What is the point of Joe Cortez?
I've just watched the undercard fight from Saturday night, which Cortez ref'd, and apart from the horrendously stupid ending, his performance was so different to how he handled Mayweather and Hatton.
It made me really angry. Everytime the fighter's came close together Cortez kept out of the way. The only time he broke them up was when it got ridiculous because they'd got tangled up. He allowed them to grapple for position etc...
So why did he referee the Hatton-Mayweather fight so differently? It was absolutely ridiculous. The sport is bent. What's the point of a sport where the best fighter is given every perceivable advantge?
It's almost as bad as the best F1 drivers starting at the front of the grid.
Re: What is the point of Joe Cortez?
I personally think that Cortez sometimes looks like he doesn't know what he is doing, I know he has vast experience but his performances are all over the place, sometimes he lets one thing go, then in another fight he is very strict on the same thing.
I just don't like him he tries to draw too much attention to himself and tries to get as much media attention as possible, adding to his catchphrase "I'am fair but I'm firm" the fans are not there to watch you Cortez they are there to watch the fight, I think sometimes he thinks it is the other way around.
The best referees in the world are the guys you don't even know they are in the ring, they just get on with it and do what they need to do, Smoger for example

So us boxing fans can take the piss out of him.

It's just annoying when the referee is blatantly trying to give an advantage to a fighter who doesn't even need it.
