Joe Cortez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At the hatton-floyd fight, I gave him a pass. I avoided the thought of how awful he is as a ref in that fight.
When they announce he was going to be the ref for joe-bhop, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. he suck in the floyd-hatton, I thought he'd do better and not make himself a big factor since he already made a lot of fans pissed by how he refs.
Now its getting rediculous, I don't ever want to see him in a big fight. EVER!!!!!!!!

Cortez was a disgrace.
In the Hatton fight he decided to prevent Ricky from clinching and working close.
Yet he allows Hopkins to grab maim and foul Calzaghe for the entire fight.

Cortez ruined the fight by letting Hopkins hold all night .
He didnt know how to react either when Hopkins decided he needed a break and went down .

Cortez was a disgrace, but at least the judges were fair. Hopkins was allowed to foul for twelve rounds and given a couple of rests and he still couldn't win.

Absolutely what I was seeing. When the fight started I told my girl: "you watch Cortez let Hop do exactly what he wouldn't let Hatton do".
I was amazed Cortez didn't take points from Calazaghe for the "low blows". He should have been taking points from Hop for holding and more than a handful of times hitting on the break.
Either way, a messy fight, and no one looks good fighting ole' Hopkins. What a nightmare that must be.

Cortez last night seemed to always get it wrong. He'd let Bernard hold all the time, and then the few times when they came together when it looked like it would be an exchange and they could punch it out, he'd step in super quick and break them.

In Cortez's defense refereeing this fight was ALWAYS going to be a nightmare for any referee and considering the amount of flak Cortez got for not allowing Hatton to hold against Floyd you would expect him to be consciously wary of breaking up the action so much this time.

Cortez was alright last night IMO, though it did prove how wrong he was against Hatton.

I thought this may be the case too, we were angry when he wouldn't let Hatton grab and brawl on the inside. So this time he let that kind of fight happen, just conveniently it was for the home fighter yet again. :rolleyes:
Cortez has some unreasonable bias agianst us Brits, I think he posts on here under the name Violent Demise. ;)

Most Refs have an agenda to please the Promoter make no mistake. But Cortez takes the piss :rolleyes: the Bounder.

I don't get all this hatred of Cortez. He was breaking up the clinches quickly, ensuring that Hopkins couldn't eat up more time in the clinches. (And when was the last time you saw a ref impose his will on Hopkins, making him fight like he's supposed to... punching more and lunging and clinching less.)
Hopkins milked a questionable low blow. But who is the ref to say that a punch that did land in the cup area does not warrant a 5-minute rest, which is granted by the rules? And the second time... yes, Cortez took a few seconds to sort it out. But he did command Hopkins to continue fighting.
Bottom line: Hopkins has been fighting this style of fight during his entire lengthy career. Why trash the ref now because the fight was closer than Calzaghe fans would've liked?
Could this have more to do with Calzaghe's inability to finish off Hopkins that with the ref? Just asking.

I couldn't agree more. Cortez looked very indecisive lastnite, and this has always been the case with him
