Tito Got Away With A LOT Of Low Blows
Just rewatched Jones-Trinidad and Tito threw a lot of low blows. Some were borederline but many of them were foul punches. I was very surprised that Arthur Mercante Jr. didnt didnt take a point and he barely even warned him. At one point he threw a left and a right low which envoked Roys taunting and he even looked a Mercante and waved him in, but he did nothing. Anyone else notice this? It was going on throughout the whole fight, pretty bad refereeing imo. Credit to Roy though cause at one point when he was hit low Mercante did step in and Roy could have taken 5 minutes but he didnt take any time at all.

Thanks brother, I was surprised there was no real mention or outrage on this already. If Tito won then there might have been, but win or lose aint the issue. Its the fairness both fighters should be given according to the rules.
Re: Tito Got Away With A LOT Of Low Blows
True,
I felt that Tito was indeed shooting for the leg and hip rather than the groin, in order to impede movement, but indeed they were intentional foul.
Re: Tito Got Away With A LOT Of Low Blows
It's all he could hit really. He only got called on one of them... ::**
Re: Tito Got Away With A LOT Of Low Blows
I would have to see the fight again to be sure but right now I disagree.
There were some low blows but they were mostly borderline punches and to say they were intentional fouls is really pushing it. Tito did what he had to do which was go to the body often. Unfortunately it was'nt enough.
Since I do not have the benefit of watching the replay as you do I will say this. I use to be pitcher for a local baseball team hear and I learned something that helped me become pretty good. It is not the home plate that determines the strike zone, it is the umpire. So the first thing I did was find out where the umpire's strike zone was. I would throuw the fast ball on the outside corner and keep moving it inch by inch further outside untill the umpire called it a ball. I found I could go as far as half a foot outside in some cases.
My point is, if the ref doesn't call it, it aint the fighters fault and he would be stupid not to take every advantage he can.

I agree, and I dint think all of them were intentional, but some of them were because he was landing low and would immediately do the same thing over. But as you said, the referee is really to blame for not doing his part. That is my problem not so much Tito, the ref didnt maintain control of the fight like he should have. I actually thought Tito fought a pretty smart fight, I didnt like the low blows as a tactic though.
Re: Tito Got Away With A LOT Of Low Blows
Roy has a wierdly long torso..
And he had his trunks up high.. There were some going low but when you wear your shorts like that then its hard to tell when you have to ref the fight..
And anyway.. Yes they were hip shots and some looked pretty painful but its not in the same league as hitting a guy right on the cup so.. i let it go
