My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
Before the Margie fight I was high on Clottey and actually picked him to upset the "feared" Mexican. Of course, that did not happen and Clottey went on to conquer but fail to KO a whithered and beaten Corrales. Since then Clottey has looked like garbage in my opinion.
No way in hell he deserves a shot at Cotto. He'll re-break both his hands trying to block Cotto's body shots.

Have to agree he has not looked stellar.Had Shamone alvarez on the verge and just mailed it in down the stretch two fights ago.I would like to see him in the mix but He looked pedestrian tonight as well.Love his arsenal of body punches but he just looked like he was biding his time..........too much of that these days.He has the physical tools.....stamina may be a problem at times.....but I think he is inconsistent.
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
I agree he's inconsistent but is still a tough ask for anyone at & around the weight!
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
Never rated him at all anyway. The only reason he got so elevated a repuation after his quit job against Margarito is because the hate for Margarito is so strong people wanted to make out that Clottey was robbed of a certain victory had it not been for his hands

On that point I don't agree.
I think Clottey at his best is one of the better fighters in the division, whatever division he chooses. He's got issues with stamina, a bad jab and he waits to much but he's got a good Wright style defense and on the inside he is a force. And he's got some good wins over Gutierrez, Alvarez and he was robbed against Baldomir. Compare his record with another second tier guy like Kermit Cintron and it doesn't look so bad.
Haven't seen him tonight but seems more of the bad things in his fighting showed again.

I like Clottey . He dictate the pace, constant pressure , can take a good punch no problems, He just drains his opponent both mentally and physically. I like the hands up style , the way he roll with body punches much like Ike Quartey.. Always a pleasure to watch Joshua perform. Cotto would have his hand full trust me.
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
I don't think Cotto would have much of a problem with Clottey. I like Clottey, I like how he holds his arms but I really don't like how he matches up.
For one, Clottey is a pressure fighter who does his best work close range. Fighting inside with Cotto is never a good idea and I really doubt he has the ability to move Cotto backwards. He doesn't have an outside game. He has a lazy jab and is mostly squared up from the outside, Cotto could walk him down easily. Clottey is a big guy for 147 but he doesn't use his height and size the way a guy like Paul Williams whom I think would be a much tougher test for Cotto.
Secondly, there is just no way Joshua Clottey keeps up with the pace of Miguel Cotto. Clottey faded against Gutierrez, Margarito, Alvarez and was losing the later rounds in the fight he got robbed in, against Baldomir. Cotto just would not let him off the hook and all the time Clottey spends moving forward, waiting would be time that Cotto would punish him with punches and while Clottey has a good defense, he tends to change up later in the fights and hold his hands lower to slip punches rather then block.
That's a bad style matchup for Clottey, I couldn't imagine him beating Cotto. Judah, Mosley, Margarito, Williams, Quintana and Cintron are all fights that I would give Clottey a chance.
Mayweather would outmove him and take advantage of his lack of outside game and Cotto would simply overwhelm Clottey when Clottey wouldn't want to be overwhelmed.

Good post you make some great points.
If the match was made today, I'd pick Clottey to beat Cotto by KO some time mid to late rounds. something about Joshua catching Cotto on the sweet spot seems probable ?
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
It's very hard for me to pick Clottey over Cotto right now. I'm sure he'd have success at times but Cotto would be able to take over from the mid rounds onwards. I feel Clottey has some stamina issues & with Cotto's pressure it could only spell bad news!
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
COme on now. Clottey would not beat Cotto. Even a die hard Ghanian, which Clottey is, can admit that.
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
Used to love Clottey myself but I feel the same way....
PS- Pretty gay title to the thread... I thought I was gonna burst through the door of this thread and catch you red handed with a sock and some vasoline;D

Clottey still stopped an opponent that had never been KO'd before, something Mosley couldn't do! I to believe he struggles with Cotto but I think your being a little harsh on his performance!
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
I think CLottey is a good tough fighter, the key word being good, not great. Decent power, good handspeed, tough but on the other side, gasses, wiiiiide open to the body and can be outworked. A solid top 10 guy.Cotto would crush him and his ribs imo.
Re: My Lovelight For Clottey Grows Dim
I've always liked Clottey, but truth be told he is starting to read like yesterday's news. It seems he is lacking any real fire and is content to fight only as hard as he needs to win, without going the extra mile. He seems to be lacking in the finishing department and just goes with the flow. Good solid fighter and tough as steel, but becoming a bore. Cotto would break him.
