New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
:OhNo:Good afternoon uk boxing fans!Would anyone like to discuss about the New Heavyweight Knockout Tournament? It's a Heavyweight division contest where eight heavyweight boxers battle it out with each other to the Prizefighter Series. It consists of three rounds of three minutes per round on each bout and it all takes part on the same night. It's taking place at the famous York Hall in London on the friday 11April and it's live on Sky.Its Promoted by Barry Hearn. It could revolutinise the Heavyweight division which i do agree needs to be revamped.I think it could be a good idea!Anyone have a view out there on this subject??I'd like to hear from you.THANKS!
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Yeah this is a great idea good luck to Barry for puting this together I will be going.for to long we have had to put up with the same old faces mauling around it's about time someone showcased the rest of the talent out there . For a moment it looked like David Haye was to be britains next heavy hope but with him being tied up with Macca I can't see him fighting at heavyweight until about november & even then he wont be interested in the domestic scene. Now is the time for some big fella about 210lb to step up & make his mark there is big money out there if your good enough with the right conections. The best of luck to whoever wins this tournament
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
:britain:Yeah it should cast a shining light on the domestic scene at the Heavyweight division. It'll be a foot in the door for any talented prospect for whoever wins.Their'll all be decent fighters in the Tournament and british bred with good pedigree which is great! One of which is DAVID DOLAN a unbeaten boxer from Hartlepool(northeast)which i'll be rooting for. It's about time the boxing scene in the heavyweight division had some really good long term prospect boardcasted on the scene.
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
The confirmed boxers -
Billy Bessey (Portsmouth) - 7-4-0
Paul Butlin (Melton Mowbray) - 11-4-0
David Dolan (Sunderland) - 7-0-0
Dave Ferguson (North Shields) - 4-0-0
Alex Ibbs (Stoke) - 3-0-0
Colin Kenna (Southampton) - 16-6-2
Ian Millarvie (Hamilton) - 7-0-0
8th boxer to be confirmed
Looks like Martin Rogan (Belfast) - 7-0-0 is no longer part of thge line-up. Pity.
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
:bow:Nice one ROB for listing the eight heavyweight boxers who are taking part in the new HEAVYWEIGHT K.O TOURNAMENT. I think it'll be a really good boardcast of the up and coming Heavyweights in the U.K.The division could do with having some good future prospect and i hope this new tournament can highlight what talent we have in the country.Speaking of which..i like the way the ex WEST HARTLEPOOL ruby player DAVID DOLAN has adopted his talent in the noble sport. He's still unbeaten.I hope i wins the tournament,as i'am from the same town that he's stable in(HARTLEPOOL).CHEERS MATE!
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
I'm all for showcasing new talent - especially heavweights - especially british - especially from the North East because i'm from there too !!!!
The only thing that would put me off is that it sounds like the guys will have more than one fight a night ?
If so it's a shame because you could have the most talented fighter there who gets a cut or some kind of freak injury in his first fight that puts him out of the competition.
On the whole though great to see this kind of spot light placed on new talent. Hopefully it will not only uncover asome new talenetd fighters but also encourage some new fans.
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Now then U.K boxing fan. It's great to hear that fans are welcoming the new K.O tournament which starts on the 11 of April at the one and only top quality venue that is YORK HALL in London.Im really looking forward to what the u.k have on offer in the heavyweight division.Having each of the opponents to anticipate in more than one bout throughout the tournament should'nt be a problem as to each of the bouts only have duration of three 3minute rounds.Good to hear your a fan from the north east. Will you be rooting for David Dolan to win?
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Not surprising coming from Hearn.. is surprising we still don't have "Premier League Boxing" though
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Well hopefully this new Heavyweight K.O Tournament would cast a light on the Premier League. You never know it could be a start of a new era in the division. It's a start at least!Someone has to bring a new fresh hope in the ranks of the division.Weather there is a Tournament similar already out there in europe i dont know?if not then it could and should generate interest over in there as well.
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Wasn't this idea first pitched in Oz and endorsed by Lennox Lewis? It was called Superfighter then.
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
I dont know mate!If thats right then i cant understand his method of trying to establish it over Austrailia. No wonder the heavyweight divison in the U.K is so corrupt and has been for so long.Mind you i'll give Lewis credit for the idea, but why was'nt he interested over here in the uk?Their cant of been any good prospects, but then why the hell did he try over oz instead?Thats not the right place to try and adopt a tournament like that especially in the Heavyweight division,i mean who the hell is their out there(Austrailia)who is worth boardcasting?.....NO one i suspect!!

I believe Lennox Endorsed the idea rather than thought of it.
The idea was to bring back focus to the Heavyweight division by placing short fights close together in an eliminator tournament, with rounds scored on aggression (so no snooze fests)

Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
Alright they mate.I still give credit for Lewis on promoting the tournament, well after all who else could the oz's rely on in promoting a tournament like that over there?!A nice lump some of £££s to be had for the winner.A toal of approx of 2.7million pounds,WOW thats big money and it's not even a world title bout!!Their were't shy on giving the money away where their? And i wonder who eventually won the tournatment,i bet thats all their won as well considering the lack of pedigree from over there.BIG THANKS for the article you sent from the BOXING NEWS MAG.Most appreciated mate! The U.K will make a better match up from the previous one for sure. Thanks!;)

No hassle, the tournament never took place however, which was a pity. I believ it had something to do with television licensing or something
Re: New Heavyweight K.o Tournament
It's a shame it never got fully got off the floor. It sounded like good future prospect.I guess it never got off due to licence rights or some kind of goverment boardcasting law or just a simple matter of not enough ££££s involved, never mind.Lets hope that the U.K version has better foundation, which im 100% certain it will have.Im really looking forward to the event.Look out for David Dolan in the tournament. He has got a unbeaten record and is doing great at the moment as pro after he left being a rugby player for his local team WEST HARTLEPOOL.He could win it out right.:)
