Why Cotto-Margarito IMO won't emulate a Corrales-JLC type fight
The more I think about this fight, and the more I watch Cotto fight guys who are tough and come forward, the more I think this fight won't resemble a thriller where both guys just stand there and bang. For one Cotto hasn't done that against lighter punchers in N'Dou and Abdullaev, why would he start with Margarito? Cotto, if anything, is a smart fighter, he knows his limitations, and he knows how to take the least amount of punishment while still being able to dish out the most. He balances these two things very well, and he has progressively gotten faster, sharper, and simply better with each step up in class. I think Mosley even after this fight will be his pinnacle achievement, and just by seeing how he handled Mosley quite well up until whatever happened I feel that Margarito has a slim to zero chance of beating Cotto, and that I could see Cotto picking him apart for 12 rounds.
Even Oscar who used to have Margarito as a sparring partner acknowledges that Cotto is probably too fast for Margarito to logically beat him.

Margo is going to treat Cotto like a little man. I see Margo Clubbing the Hell out of Cotto, wearing him down, then Cotto will try to box him in the latter rounds trying to steal a decision. Maybe i am wrong but I cant see Cotto winning this Fight.

Then you need to watch more boxing.

The only way I see Tony going down is from a perfect timed massive body shot.

I agree with you, and i have been watching boxing probably longer than some of the youngsters on here have been breathing. But i will say this...Cotto has improved quite a bit in the last few yrs and is in his prime. Margarito on the other hand...has slipped a notch to even to the playing field, but i still think he has enough to pull out the victory. Cotto will have to pitty pat and move like P.Williams did when he beat Margarito, but i don't see it happening. Cotto will use the ring and throw his quick combos but unlike Williams...he will always be in Margarito's range to get hit. Williams big advantage was his height, legs and tenticals he has for arms. Cotto has none of those attributes. Cotto has never fought anyone as big as Toney, and who puts on pressure like Tony does, and it will force Cotto to fight at a faster pace than he's used to...and wear him out . I see a late stoppage in favor of Margarito

I probably have not seen boxing for that long as you have, but I disagree with your conclusions. This will be a tough fight, and I see Cotto winning by decision. However, I agree that the higher chances of a TKO win are for Margarito. I agree, Cotto will use the ring, but I expect him also to switch and apply pressure smartly, not allowing Margarito to press at will. I believe this will be the difference that will make the balance to move in favor of Cotto. The problem with Williams is that, yes he had the reach advantange, but no, he does not have the lateral movements of Cotto. And, don't forget Cotto's power... Cotto will not be standing in front of Margarito's punches as Cintron did. I think that Cotto has to be careful with Margarito's upper...
Re: Why Cotto-Margarito IMO won't emulate a Corrales-JLC type fight
Cotto isn't that fast. I would argue that Clottey is faster than Cotto, and with better defense as well. Cotto is there to be hit all night. I don't think anyone expects this to be a constant slugfest on the inside like Castillo-Corrales, but that doesn't necessarily ensure a Cotto victory. Tony might not be as naturally gifted as Cotto, but he can box, and I think he will surprise a lot of people. At the very least, he will make this a very competitve fight.
Re: Why Cotto-Margarito IMO won't emulate a Corrales-JLC type fight
I love this fight..I'm just Amazed that this fight is being looked through...all the talk about Oscar meeting Cotto as if Margarito is just a formality .This will without a doubt be a very competitive clash of styles between two top tier well deserving fighters in the bloodline division of Boxing....Cotto is becoming a real complete package, looks to be adding boxing fundamentals every fight, great jab, head and body,a calm methodical focus and a sort of swagger has crept up...his footwork is much Improved and consequently he avoids some unnecessary exchanges when clipped..Mindset helps that as well ;D There will Imo be many points were Cotto will have to stand his ground intelligently to offset Margaritos guaranteed multitude of power punches from varing angels...Margarito is a notch below Cotto in the technical skills department but is also far from the one dimensional thick headed clubber some in the past have suggested...his rangy body shots can equal Cottos shorter body shots...His activity level will be the most constant & damaging that Cotto has faced Imo...Uses his jab as a range finder but is capable of laying it on stiff to set up brutal uppercuts, inside & outside as well as straight rights. I think the key for Cotto will be on point boxing with hard jab and inside body punching, resist the strong urge to over engage Margarito and put it in the bank round by round...but he will have to sit down with power shots and keep Tony honest.....The key for Margarito Is to keep Cotto on heels and change up his constant punches,Variables in pressure with cutting off the ring along the ropes.I love this fight,I'm picking Margarito via late round TKO stoppage on the ropes, both will be susceptible to the body.

Cotto doens't have to be outside of Margarito's range, Margarito loses so much steam by the time his punches hit the target that he doesn't get even close to as much power as some people seem to be thinking. He isn't a devastating hitter. Cotto will probably be fine under Margarito's arsenal I mean Zab has a lot of snap on his punches, and he didn't hurt Cotto really badly, and Mosley hits decently hard(see him destroy Vargas with that left hook? shot or not Vargas was it by a heavy punch, and Mosley landed heavy rights on Cotto). As for size besides height and reach I see Cotto as the bigger man, he was barely making 140, but he was weighing 160 on fight night, I can only imagine how much more he weighs now considering how much bigger he looks. Cotto is a very big WW just not in height. He is built like a Mike Tyson or TUa, and he is stocky and very powerful while guys like Margarito are tall in thin, sure he is strong, but he doens't have those stocky legs or thick core body.
Re: Why Cotto-Margarito IMO won't emulate a Corrales-JLC type fight
I think Margarito is going to hit Cotto with a lot of combo's without a doubt... Zab was able to get Cotto with some decent shots. And had he really been able to string some of those together, could have had a lot more affect on Cotto... Margarito is one of the guys out there who is prepared to take some of Cotto's shots to get his own off... And it's been shown in many of Cotto's fights that when he opens up his offence, he is there to be hit pretty easily... Taking advantage of that while your getting pounded is another thing though..
If there is anyone out there prepared to risk it all to take advantage of those moments when Cotto is open, it's Margarito...
It is easy to look at all Cotto's strengths and point at a pretty straight forward victory to him... But I personally think that is seriously overlooking all the things Margarito is good at as well... Which are easy to miss....
Re: Why Cotto-Margarito IMO won't emulate a Corrales-JLC type fight
IMO , im sure that Cotto will going to put his respect first into the ring guys , he probably will catch some Margaros punches to see if he can assimilate , like he did with Judah , then my friend we could make a good story , Cotto obviously has to worn out Margaro in the first 5-6 round for then make his next strategie to outbox some few rounds and try to get the KO or UD clearly ..................
Margaro will try to put pressure , but once that he teste Cottos power i know that he will retract a bit , some people say that Cotto never fought with opponents likes Margaros tall , that is incorrect , Cotto had face with opponents more taller than him and he (Cotto) when feel pressure is more Dangerous than any other boxers , ask to Corley , Torres and Judah in the first 6 rounds , so is better for Margaro to not underestimate Cottos power like Ponce D`Leon did with Juanma few weeks ago..........
The only way that i see Margaro doing more harder fight is if he use his reach , something that he never do , he usually like to fight at level of his opponents ...........................
Lets see what will happen guys...................
