resume writing advice needed
OK need a quick spot of advice
I am writing up my resume for a job.
It's taking waaaay too long to answer the specific required criteria but I'm almost finished.
So I have an old resume also that I need to update to put in with my answers to the job criteria but in the skills section I've listed a lot of stuff I had to write about answering the criteria anyway so not sure if I should bother with that?
Also have a section about career goals in my resume but I'm not sure listing those is going to help me get this job because I'm going for a basic lab technician job which I'll be overqualified for once I've finished my PhD (in theory - if I ever do). If I say I might not care about finishing my PhD it looks like I'm not ambitious and might be lazy. If I say I want to go on to be a research scientist it looks like I'll quit really quickly and would be unlikely to even continue working in their organization.
So would it be weird to leave it out completely and say nothing about career goals?
I'm sure there are plenty of people who are awesome at resume writing who might be nice enough to give me a little advice just quickly? You being an intelligent lot so I can check back here in the morning (late here now) and finish this stupid application tomorrow.
Please wonderful people :)

Heya Sharla :),
What may be best for you to say is "I wish to get as much hands on expierience as I can in this field, as it has always interested me and I feel I can advance in this profession. I feel this job would be beneficial to me in advancing my knowledge of the field and perhaps aiding me in later pursuing a PhD."
Something like that.
Re: resume writing advice needed
You are awesome thanks Hitmandonny! double CC for you - one now and another one later coz that's such genius :)
Re: resume writing advice needed
It was no hassle Sharla, CC Returned, good luck with it, you'll get it no problem!
Re: resume writing advice needed
Thanks hitmandonny! :) I've sent it off and now just have to wait - it's for a position in a forensic science laboratory and since people get all excited watching CSI shows they get a lot of applications.
In reality it's repetitive DNA testing - not anything like on TV where everyone's an expert on everything but I know people who work there and I think I'd like it.
There are a lot of sporty people there for some reason, people run at lunch and cycle there, always ask about your training etc etc - a little different to the atmosphere where I am now where having anything other than work in your life sometimes seems shunned.
Re: resume writing advice needed
I understand you completely!
I went running one lunch time and when I came in afterward people were looking at me like I was mentally unwell!
It's seems like a cool job Sharla, it's a great feeling to get a job after college where you really know what you're doing, it makes your college time seem worthwhile!
Re: resume writing advice needed
thanks hitmandonny
I guess it's just a completely different lifestyle and I guess I don't understand people who are happy not having some sort of extracurricular activity either. There are people in our building who seriously take pride in having nothing else like it's some sort of extreme initiation or something.
I just want to work to live not live to work!
Re: resume writing advice needed
Hey Hitmandoony - I owe you some rep :)
I got a phone call yesterday morning from them saying I should apply for the higher level position!
They have a lot of applications to go through and I'm still not guaranteed anything but I guess they must've liked what they read :)
All these positions are only one year contracts but they're ideal because it gives me time to finish up my PhD, save a little money and accrue a little more experience before I have to go elsewhere.
Very Happy :)
Re: resume writing advice needed
Thats great Sharla, It's great when things start to work out isn't it!!!
When do you intend to start work?

It's not over yet - they've just encouraged me to apply for the higher level position - they haven't given it to me yet. There'll be at least 2 interviews before they choose someone so I have to get reading to revise everything they might be tempted to ask me!
If I get it I'll start as soon as they'll have me - it'll be exciting to be in a more positive, constructive work place - here people can get so nit picky.
Example - the head CEO's wife is in charge of managing a building with growth rooms in it - however, because she can get away with being as irrational as she like because of who she married to she thinks she's in charge of everything - when my knee was bad I was taking the elevator in stead of the stairs and I got an email from her blaming me for global warming - when I don't drive and her and her hubby own multiple vehicles!
Re: resume writing advice needed
No matter where you go Sharla you'll meet people like that:rolleyes:
It's people like that who really get to me too!
(Just read the Bar thread in the other room.)
It's difficult to actually implement this advice, but in theory we are the better people, the ones who worked to get where we are and the ones who have actually worked to acquire knowledge, skills and expierience throughout our lives, we may be dictated to by more wealthy infleuential people, but without us they're nothing....You think they could operate a lab themselves? Or in my case create a Bill of Quantities by themselves? Hell no!!!
But anyway, I really hope you get this and that it work's out well.
If there's any justice in the world you should get it. Nice things should happen to nice people.
Re: resume writing advice needed
Thanks hitmandonny :)
I hope I get it too but now I've got some encouragement with how things have gone this one so far I think if i don't I'll just keep applying and something will come along. All I need is something to tide me over until I finish my PhD - it doesn't have to be really well paid or high level.
I think in this woman's case she punishes herself - everyone hates her because of the way she acts with people so she just isolates herself. I actually think she needs some sort of mental health therapy. If she didn't PO me so much I'd feel some sympathy for her.
Re: resume writing advice needed
Yeah, I know the way, I know people like that too!
But as you said at the ned of the day, she's punishing herself.
I think it's great that your pursuing your phd, it takes dedication because it takes that bit longer, but I Rreckon it's really admirable to pursue knowledge in your chosen field to that extent.
I'll get my higher degree after next years college work and I'm debating what I'll do after that. I've become interested in journalism and have been doing a bit of boxing journalism on the side, but I also think that I may consider doing some law distance learning. But then I want to go pro so I might leave the learning till then and work a bit first.
Re: resume writing advice needed
Law and journalism. Interesting. So you could be suited to a lot of communication type jobs with paperwork and red tape that might be tricky for others. Maybe one day you should get into the boxing promoting business?
You'd know the sport well and manage people fairly - promote it as a sport that could be targeted to everyone. Here I think some people have a negative stereotype in mind of what a boxer is and what boxing can do for people.
I'm not sure it's the same way over there but I think it's an unfortunate public image which could be gradually changed by the right people maybe. :)
I'm not sure how different the role of the boxing promoter is for shows there compared to here so I'm not sure if I'm on track saying that or not?
Re: resume writing advice needed
Boxing promotion is floroushing here and the promoter is essentially the manager here, so I would be interested and I can see myself getting into it.
As for Law and Journalism, I just have a good head for words and English so thats where that originates.
I think over the next month I'm going to sit myself down and make a list of my aimss and goals. I'm then going to go for them as hard as I possibly can.
I think your dead right about boxing's imager. I always thought how It would be a good idea if you first got the community interested by having them participate. It would be easy to sell top level competition then.
