Reigning UBO bantamweight champion Nick Otieno is set to leave Kenya and vows to destroy Gorres for the upcoming boxing event, dubbed “One More Time,” at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino next weekend.


“I am making my first trip to Cebu to pick up a vital victory. We Kenyans are known for running in athletics, but I am coming there to make someone run from my punches. That man is Gorres,” Otieno was quoted as saying by Kenyan correspondent Edward Sande.

Nick Otieno was recently nicknamed “AK 47” in Kenya for his rapid punches and “Black Sugar” by Russian fans for his impressive fight against Eduardo Garcia for the IBF international bantamweight title in February.

Otieno explained that he had been waiting for a chance to breakthrough the African boxing and into the international arena. And winning over Gorres in a fair and legitimate contest would showcase to the world what he brings to the table.

“I have my sights on a title. I missed out on the IBF bantamweight in Russia, and because I stopped Gorres’ original oppoent for the cancelled IBF title, Gorres can expect to get the same treatment from me that African Boxing Union champion Francis Miyeyusho got on Apr 15th,” Otieno said. His performance in Russia garnered him accolades both from the Russians and the Kenyans.

Boxing in Kenya is fueled by corporate and military establishments. The Army, the Police, and the Prisons gather the best boxers in the land in their bid to fill their offices with medals. So that as early as 15 years old, the military recruits new talents with a promise of assured employment. By the age 30, the contract stops.

Otieno is a bit of a “late bloomer,” wrote Sande. He turned pro at an unusually advanced age of 31 during which many professional boxers already opted to retire. His professional record shows a warrior who can stand the heat of a full-rounded game. Interestingly, beginning last year, his punching power improved as he cloked in more TKOs in a year’s time. It seems that life begins at 31 for Nick Otieno.

Meanwhile, reigning IBF intercontinental superfly boss Z “The Dream” Gorres has not issued a reply on Otieno’s latest challenge. But ALA Boxing chief trainer Edito Villamor said that Gorres is patiently building his arsenal to ensure that he will not embarrass Cebuanos come May 31.

The 2007 loss to WBO superfly defending champion Fernando Montiel and the controversial draw decision in February in his fight with Vic “The Bull” Darchinyan put a concerned question in the minds of Filipinos on Gorres’ ability to make it to a world champion title convincingly.

In August last year, Gorres dropped Eric Ortiz in 8th round, his 15th KO work in his professional career. His experience gives him an edge over and a good change to take down Otieno. But Otieno may have faced hardier warriors that Gorres may have not have even faced yet in his entire career. And that’s where the excitement is? Could Gorres sustain a round-to-round punchworks against Otieno? Who goes down first? Who kneels to their knees? That’s worth waiting for in a week’s time.

“I now know that if I do not knock my opponents out cold,” Otieno assured boxing fans around the world who will see the fight, “in those instances, I had better deliver a one-sided beat down, leaving no room for the score cards to doubt who fought well.”

CEBU CITY -- World title contender Z 'The Dream' Gorres and his Kenyan opponent Nick Otieno, made weight during today's weigh-in at the ALA Gym in Banilad for their super flyweight battle tomorrow night at the Waterfront Hotel here. Gorres came in at 116 lbs. while Otieno tipped the scales at 112 lbs.


In the main undercard, comebacking former world champion Malcolm Tuñacao of Cebu weighed in at 120 lbs while his oppenent, visiting Tanzanian Rashid Ally, came in at 117 lbs.

For the WBO Asia-Pacific Youth Lightweight Title bout, Jason Pagara tipped the scales at 134 lbs. while his Indonesian opponent Heri Andriyanto came in at 131 1/4 lbs.

The above top three cards for tomorrow's event are each set for a 10-round battle.

Yes Nick Otieno is good enough for Gorres...Sande Otieno is the WBC International SB champ, and they train together,,,same managemebt company jabjab promotions and same trainer..paul otieno....if you want to see how good he might be you can find videos for Nick Otieno Vs Eduardo Garcia IBF INtercontintal title fought at Yekaterinburg in Russia on 29th Feb.... he lost that fight on close points..one judge gave a draw for the fight

I don't think the fight was stopped. I'm assuming it was just a round tenner.

I missed the fight too. But I'll post more infos in a couple of hours.

World title hope Z "The Dream" Gorres of ALA Boxing Gym cruised to a shutout unanimous decision over Kenya's Nick Otieno in the main event of Saturday's night's "One More Time" card at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.


The bout saw Gorres displaying his superb boxing skills, but the ALA fighter just could not put away the game Otieno despite numerous big shots landing on the visiting fighter.

All three judges saw the fight 100-90 in favor of Gorres, who now improves to 28 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws with 15 KO's.

With the win, Gorres solidifies his chances at facing the winner of the August 2 Dmitri Kirilov-Vic Darchinyan IBF superfly title showdown in the United States.

In the chief support, ex-WBC flyweight ruler Malcolm "Eagle Eye" Tunacao proved he's back with a first-round TKO over Kenya's Rashid Ally.

The southpaw Tunacao caught Ally with a big left to chest, after which the visiting fighter turned his back complaining of an injury. Referee Ben Necesario waved off the fight as Ally was in no condition to resume fighting.

Ringside physicians later said Ally injured his elbow after the big blow by Tunacao.

With the win, Tunacao improves to 22 wins, 2 losses, 3 draws with 15 KO's.

Sixteen-year-old phenom Jason Pagara, egged on by the presence of Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno, won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth lightweight title after Indonesian Heri Andriyanto refused to answer the bell at the start of the third round.

Pagara sent Andriyanto down in the second round, but the Indon refused to go down and exchanged shots with his younger foe.

WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo, who supervised the fight, said he was impressed by Pagara's performance, and told the fighter he would be highly rated by the WBO soon.

Jether Oliva of General Santos took a unanimous decision win over Jason Rotoni of Elorde Gym, while Jun Intor and Ali Belonquel figured in a highly-entertaining fight before ending up in a majority draw.

The night's big revelation, however, was the young Juan Miguel Elorde, grandson of the great Flash Elorde, who showed tremendous promise in a one-sided beatdown of Racem Laud. Elorde knocked down Laud in the fourth round, although the Bacolod City fighter hang on for dear life to hear the final bell.

Romeo Jakosalem stopped Elmer Colve in the fifth round, while Jerson Mancio retained his perfect record with a unanimous verdict over Ratazu Matzui.
