Re: how to teach a youngster how to drive?
Is he driving a stick shift or automatic?
Let him watch you drive first. Explain him the basic stuff first like road safety and traffic regulations. I'm assuming he already have drivers permit?

yea he has to get drivers permit first ;D
Re: how to teach a youngster how to drive?
Something that might be helpful, my older sister taught me to drive when I was 12, she would either take me to a large cemetary during the day, or a large housing development late at night, and she would let me drive there, because there would be the least amount of traffic or pedestrians to worry about hitting. So you may want to try the large cemetary to start practicing in, it was a perfect place to go, because you have to go slow, and there usually aren't any hard turns or anything. It might be less nerve racking for him, and you.

hehe a large cemetary is where my dad taught us how to drive. Every sunday when we visit my grandma and my brother that pass away, he'd teach us how to drive there a bit.

See, a good place to learn. ;D
Also, because that is a reminder of where you can end up, if you fuck up while driving. ;)

Drivers permit and FULL COVERED auto insurance.
My dad taught me how to drive the famous 4-speed jeepney ;D when I was 14. We were just cruisin' by the shore line in the beach like it was cool. That was fun.

One thing for sure,... they're not power steering. Most jeepney's guages doesn't work too. You won't be able to tell how fast you are going, and how much gas you have left in the tank.

I've been on them a few times, and they just don't seem to care how fast they are going.
Re: how to teach a youngster how to drive?
I took both of my kids to a big warehouse parking lot on a Sunday and let them drive until they got tired. I think it's better for them to learn on a stick because they will be able to drive any vehicle once they know how to drive a standard transmission.
p.s. Get ready to do the imaginary brake thing with your foot while they are driving.
