Re: What makes a good chin?
Good thread :)
I think it's just down to each individual really. But poor conditioning makes you weaker in just about every department such as taking a punch so I would put that second. Not sure how the neck plays a part but it served Tyson ok to have a tree trunk for one. I think mental toughness plays a part also, you have to go into a fight thinking you are indestructable.
Floyds KO over Hatton was just perfect, you cant train to avoid punches like that. Ricky head butted the ring post because he was trying to grab Floyd, but Floyd had already gone once that shot landed. Ricky has taken much harder shots that he 'expected' to get hit with. A perfect punch seems to always do the job when you dont see it coming.
Re: What makes a good chin?
A good beard otherwise chins are boring LOL ;D
Re: What makes a good chin?
Anticipating the punch is probably the biggest factor.
Re: What makes a good chin?
Getting punched alot in the face by your parents when you're young helps develop a great chin. It helped me take a longer, more sustained beating from kids my own age for sure ;)

Hmmmm, I always got hit in the body. No wonder I have a shit chin and are immune to body blows :P
Re: What makes a good chin?
.....a good defense or rolling with the punches can't hurt....and more importantly knowing what to do when you ARE hurt helps out
Re: What makes a good chin?
They actually did a study on this and they found that fighters with square jaw lines and thicker necks seem to have the best chins...
The neck has a lot to do with it...the fighter is able to absorb the shot better when caught on the chin..
Conditioning has nothing to do with it..there have been plkenty of guys that are greatly conditioned that have suspect chins...
Of couurse none of the above can help with a shot to the temple or behind the ear

Yeah because thats the way they are mate.
Re: What makes a good chin?
....conditioning may help with the absorbtion of accumulative punishment but not with one big punch

Yeah, the unseen shot is always the better chance of a ko shot.

I don't; that picture of Hatton looking like a spokesman for the United Way is distracting ;D
