Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
In the aftermath of Pavlik Taylor 2 I had almost forgotten one thing from the undercard that bothered me.
Montiel's victory over Castillo was heralded one of the most dominant displays of modern times, by the Top Rank commentators. Now, I cannot disrespect anyone for beating Martin Castillo, but I feel that is a stretch.
Castillo was a tenacious fighter and anyone defeating him is doing alright, but it was stressed before the fight that he was 31 years of age. I felt that the Castillo that stepped in to fight Montiel was a mere shadow of his former self. To me he looked like a war ship that had simply run out of ammo and was attempting to out manouevere a younger fully loaded battle cruiser.
In short, I feel that Martin Castillo is shot and Montiel was getting a bit too much credit.
Re: Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
Donny I understand what your saying BUT you wouldn't have known that until after the fight.
For example if you look back before the Hatton-Castillo I myself posted the following:
"Castillo is a shot fighter and merely 1/8 of what he once was as a Lightweight anyone who thinks this fight will be competative is delusional"
I don't think ANYONE in boxing period thought the same about Martin PRIOR to the fight. Sure he wasn't 25 anymore but he was still fighting and wining leading up to this fight. The calibre of opposition was weak but wining is the key thing here.
Some fighters turn old over night and I think this was the case with Martin. This doesn't take anything away from Montiel and I agree with the comment about it being one of the most dominant performances.
If you can direct me to any site, link or page that predicted a TKO win for Montiel or a dominant win for Montiel then I'll agree with you. I think for the most part people thought it'd be competative the whole way through.
The difference between your aguement and the comment made by Top Ranks commentators is that your saying it after the fact. Now unless you made those comments about Martin prior to the fight then you are unique and you have every reason to disagree.

100% agree. And since I don't remember Donny making any comment of the sorts he should keep quite.

Very very true....some even figured he'd loose before the fight. Always better to beat a shot fighter than loose to one. He did his job so reguardless he deserves a pat on the back.
Re: Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
Your on your own here hitmandonny, you cannot criticise a flawless performance. Just cannot.
Re: Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
By no means am I taking away from Montiel, it WAS a good victory.
But can you justify it being compared to Hopkins Tarver or Calzaghe Lacy?
I agree Mick, Retrospect is a great crutch to a critic, but the thing is I like Montiel!!!
Re: Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
Either way Castillo was rated #1 by Ring mag going into the fight! When you beat one of the the top guys in the division so dominantly its difficult not to give appreciation.
Like others have said; it was thought of as a top match-up going in. I for one was picking Castillo to use better skills to win a UD.
Fact is no one has owned Castillo like that & IMO there were no signs it would be so one sided.
Re: Displeasure at Fernando Montiel.
Well, I deserve to be smacked. I Picked Castillo To win over 12 just as Galaxy.I was convinced that If Montiel sold out the defense and went all out for the KO,Catillio would manuever and box him....I was as wrong as a guy can be. After that first knockdown the fight was as good as over.
Montiel as of late is not the same Montiel of old that looked uninspired Vs. Gonzalez and at other times hot and cold. He deserves buu-koo respect for a very descisive Victory and doing what you are supposed to do to a Very good fighter who may or may not be what he once was,
In any case...pre or post fight...Hindsight Is 20/20

I agree with your general point (and also, I think the thread title is a bit wrong - the displeasure surely cannot be with Montiel, at best with the commentators lauding him), but I do think this is a slightly wrong assesment.
I for one had Montiel the favorite going in, and if you look at the prediction board you will see most people there thought the same. Quite many people had it down as TKO as well - hell, even The Boss himself (Saddo) predicted a Montiel TKO5-win. Does Saddoboxing.com count as a site?
