I can miss a big fight on Saturday night with the intentions of downloading the fight the next day or watching it for free the next saturday and not have to worry about hearing the results before i see the fight. The only exception would be 1. if Hopkins fights because i live in Philly. 2. I get on a boxing website. other than that i have no worries.
matter of fact even when hopkins fights the local media still act like it's not important.
this is really sad
You're right, it doesn't get much coverage, but I was surprised out of my mind yesterday I was watching a college game on espn and the commentator brought up taylors and pavliks fight, that was refreshing.
We've got no heavyweights. If there were one or two good heavyweights it would help boxing a lot.
Good point.Not to sound like a fossil but imagine what It was like without the internet and the mass of Sites and easy access Today.I remember when there was a big fight and not being able to see it at all . I gave up on The networks for post fight coverage a long time ago.....There to busy showing The world series of poker .
I think In a way The availability and International Media at our finger tips right now has resulted in them stepping up,the General Sports media/Regular media has had to play catch up.Then again How long has It been since one of the big Three networks has shown a live weekend Boxing show.
Like You said also do not rely on the Local news either,They have Priorities In sports ....Farking Jr.Highschool Football results and The winner of the Monthly Horseshoe tournament...No s!!! :rolleyes:

and if a don't know what round the fight ended and i'm watching it and its round 4 and it has only streamed just under one 3rd of the stream then i can guess it will end in point and usually to the boxer that won the first 4 rounds....
i hate downloads and it is killinig the sport but they will never replace the live events.....
but Sopcasts now that could kill the sport ;)
I fail to see why it would be considered a "bad" thing by anyone that boxing is not nearly as much of a topic for todays media...
To be honest, I like the state of boxing in the U.S. today..You can keep all the things that come with a sport being "popular"... As soon as the major corporations and major media outlets pick up on something it gets cheapened every time...
Arenas start getting packed with executives entertaining clients, ticket prices go through the roof, the media gets even more biased and chooses who will be a star (look at what they've done to baseball with their Red Sox - Yankees obsession) and the hardcore boxing fans get pushed further and further away from the sport...
Nah, I have the internet, I can find out any info I need on a boxer.. Screw major media and let them stick to licking Eli Mannings bum..
I like the feeling I have now of the sport. It's like knowing a secret no one else knows. And I'd like to keep it as hush hush as I can...
And TV doesn't help either. Even in the eighties when there was free national TV coverage of big fights. Because fights were on national TV for everyone to see they got commensurate coverage in other media. Big fights were a watercooler topic.
Now it's all PPV and satellite/cable. People have to pay money and this automatically removes boxing from the mass market and turns it into a niche interest. Which means almost zero mass media coverage of the buildup/participants etc. It means nobody discussing it at work and that you have to hit the "specialist" option on your remote. Which is the same option for certain kinds of films, isn't it. :)
But no heavyweight to impinge on national conciousness and no free-to-air TV coverage of the really big fights means we're a niche sport. It's a bugger but there you go.
In a few years when computer processor power/broadband connections are advanced enough to function as TV, the potential market for PPV boxing events goes from a few million homes worldwide to a few billion. Then we're eventually going to see billionaire boxers. Hopefully. Better that than billionaire UFC/similar people.
Nah its fine here in the U.S. The thing is, everyone does watch it but only a few talks about it. I always here commentators from the nfl, nba or where ever quitly and suddenly ask eachother will they watch the fight saturday or did they see the fight. Problem is now a days when we say fight it could mean mma not just boxing.
One of the most common question from men to men is, did you see the fight or will you watch the fight. Never really getting into details into what fight but its a yes or no answer. Quick and simple conversation, very common but since its so short very little people hears it. I guess other sports have more to talk about then boxing. Bottom line though, we all still watch the fights ;)

Boxing did it to itself....they priced themselves out of favor with the fans and more importantly the stations covering the events (NBC).
Look at UFC and MMA it's everywhere! Because it's good???? NOOOOO because it's CHEAP!!!!
UFC PPV's are cheap as hell when compared to boxing...sure the shmucks fighting in the UFC don't get paid as well as let's say De la Hoya, RJJ, Pacquiao, and Mayweather Jr. but they give the fans what they want for what they are willing to pay.
I don't mind SOME fights being PPV but when Shannon Briggs-Ray Mercer is a PPV fight in 2005 then something is mega wrong. Also the highlights of these fights can't be shown often or at all in most cases.
