Has this ever happened before? It could happen in 2008....
It's rare for two fighters to face each other when they are BOTH near the top of the PFP rankings. It usually only happens a couple times a year, if that.
For example, last year I'd say that Floyd-Hatton, Hopkins-Wright, and Marquez-Vasquez were the only fights that featured two fighters who were both Top 10 PFP at the time. Calzaghe-Kessler came close, but Kessler wasn't a consensus Top 10 PFP guy, he was more like Top 15. Barrera-Marquez was the same thing. Barrera was highly regarded, but he wasn't a unanimous Top 10 guy.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2008, my current PFP list looks like this:
1. Mayweather
2. Pacquiao
3. JM Marquez
4. Calzaghe
5a. Hopkins
5b. Cotto
Those are my clear Top 6. Some people would put Calzaghe higher, and that's fine. But those are my Top 6. Now, we already know Pacquiao-Marquez will be fighting in March. Calzaghe-Hopkins will likely happen in April. And I'd say there's at least a 50% chance that we see Mayweather-Cotto before the end of '08.
If those 3 fights happen, that would mean that the top 6 PFP fighters all squared off against another Top 6 fighter in '08.
To stretch it out even further, one could argue that #7 and #8 PFP are Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez (Winky has a legit claim to be #7 or #8 as well). Vazquez-Marquez III is already set for March. So if you buy the theory that Vazquez and Marquez are #7-8, then that means the Top 8 PFP fighters could all face each other in '08.
I can't think of any other year where this has happened, and it could happen in 2008.

An all out action fighter Wright will never be that is certain....For a fight full of toe to toe action Wright is not your man....BUT!!!! That does not take away from his skill in the ring over the years....He is one of the best Defensive fighters to ever grace the sport......Don't mistake excitement with ability...if that were the case Arturo Gatti would be and all time top 5 P4P...
Re: Has this ever happened before? It could happen in 2008....
Can someone correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 1st P4P list composed in the late 80's?
How can one check the P4P fighters of the 70's & 80's?
Thanks in advanced.

Are you serious bro? The first lists were compiled in the 80's?! How comes I hear that SRR invented the term P4P? I thought lists were a natural thing since then.

Ditto El Gamo thats exactly what i thought as well.
And by the way CutMeMick i didn't look where fighters were rated in 70s, 80s etc, I was trying to think which fighters fought who, how many title defense's they made etc. I was trying to guess where they would of been rated and to my knowledge and i don't think 6 fighters who were in top 10 P4P have ever fought each other in 1 year.

Right, the "term" P4P was BUT actual list I think it started being done in the 80's. I could be wrong here... But I've NEVER seen a P4P list from the 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s.

I heard the term before like Mick stated but as an actual list that was in print or used on broadcast like today I don't think it was around before the late 70'0s or 80's either....
IMO in the 40's etc there were sooo many guys fighting that were good and the fact there was only 1 world title in each division added with the fact guys fought under assumed names it was practically impossible to make one
