Why was Floyd Mayweather ranked 2nd Pound for Pound in 99
I was looking at the ring's pound for pound rankings from the 90s till now and I just can't figure it out.
He was 8th in 98 and he was 7th in 2000
His first signature win did not happend till 2001 over Corrales. So what gives here.
And before some of you go "Who cares, it was 9 years ago." Well I have my reasons and we'll get to that after I see your thoughts.

Well I can't remember that far back but I'm guessing that the majority of the guys above him lost fights hence dropping them down.
I'm guessing Jones Jr was number 1.
I'm suprised he went back down the rankings though, once a fighter climbs to the top they are normally there until they lose ???

In 98 it was
DLH
Jones Jr
Holyfield
Trinidad
Johnson
Mosley
Lopez
Mayweather Jr
Hamed
Tapia
The only guy on that list that lost a fight in 99 was DLH

What I don't understand is why him in particular when in 99 all he did was beat three guys who I have not heard of. I'll admit I was not a huge follower of the sport at the time and Superfeather was not exactly my favorite division. But I was wondering what that was all about.
Re: Why was Floyd Mayweather ranked 2nd Pound for Pound in 99
Jones should be number one. He had more talent that Oscar but not the competition.
Re: Why was Floyd Mayweather ranked 2nd Pound for Pound in 99
Because people can recognize Talent when they see it? Regardless of the competition they've faced.

Well in that case I'm making Amir Khan number one
Re: Why was Floyd Mayweather ranked 2nd Pound for Pound in 99
I looked at the fights of some of the boxers in the list in 1999:
Floyd: Carlos Gerena (34-2-0), Justin Juuko (33-2-1), Carlos Ramon (44-2-1), Angel Manfredy (25-2-1)
RJJ: Reggie Johnson (39-5-1), Richard Frazier (18-3-1)
Tito: ODL (31-0-0), Hugo Pineda (36-1-1), Pernell Whitaker (40-2-1)
ODL: Tito (35-0-0), Oba Carr (48-2-1), Ike Quartey (34-0-1)
Mosley: Wilfredo Rivera (30-3-1), John Brown (19-5-0), Golden Johnson (15-2-2)
Ricardo "Finito" Lopez: Will Grisby (14-1-1)
Erick Morales: Junior Wayne McCulloug (23-2-0), Reynante Jamili (39-4-0), Juan Carlos Ramirez (17-1-0), Angel Chacon (24-2-0)
Looking at this P4P list, Floyd and Morales appears as the most active boxers in 1999. However, the names in Floyd's list show better records. Maybe something that helped Floyd was closing 1998 with a victory over Carlos Gerena. This was also similar to Morales who closed 1998 with a huge TKO victory over Junior Jones, the fight who turned me as a Morales fan.
RJJ just fought twice with opponents with no impressive records. Finito in my opinion is one of the bests but, I believe sometimes was underrated because of his low weight, just fought one time this year, 1998 was the year of his 2 battles with Alvarez. Shane had 3 victories over no impressive record opponents.
Probably we could argue why Tito and DLH appear below Floyd this year because it seems that they made bigger things than Floyd in 1999.

Weren't both Lewis-Holyfield bouts in '99? Because if so, then Holyfield lost a fight in '99, he would've been 0-1-1 that year.
Re: Why was Floyd Mayweather ranked 2nd Pound for Pound in 99
I thought it was roy oscar one and two at that time not oscar floyd...floyd was never second til roy lost to tarver, it gave bhop the p4p title as number p4p fighter then move floyd up to second place. thats the only time when floyd was number two til he moved up to one when bhop lost to j.t. floyd didn't really have the toughest oppenents for him, but roy and bhop losing gave him the top spot.

Yeah because Amir Khan is going to be as good as Mayweather ::** , he definitely is talented, but not like Mayweather.
