Provide Your Choices Here
If you had the power to turn back the clock or ressurect any 5 Deceased, old age, current faded or fighters that had circumstances derail their career. Who would you choose and why. I was originally going to say pick one fighter, but most have trouble picking one since we have so many past favorites
Remember it can be any 5 you favor alive, dead, or out of prime to put in this era and see how they fare with current nutrition, supplements and innovative training and state of the art equipment or just maybe their circumstances didnt befall them and see how they match up to todays current stars and if they can prevail. Mine are as followed
1) Gerald "G-Man' McClellan. Aside from Mike Tyson, the most angry, destructive and relentless fury I have ever seen step into the ring. G-man had it all, Speed, Helacious Power, good shot selection, solid chin with a warriors spirit. There is not a current fighter between 160-175 that could handle McClellan. Not Pavlik, Taylor, Calzaghe, Kessler, Hopkins, Tarver, Jones. Geralds career was cutshort buy tragedy and unfortunate circumstance I dont want this to be a Benn-McClellan discussion but we know both sides of the argument
2)George Foreman, Foreman to me was 1 of the top 5 Heavies of alltime, of course I would love to combine the youth and anger with the craft and guile of 40 yr old Foreman. If George was in his prime today he would undoubtedly mow thru this division and go undefeated along the way crushing Klit, Imbragimov, Chagaev on the way to unifying all major titles. Not to mention it would be fun to watch George bulldoze and lay to waste these heavies like nuclear fallout destruction
3)Sugar Ray Leonard. It would be fun to see Ray compete with the Cotto, Mosely, Margarito, Williams and Floyd. I think Mayweather having a fighter and a nemesis on the level of Leonard would legitimize his standing in History as one of the best ever.
4) Tommy Hearns- Hearns was a beast and would matchup well against Cintron, Margarito and Williams
5) Pernell Whitaker- Imagine Whitaker, Mayweather and Leonard battling it out to see who was the divisions best :o
I chose the last 2 as well because I think if you add Hearns, Leonard and Whitaker to this crop of Welter I think it would surpass the historical signifigance of any prestige the Heavyweight division has ever had and those matchups would be mind blowing.
That is my list I didnt want to be mundane so I left out Tyson, Robinson and Ali but obviously those guys are tops
Re: Provide Your Choices Here
Re: Provide Your Choices Here
What a list - how am I supposed to only pick one? ;D
I'd leave out Pernell Whitaker and ressurect the rest.
George Foreman - He would walk straight through the current Heavyweight division - anyone who thinks Wladimir Klitschko could stand-upto him needs their head testing.
Thomas Hearns - That would be frightening! His right hand landing on Cotto's chin would be Goodnight Cotto. Hearns had the reach and Cotto doesn't know how to get out of the way.
Sugar Ray Leonard - To see him at Welterweight making an absolute mug of Floyd Mayweather. Leonard had greater speed, agility and power. Also when Leonard had someone hurt he was one nasty Mofo.
Gerald McClellan - Him and Kelly Pavlik would be some fight. :o
Re: Provide Your Choices Here
It's hard to try and pick just 5 good thing you didn't put choose 1. ;D
1. Ike Ibeabuchi - Can you imagine him facing Lennox, Evander, Vitali and Wladimir :o jaw dropping. The type of battle he would have with them I could only imagine. Sadly that his career is over shadowed by his life outside the ring.
2. Carlos Monzon - Monzon vs. Pavlik anyone? Wow! :o P4P one of the hardest punchers all time facing off against Pavlik, AA, Winky or Castillejo.
'La Escopeta' vs. 'The Ghost' would be an instant classic.....
3. Ricardo Lopez - Would to settle once and for all a comment I read on the net (Not here) of who's better he or Calderon. Can you imagine
Lopez vs. Solis, Sosa, Cazares or Oleydong. All skilled guys who have shown loads of skill and lot's of heart. The battle of the little guys.
4. Bob Foster - AAHHHHHHH!!!! This dude would tare some ass up in any era. Line them up one by one, RJJ, Woods, Johnson, Hopkins, Dawson.
This guy would kick some ass. I'm not saying he's invincible but I'd favor him over all of them.
5. Alexis Arguello - Arguello vs. JMM anyone? Shit! that would be great. 2 of the most skilled fighters from their times facing off. :o Arguello vs. Pac, MAB, Erik, Guzman even Linares as the kids shown hes very skilled.
Re: Provide Your Choices Here
Thanks Mick for adding Foster in, as he is one of my all time faves, and would blow holes through guys these days.
Jerry Quarry, as I could see him take out the division today as well, and had a heart as big as any.
Mike Quarry; so I could watch Bob Foster send him into the 18th dimension again
Jimmy Wilde; wow what an amazing little pocket rocket. I'd put a leather collar on him and let him come into the ring on a leash like a little pit bull ;)
Salvado Sanchez; nuff said.

Alright Mick,
Looks like I didn't read JT's question properly. ;D
Great post, Mick and just asking if you could sum-up the fighter that was Monzon -even though I'm a downloader, I shamefully have seen only one of his fights and he looked slow. Don't ask which fight as it is in an external hard-drive somewhere.
Anyway, I've read alot of your posts and you always seem balanced and know what your talking about so just wondering your overall thoughts on Monzon?
(CC+ to you, Legion and JT)

Patient and practical with hins punches. He didn't have blazing speed but I wouldn't consider him slow. Footwork was IMO superb he could cut off a ring well he did this to Moyer, Bogs and Mundine. Once he cut them off it was good night for them. His right hand was devastating as seen in most of it not all of his KO's. His nickname 'La Escopeta' translates to 'The Shotgun' labeled as that after his right hand. He could also go the distance that's where the patient part came in. He wasn't KO hungry and he waited for the right moment. If the KO came, it came if it didn't he could go the distance 15 rounds tho maybe not well prepared all the time as far as training he was one of those rare specimens that some how was always in great shape and his stamina was amazing. He also had a great left hook which is the punch that set up the KO win over Munidne or Licata one of the two. But his left hook can also be seen when he fought the Great 'Matequilla' Napoles. Monzons always slated and downgraded as not beeing fast or skilled he might not have been the fastest but you needed fast hands to hit Briscoe, Napoles and Valdez. Life outside the ring somewhat stained his career inside it but IMO he is far more known for his career as the great 'Escopeta' rather then Monzon in his personal life. A womenizer, short tempered had ugly fights with his wife she "accidently" shot him. He then was convicted of shooting and killing his wife. Monzon tragically like many boxers died in a car accident. Sad ending to a great career IMO....
Thanks for the comments Welsh...

1 I think Pavlik is great, but I think McClellan would knock him out quick.
2 George would be undefeated and knock out everyone current opponent in his path.
3 Leonard would be too tough a nut to crack for any current welterweight, and I repect the current crop very much.
4 Tommy would be another one. He could own from welterweight to Middleweight right now if he was resurrected back right now and in his prime.
5 Whitaker would have been a great fight for Mayweather, Cotto and Margarito. I think Williams would have been too big for him though.
