Amateur's affecting Boxing detrimentally.

While at an amateur tournament during the weekend I pondered the effect of the amateur computer scoring on boxing.

As any informed boxing fan will already know, the computer system rewards only cleanly landed punches, disregarding any other style or technique and removes the emphasis on power and stoppages.

My question was this; Does the amateur game nowadays, actually hinder a fighters progression into the pro ranks?

The system encourages the fighter to reduce his volume of punches in favour of fewer more accurate punches. It also makes elaborate defnces and movement worthless. It encourages the use of punches with little power and liberal use of the solitary jab...

That's a real good point never crossed my mind.The actual scoring system for amatuer i think works very well but regarding effecting the pro-game I havn't really noticed.

I was cornering during the weekend as well as boxing myself, but whilst in the corner for one kid I was shocked to find he was behind on the computer at the end of the second (they show you the scores before the third and final round~) He had completely out boxed his opponent, but was hitting predominantly to the body and as a result din't score with the judges....

;) Interesting question hitmandonny, this produce to amateur fighter to obtain and create a discipline for be more effectual throwing his punches and prepare them for be a good pro ranks in the future. :cool:

Hey Macho, I do respect the fact that a fighter who competes in the Amateur ranks will have a better punching technoique, but will the scoring system encourage the fighter to throw less/or even tons more less perfect punches?

I must admit I'm not really familiar with the amatuer scene but hasn't it pretty much always been this way though?

I've always thought that the amatuer game rewards technical ability and accuracy but ignores other facets of professional boxing, i.e the real physical qualities needed to win, power, stamina, conditioning, heart etc.

It's probably a great test of a boxers skill but is not really relavent to real professional boxing, kind of like how a snooker player may be a world trick shot champion but not a decent pro tournament player because he lacks a complete all around game.

An arguement that has two sides (Like most but)....I have been on the side where I have argued about the way amateurs do not credit volume and style...only clean punches...I have also been all for it....

IMO it should be done in stages....

Novice should only count the clean effective punches...Only to avoid guys going in there and throwing everything but the kitchen sink and we avoid a tough man type performance where a guy just goes and throws until he is exausted in hopes of a big shot landing.....

I have been against it once a fighter is past novice because the experience changes a fighters style....Plus it is not really that effective in sparring just to concentrate on clean landing shots...you have to concentrate on footwork defense etc and as the fighter spars with more of a variety of other fighters his style will naturally change intop what is effective for him....that is not always going to be the way amateurs score fights....

I have had fighters of mine that have pretty much beat the tar out of the other guy but lost because the other guy stayed in a shell for 4 rounds and hardly threw anything.......

So in that aspect there needs to be an adjustment according to how many fights the guy has and what to look for......Ring generalship should be factored in the scoring IMO but what are you going to do...Coaches need to get together and approach the powers that be in Colorado.....

To have things changed on a world level would tak quite a bit more then that

No, computer points scoring has been introduced in the last ten years.
Before that pen scoring was used in which rounds were judged on Effective aggression, Style, Defense and punches landed. This was more objective and if one had impartial judges a good way of scoring a fight.
This is still commonly used in local tournaments and some minor championships.

I agree, the amateurs are breeding two types of fighters;
1) The accurate counter puncher, throwing few punches but landing well.

2) The aggresive scrappy puncher, who throws volumes of less clean punches landing a small percentage of a large volume in hope that he will out score the opponent.

I guess this is why I like Puerto Rico's mentality. They train their fighters to fight as pros this way the transition is not that big of a jump when it's time to turn pro.
I honestly can't watch amatuer fights because I am used to watching pros. I watch an amatuer fight and I feel like I am in wonderland and lost like a mother freckle. Then again, I watch a proffesional heavy weight fight and I suddenly get very sleepy ;D

Well I don't enjoy watching amateur boxing If I don't know the fighters personally as I feel that they have adapted the sport so much that it has become a different sport.

Hi my friend hitmandonny, Do you have some familia in amateur boxing? Well i do , i have a nephew that now is prospect for the olimpics , not now but maybe for the next and i want to say that i realy enjoy it watching him and other kids , the point is the way that you look at it , because when you see a kid that inspire to reach there goal that is beatyfull man....and i undertand what you saying in the thread , because i know that i amateur boxing you can see a good prospect for the future and other that go just for be part of the team......But that happens in every sports , righ?:cool:

I actually box in the amateurs myself Macho, I'm not an Olympian prospect, I've got an obvious Professional style.

I agree completely, I guess that the amateurs are necessary step for kids getting involved in the sport and as such are of vital importance. So yes, you are perfectly correct mate.

It's almost like they are two different sports altogether. I think amateurs are great for building the boxing skills up, but there's so much more open area in the pros,so if you can do good boxing at amateur your bound to be better with more to work with. As far as power, stamina, chin, heart those things are needed in the pro's moreso so you may not be working on those areas where you can improve them.
