on Earls face Khan took his mind right back to that night when he bashed him up the other week.

Aside from the one knock down Earl scored this was a one-sided fight. No way it was the fight of the year.

Gunna have to disagree with you guys on this one. Although Earl had a horrible start to the fight, I thought he came back into it for a half a round or so before Katsidis brought himself back to the show and finished it.

I'm going to reserve judgement on that one. He got caught cold by Amir Khan, and was totally swamped in a short amount of time, when he was really thinking that it would be a slow start to the fight. If he never fights again, then I'll probably accept that it did finish Earl, but I'll give him another 12 months to see whether he'll come back again.
