Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
http://www.fightnews.com/fightnews_2...ZbtLYMdWV.html
Catchweight at 150 pounds (!). Forbes have fought at that weight before though, as it was the weight limit for participants in Season Two of The Contender.
Giving it a bit of thought, I actually don't mind this. Sure, it is a meaningless fight, made only to make ODLH look good. But if, as many here claim, DLH is meaningless anyway, it should be only good that he doesnt confuse 'the title picture', right? Let the real McCoys fight each other and all that.
Also, if this indeed mean 'free HBO', as in 'people who do not subscribe to HBO can watch it anyway', then this will get a hell of a lot more viewers than any other recent boxing fight. And that promotion should be good for the sport, right? And finally, fighting in a stadium would give a much better chance for his fans to see him in action, than fighting in 10.000-capacities Casinos with reservations for high-rollers, so that should be applauded as well. Hatton-fans will know what I mean on this one.

It's an awful fight, don't get me wrong I like Steve Forbes and think he's a decent lightweight but come on he lost to Grady Brewer! :-X
Re: Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
His last loss was to Demetrious Hopkins at 140, although it was a notorious decision.
Two angles to view it from:
1) Shame on Oscar for picking on a much smaller guy
2)Congrats to Forbes on what is set to be his biggest pay day.
Re: Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
......De la Hoya couldn't fight Forrest? De la Hoya couldn't fight Spinks? De la Hoya couldn't fight Ouma? De la Hoya couldn't fight Margarito? Alcine? Joel Julio?
This fight is PATHETIC
Re: Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
I actually place the blame on Oscar. I cannot bring myself to blame Forbes for going in search of a huge pay day like this.
De la Hoya, is actually abusing his power as promoter already, how can he justify this?
Re: Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
Apparently since it's a "tune up fight" he figures he can fight anyone he pleases ......what about frickin vernon Forrest, he's no big time fighter anymore he sheisted Quartey out of a win and he just isn't all that good anymore HOWEVER he did beat Shane Mosley TWICE and that counts for something!
Oscar needs to fight fights that intrest the public and not ones that bore them to tears!

You mean I just wasted my money on a "Oscar-Forbes....Mega-Fight" T-shirt for nothing?
:'(

Damn he is really taking a chance now. I guess his proposed match with Brian Sutherland fell through.

This topic should be merged. I wish I had the power.
Re: Oscar to fight Steve Forbes on May 3rd - part of 'Free HBO weekend'
DeLaHypa should fight a swinging sack of steel ball bearings instead. This is a "production" event, with respect to Forbes.
Was Phillip Holiday busy?

Now I'm not saying this is going to be a competitive fight, but Lyle, use your fucking head. What on earth do you mean, why not Vernon Forrest?? He's looking for a TUNE UP fight, before he cashes in again fighting Mayweather. Vernon Forrest wouldn't sell any more tickets than him fighting Steve Forbes(in fact if anything less). And, Forrest would have a GREAT chance to beat Oscar. I'm talking a complete pick-em fight at this point in their careers. Now why the fuk would Oscar want to take that fight? It's like I always say. You can't blame Oscar for taking a guarenteed win for the same amount of money that he'd get to fight someone who could very well beat his ass. It's just a no brainer as far as that fighter is concered. The problem lies with the fact that he COULD make as much fighting Forbes, or Paulie, as he would Forrest or a real threat. But to blame the fighters themselves is retarded, I've always said this and always will. The reason the UFC has put boxing to shame in terms of matchmaking is a) the fact that it is marketed WAY better, and the undercards of big events actually have good fights that turn casual viewers on to new fighters... and b) Dana White owns every fighter, they are all under the same promoter. Therefore he has nothing to lose pitting top prospects/ stars against each other. Now combine all this with the fact that 99% of people who will watch Oscar fight( and generally would) don't know who Forbes or Forrest are, it make for an identical matchup from a promotional standpoint. All they have to do is hype up Forbes and his contender run, as well as the Dhop robbery, and people think it's a good competitive fight. You've got to remember that a vast majority of people who watch Oscar fight have no clue about his opponent, and to an extent it's always been that way.

CC. You summed that up nicely.
