Is the cell phone and natives allowed to stay in the resorts just a tease to make token efforts of lifting the oppressive rules..
I heard cuba is such a beautiful place with great culture, be nice if they loosened up the political noose and the US lifted our restriction to enter without recourse..

I believe you shut the doors on them because they're commies, however in China where there's money the US is more than happy to trade with. Being a red seems to matter less when green is involved;D
Figured I get better response and conversation over this topic... I mean my understanding is most live in the dark ages still, how great for them to be able to have their economy stimulated as well as enjoying some of the better modern conviences
Cuba is already open - we can go there whenever we want and stay where we want and do what we want while there (within reason). We can buy any Cuban goods and sell any goods to Cuba.
Do you think they will open up America soon or........

I'll never understand how we can trade with China but not with Cuba. The only reason I can think of, which still doesn't make sense, is the proximity of Cuba to this country and the Cuban Missile Crisis which has been over for well over 40 years. Sorry, but between the two, we have much more to fear from China than Cuba. And Cuban chicks are HOT.
But we then think that Vladimir Putin is being unreasonable at not being delighted at having Ukraine and Georgia as full-fledged NATO members, with US missiles based there.Quote:

Restrictions in China are being loosened to get rich Cubans to spend money. A lot of those restrictions, like the cell phones and resorts, are for things most Cubans can't afford. If these products and services are utilized enough then they will become more affordable for everyone. What I don't understand is who was going to these resorts before?
Anyone hear about the old American woman who won't leave? She was there in the 60s, her husband and her owned this place when they told everyone to get out. They stayed and her husband died some years ago. She's in her 90s or so and her family back in the states can't get her to leave.

There was a fair bit of money in Cuba too, at the time of the blockade, Cuba accounted for 5% of all US trade and like 40% of Florida exports were going to Cuba so it was pretty substantial.
My dad smokes cigars and he is obsessed with this topic as Cuban cigars will go down in price after this. He searches every day, spends as much time reading articles about the blockade as I do on here. Obama has been open about relaxing the Cuban laws and thinks that letting U.S. dollars into Cuba will work against the Castro regime, as it would make the citizens of Cuba less dependant on the Government.
I hope they do it, Cuba has some really good athletes. There was a fascinating article in Sports Illustrated shortly after Castro resigned about the sports in Cuba. Castro was a huge sports fan and knew he couldn't compete with capitalism when it came to guns and ammo, so he did it through his sports and it was through sports that he championed his beliefs. Castro never had a statue built of himself but always had posters printed out of him in a baseball uniform or him in boxing gloves, his favorite player ever was Joe DiMaggio I believe. I'll try to find the article, excellent read.
